The gods Ptah, Ra, Amon-Ra as well as Hatshepsut, Deir el Bahari, Karnak, Ramesseum and Medinet Habu receive more extensive praise because of the significant roles they played in religious expression, architectural development, military and imperial adventures, and influences of cultural expression, technological developments and economic pursuits. From the legacy set in motion by Aahmes-Nefertari that gave birth to the 18th Dynasty, the tenacity, daring and innovations of Hatshepsut, the influence and representational equality of Queen Tiy to the cards dealt Cleopatra, and so much more in-between, makes this work a welcome addition to any library dealing with the ancient Egyptians. All this notwithstanding, the author, a prolific writer, considers The Majesty of Egyptian Gods and Temples one of the best books he has written having transmitted much of the thoughts of the ancients in poetry and prose expression. In addition, photographs and plans help create visuals of the characters and reinforce the literary messages contained therein. This new genre of poetry combines religious beliefs and practice, philosophical and theological expressions, historical portraiture and recounting art and architectural descriptions that allow the reader to go beyond the ordinary to gain a deeper understanding of ancient Egyptian metaphysics, religion, art, theology and culture.

Book excerpt: Hatshepsut's Temple at Deir el Bahari is about a wonderful experiment in ancient Egyptian art and architecture, a uniquely remarkable structure, but more important it provides some insights about the men and a woman who were avant guard in their thinking at a time when females dared not rule. However, given the opportunity to do so, Queen Hatshepsut ruled well and was involved in many building projects, chief of which was her mortuary temple at Deir el Bahari, on the west bank at Thebes. The present work is a survey of the history of the Queen, her architect Senmut and their impact on the historical landscape of ancient Egypt. This work consists of two poems to the god Amon Ra and to the Temple of Deir el Bahari itself, an overview, an introduction, two essays on Hatshepsut and Senmut and conclusions by the author, as well as some published reports written more than a hundred years ago when the Swiss Egyptologist Edouard Naville excavated the temple. In addition, there are some 20 illustrations and photographs taken from the bird's eye view of the temple from the mountain, descending the mountain, and the ascent into the temple's colonnades, ramps, shrines, and to the middle and upper terrace at the mountain's base. The photographs are designed to "let the monuments teach" and as such, they highlight the art and architectural wonder of the temple and this work is therefore a guidebook for students, specialists, and laymen and women as well as for tourists.

More particularly, and just as the both tomb and temple have undergone changes, features observed over a century ago and may have disappeared with the influx of throngs of people who go there these days. Much more important, however, this work seeks to identify (some of the) places where the name of Rameses III has been preserved , whether in his temple and tomb, on civic structures, in museums and private collections, wherever, to reflect on how significant a ruler this, the last of the emperors of Egypt really was. Even more, the book seeks to put the temple in a historical context that also praises the excavators who rescued this magnificent piece of divinely inspired architecture, from a time when ancient man believed in the attributes and actions of a divine being, whom they made every effort to please because their destiny in the afterlife depended on how well, while on earth, they treated their fellow man and the gods, and how they stood before their god. Photographs, many in color, and Illustration provide the graphic view of important features of the temple that would familiarize the visitor and help in facilitating the functions of a Guide Book.
