From the legacy set in motion by Aahmes-Nefertari that gave birth to the 18th Dynasty, the tenacity, daring and innovations of Hatshepsut, the influence and representational equality of Queen Tiy to the cards dealt Cleopatra, and so much more in-between, makes this work a welcome addition to any library dealing with the ancient Egyptians. All this notwithstanding, the author, a prolific writer, considers The Majesty of Egyptian Gods and Temples one of the best books he has written having transmitted much of the thoughts of the ancients in poetry and prose expression. In addition, photographs and plans help create visuals of the characters and reinforce the literary messages contained therein. This new genre of poetry combines religious beliefs and practice, philosophical and theological expressions, historical portraiture and recounting art and architectural descriptions that allow the reader to go beyond the ordinary to gain a deeper understanding of ancient Egyptian metaphysics, religion, art, theology and culture.

AHMED SHAWQI (1869 - 1932) was the great Arabic Poet-Laureate; an Egyptian poet and dramatist who pioneered the modern Egyptian literary movement, most notably introducing the genre of poetic epics to the Arabic literary tradition. In 1927 he was crowned by his peers the 'Prince of Poets' in recognition of his considerable contributions to the literary field. Shawqi's work can be categorized into three main periods during his career: The first coincides with the period during which he occupied a position at the court of the Khedive (Viceroy), consisting of eulogies to the Khedive: praising him or supporting his policy. The second comprised the period of his exile in Spain. During this period his feeling of nostalgia and sense of alienation directed his poetic talent to patriotic poems on Egypt as well as the Arab world. The third stage occurred after his return from exile: during that period he became preoccupied with the history of Ancient Egypt and Islam. He wrote his famous Sufi poem, in praise of the Prophet Muhammad (here fully translated in qasida form). The maturation of his poetic style was reflected in his plays (including his Majnun-Layla). But inside of the poet's room the Sphinx no longer remains a little piece of stone but, right in front of his eyes, becomes a real-life Sphinx - the age-old female demon of death, who besieged the city of Thebes as a punishment for the king of Thebes who introduced homosexual love into Greek culture and thus incured Hera's hatred. The Sphinx, one of Oscar Wilde's most enchanting poems, is woven out of a net of various mythological beliefs and religious ideas. Wilde invokes a hotch-potch of varying creatures, who convey a magical atmosphere of ancient grandeur. In order to understand the poem one has to get to know the concepts that stand behind the various mythical creatures, gods and heroes. Therefore I will explain to which mythologies Wilde relates to and how they refer to each other. In this connection the time of Oscar Wilde has to be taken into consideration, too: Victorianism, with its crumbling of old values and conquering of new worlds; the period of decadence; the period of aestheticism. I would like to show some of the multitude of possible accesses, e.g. the identification of the Sphinx with the figure of the femme fatale; the personification of the Sphinx as the temptations and desires of the poet respectively The Sphinx as a metaphor for the loss of Christian faith in Victorian culture.
