Book excerpt: The Europe Union's massive efforts to rebuild after the coronavirus pandemic present a unique opportunity to transform its economy, making it more green and digital – and ultimately more competitive. Download or read book EIB Investment Report 2017 2018 written by European Investment Bank and published by European Investment Bank. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EIB Investment Report is the bank's flagship research report, aiming to deepen our understanding of investment and investment financing in the EU. It presents and analyses the 2017 release of the EIB Investment Survey (EIBIS) of businesses in the EU, which also includes a Europe-wide survey of municipal authorities. Following a theme of "From recovery to sustainable growth", it describes how the investment recovery in Europe continues to strengthen and become more broad-based, across countries, sectors and asset classes. Business investment is being driven by the improving outlook and efforts to keep pace with competitors, but there is still need to improve business environment. This investment recovery is generally supported by good financing conditions for firms, but deleveraging remains a drag. EU firms continue to be net savers overall, suggesting that many firms are unwilling to invest despite a liquid financial position. Nonetheless, with the improving economy there also emerge structural investment needs in innovation, skills, infrastructure and sustainability. The EU continues to fall behind global peers in terms of R&D spending, while other types of intangibles – software, training, organisational capital, etc. – prove to be just as important. Business environment has to improve further. Persistent financial fragmentation across the EU could slow convergence and reduce capacity to absorb shocks. This report indicates that there is a window of opportunity to address structural investment needs through both public and private investment, with targeted policy intervention to ease specific constraints.

This book was released on 2018-11-28 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Investment Report, issued annually by the European Investment Bank, provides a comprehensive overview and analysis of investment and the financing of investment in the European Union. It combines the exploration of investment trends with in-depth analysis, focusing especially on the drivers and barriers to investment activity. The report leverages on a unique set of databases and survey data, including EIBIS, an annual survey of 12 500 firms in Europe, which focuses on their assessment of investment and investment finance conditions, and which allows analysis with firm balance sheet information. The report provides critical inputs to policy debates on the need for public action on investment, and on the types of intervention that can have the greatest impact. This year's report addresses a moment of economic recovery in which investment growth, overall, is strong, but downside risks to the economic outlook are rising. It identifies many ways in which current investment is still structurally inadequate, given the legacy effects of the recent crisis and the great challenges that lie ahead. There is an urgent need to re-tool Europe, from its infrastructure and innovation ecosystem, through to its businesses and workers, to enhance prosperity and social cohesion.

Download or read book EIB Working Papers 2018 06 Resource Misallocation in European Firms written by European Investment Bank and published by European Investment Bank. This book was released on 2018-11-22 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using EIBIS, this paper shows that the dispersion of marginal products across firms in the European Union is about twice as large as that in the United States and estimate potential increases in GDP from the removal of barriers between industries and countries. It examines the role of firm characteristics and emphasizes that some firm characteristics may reflect compensating differentials rather than constraints and the effect of constraints on the dispersion of marginal products may hence be smaller than has been assumed in the literature. It also shows that cross-country differences in the dispersion of marginal products are more due to differences in how the business, institutional and policy environment translates firm characteristics into outcomes than to the differences in firm characteristics per se.

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Smart Technologies written by Heinz D. Kurz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-27 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook provides a thorough discussion of the most recent wave of technological (and organisational) innovations, frequently called “smart” and based on the digitisation of information. The acronym stands for "Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology". This new wave is one in a row of waves that have shaken up and transformed the economy, society and culture since the first Industrial Revolution and have left a huge impact on how we live, think, communicate and work: they have deeply affected the socioeconomic metabolism from within and humankind’s footprint on our planet. The Handbook analyses the origins of the current wave, its roots in earlier ones and its path-dependent nature; its current forms and actual manifestations; its multifarious impact on economy and society; and it puts forward some guesstimates regarding the probable directions of its further development. In short, the Handbook studies the past, the present and the future of smart technologies and digitalisation. This cutting-edge reference will appeal to a broad audience, including but not limited to, researchers from various disciplines with a focus on technological innovation and their impact on the socioeconomic system; students across different fields but especially from economics, social sciences and law studying questions related to radical technological change and its consequences, as well as professionals around the globe interested in the debate of smart technologies and socioeconomic transformation, from a multi- and interdisciplinary perspective.

Download or read book What drives firms investment in climate action written by European Investment Bank and published by European Investment Bank. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High energy prices in Europe and uncertainty caused by the Ukraine war are testing EU firms' ability to invest in climate change measures. Europe urgently needs to embrace the transition to green energy, and firms will be called upon to play a pivotal role. By investing in climate adaptation and mitigation measures, especially energy efficiency, firms will be able to protect themselves against extreme climate events, reduce energy costs and take the actions needed to reduce carbon emissions to net-zero by 2050. The report What drives firms' investment in climate action? Evidence from 2022-2023 EIB Investment Survey uses data collected from firms to provide insight on how businesses are responding to the energy crisis and the fast-changing business environment. Some important takeaways: 82% of EU firms say energy costs are an obstacle to investment. 42% of firms in Western and Northern Europe are investing in energy efficiency, compared with only 37% of firms in Southern Europe. 57% of EU firms are concerned about the physical risks posed by climate change.
