Significant changes have been made to Chapters 6 through 8, which describe algorithms and their implementations and now include topics such as the implicit restart techniques, the Jacobi-Davidson method, and automatic multilevel substructuring.

Book Variational Methods for Eigenvalue Problems

Download or read book Variational Methods for Eigenvalue Problems written by S. H. Gould and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1966-12-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book gave a systematic exposition of the Weinstein method of calculating lower bounds of eigenvalues by means of intermediate problems. From the reviews of this edition and from subsequent shorter expositions it has become clear that the method is of considerable interest to the mathematical world; this interest has increased greatly in recent years by the success of some mathematicians in simplifying and extending the numerical applications, particularly in quantum mechanics. Until now new developments have been available only in articles scattered throughout the literature: this second edition presents them systematically in the framework of the material contained in the first edition, which is retained in somewhat modified form.

Book Sturm Liouville Problems

Download or read book Sturm Liouville Problems written by Ronald B. Guenther and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sturm-Liouville problems arise naturally in solving technical problems in engineering, physics, and more recently in biology and the social sciences. These problems lead to eigenvalue problems for ordinary and partial differential equations. Sturm-Liouville Problems: Theory and Numerical Implementation addresses, in a unified way, the key issues that must be faced in science and engineering applications when separation of variables, variational methods, or other considerations lead to Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems and boundary value problems.

Book Asymptotic methods in mechanics of solids

Download or read book Asymptotic methods in mechanics of solids written by Svetlana M. Bauer and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2015-05-30 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction of solutions of singularly perturbed systems of equations and boundary value problems that are characteristic for the mechanics of thin-walled structures are the main focus of the book. The theoretical results are supplemented by the analysis of problems and exercises. Some of the topics are rarely discussed in the textbooks, for example, the Newton polyhedron, which is a generalization of the Newton polygon for equations with two or more parameters. After introducing the important concept of the index of variation for functions special attention is devoted to eigenvalue problems containing a small parameter. The main part of the book deals with methods of asymptotic solutions of linear singularly perturbed boundary and boundary value problems without or with turning points, respectively. As examples, one-dimensional equilibrium, dynamics and stability problems for rigid bodies and solids are presented in detail. Numerous exercises and examples as well as vast references to the relevant Russian literature not well known for an English speaking reader makes this a indispensable textbook on the topic.

Book Extremum Problems for Eigenvalues of Elliptic Operators

Download or read book Extremum Problems for Eigenvalues of Elliptic Operators written by Antoine Henrot and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-08-29 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on extremal problems. For instance, it seeks a domain which minimizes or maximizes a given eigenvalue of the Laplace operator with various boundary conditions and various geometric constraints. Also considered is the case of functions of eigenvalues. The text probes similar questions for other elliptic operators, such as Schrodinger, and explores optimal composites and optimal insulation problems in terms of eigenvalues.

Book Spectral Theory of Operator Pencils Hermite Biehler Functions and their Applications

Download or read book Spectral Theory of Operator Pencils Hermite Biehler Functions and their Applications written by Manfred Möller and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theoretical part of this monograph examines the distribution of the spectrum of operator polynomials, focusing on quadratic operator polynomials with discrete spectra. The second part is devoted to applications. Standard spectral problems in Hilbert spaces are of the form A-λI for an operator A, and self-adjoint operators are of particular interest and importance, both theoretically and in terms of applications. A characteristic feature of self-adjoint operators is that their spectra are real, and many spectral problems in theoretical physics and engineering can be described by using them. However, a large class of problems, in particular vibration problems with boundary conditions depending on the spectral parameter, are represented by operator polynomials that are quadratic in the eigenvalue parameter and whose coefficients are self-adjoint operators. The spectra of such operator polynomials are in general no more real, but still exhibit certain patterns. The distribution of these spectra is the main focus of the present volume. For some classes of quadratic operator polynomials, inverse problems are also considered. The connection between the spectra of such quadratic operator polynomials and generalized Hermite-Biehler functions is discussed in detail. Many applications are thoroughly investigated, such as the Regge problem and damped vibrations of smooth strings, Stieltjes strings, beams, star graphs of strings and quantum graphs. Some chapters summarize advanced background material, which is supplemented with detailed proofs. With regard to the reader’s background knowledge, only the basic properties of operators in Hilbert spaces and well-known results from complex analysis are assumed.

Book Computer Simulation and Computer Algebra

Download or read book Computer Simulation and Computer Algebra written by Dietrich Stauffer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapter on statistical-physics simulations has been enlarged, mainly by a dis cussion of multispin coding techniques for the Ising model (bit-by-bit parallel oper ations). In the chapter about Reduce, some details of the presentation have been cor rected or clarified. The new operator MATEIGEN for the computation of eigenvec tors of matrices is explained. The first chapter and the appendix remain unchanged. Needless to say, the field of computational science is advancing so quickly, for ex ample with the development of parallel, as opposed to vectorized, algorithms, that it will not be too long before a further edition is called for. Cologne, March 1989 The authors Preface to the First Edition Computers play an increasingly important role in many of today's activities, and correspondingly physicists find employment after graduation in computer related jobs, often quite remote from their physics education. The present lectures, on the other hand, emphasize how we can use computers for the purposes of fundamental research in physics. Thus we do not deal with programs designed for newspapers, banks, or travel agencies, i.e., word processing and storage of large amounts of data.

Book Numerical Solution Of Ordinary And Partial Differential Equations The 3rd Edition

Download or read book Numerical Solution Of Ordinary And Partial Differential Equations The 3rd Edition written by Granville Sewell and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents methods for the computational solution of differential equations, both ordinary and partial, time-dependent and steady-state. Finite difference methods are introduced and analyzed in the first four chapters, and finite element methods are studied in chapter five. A very general-purpose and widely-used finite element program, PDE2D, which implements many of the methods studied in the earlier chapters, is presented and documented in Appendix A.The book contains the relevant theory and error analysis for most of the methods studied, but also emphasizes the practical aspects involved in implementing the methods. Students using this book will actually see and write programs (FORTRAN or MATLAB) for solving ordinary and partial differential equations, using both finite differences and finite elements. In addition, they will be able to solve very difficult partial differential equations using the software PDE2D, presented in Appendix A. PDE2D solves very general steady-state, time-dependent and eigenvalue PDE systems, in 1D intervals, general 2D regions, and a wide range of simple 3D regions. The Windows version of PDE2D comes free with every purchase of this book.
