Book Nonlinear Structures the Maxwell Mohr Work Theorem and the Displacement Method

Download or read book Nonlinear Structures the Maxwell Mohr Work Theorem and the Displacement Method written by Bengt Å Åkesson and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author had a desire to contribute to the advancement of a general theory for the analysis of statically loaded elastic structures with all kinds of nonlinearities permitted. The theory should set out from the conception of a structure as an assemblage of a finite number of finite members inter-connected in a finite number of loaded joints. Particularly, the author wished to suggest, develop, explain and term some new concepts in order to facilitate discussion and classification of nonlinear structure analysis, to introduce a compact notation to express nonlinear relations between matrices, to find a necessary and sufficient condition for the validity of Maxwell's and Mohr's work theorem, to clarify the relation between Maxwell's and Mohr's work theorem and the duality (contragredience, cotransference) of the natural transformations, to formulate displacement method solutions for nonlinear structures, to examine the consequences of representing the member load by statically dependent components instead of statically independent components, to review, discuss and classify current methods for the analysis of non-linear structures, to inquire into the possibility of using matrices with variable elements in nonlinear structure analysis, and to peruse and list existing literature on nonlinear structure analysis. After deliberation, the author has decided to omit figures. Figures could illustrate only a few concrete cases, and they might spoil the reader's imagination of the general situation in structure analysis. Needed verification is probably best obtained through examples devised by the reader himself.

Book Control and Nonlinear Dynamics on Energy Conversion Systems

Download or read book Control and Nonlinear Dynamics on Energy Conversion Systems written by Herbert Ho-Ching Iu and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ever-increasing need for higher efficiency, smaller size, and lower cost make the analysis, understanding, and design of energy conversion systems extremely important, interesting, and even imperative. One of the most neglected features in the study of such systems is the effect of the inherent nonlinearities on the stability of the system. Due to these nonlinearities, these devices may exhibit undesirable and complex dynamics, which are the focus of many researchers. Even though a lot of research has taken place in this area during the last 20 years, it is still an active research topic for mainstream power engineers. This research has demonstrated that these systems can become unstable with a direct result in increased losses, extra subharmonics, and even uncontrollability/unobservability. The detailed study of these systems can help in the design of smaller, lighter, and less expensive converters that are particularly important in emerging areas of research like electric vehicles, smart grids, renewable energy sources, and others. The aim of this Special Issue is to cover control and nonlinear aspects of instabilities in different energy conversion systems: theoretical, analysis modelling, and practical solutions for such emerging applications. In this Special Issue, we present novel research works in different areas of the control and nonlinear dynamics of energy conversion systems.

Book Stresses in Load bearing Walls During Construction

Download or read book Stresses in Load bearing Walls During Construction written by Gunnar Kärrholm and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The calculation of stresses and deformations in a load-bearing wall is usually performed under the assumption that all loads are applied after the structure has been completed. In reality this is not the case. The dominating loads in a block of flats e.g. are caused by the self-weight of the building which increases during construction. Statically determinate structures are built up in such a way that a given external force can correspond to only one distribution of internal forces irrespective of the force-deflection properties of the system. On the other hand, in statically indeterminate structures equilibrium exists for several combinations of interior forces under the same exterior load. Generally, multi-storey buildings with interconnected load-bearing walls are statically indeterminate structures and therefore the load distribution is statically possible in many ways. The state of equilibrium appearing in a given situation will depend upon flexibilities of the structure. These in turn are influenced by the method and order of erection during construction. Thus the effect of the self-weight of load-carrying units can not be described by analysing the behaviour of the completed structure. In the following the interest is concentrated upon structural systems with load-bearing cross-walls connected to self-supporting exterior walls. The basic conditions for the stresses and deformations in the walls are formulated in such a way that the successive loads during construction may be considered. Only effects of the weight and shrinkage of the structural elements are taken into account. The analysis is performed according to an approximate method. The application of the technique is demonstrated with examples, and the results are compared with those obtained by using other methods.

Book Direct Gear Design

Download or read book Direct Gear Design written by Alexander L. Kapelevich and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-03-22 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last several decades, gearing development has focused on improvements in materials, manufacturing technology and tooling, thermal treatment, and coatings and lubricants. In contrast, gear design methods have remained frozen in time, as the vast majority of gears are designed with standard tooth proportions. This over-standardization significantly limits the potential performance of custom gear drives, especially in demanding aerospace or automotive applications. Direct Gear Design introduces an alternate gear design approach to maximize gear drive performance in custom gear applications. Developed by the author, the Direct Gear Design® method has been successfully implemented in a wide variety of custom gear transmissions over the past 30 years. The results are maximized gear drive performance, increased transmission load capacity and efficiency, and reduced size and weight. This book explains the method clearly, making it easy to apply to actual gear design. Describes the origin and theoretical foundations of the Direct Gear Design approach as well as some of its applications—and its limits Details the optimization techniques and the specifics of Direct Gear Design Discusses how this approach can be used with asymmetric gears to further improve performance Describes tolerance selection, manufacturing technologies, and measurement methods of custom gears Compares Direct Gear Design with traditional gear design from both an analytical and an experimental perspective Illustrates the applicability and benefits of this gear design approach with implementation examples Written by an engineer for engineers, this book presents a unique alternative to traditional gear design. It inspires readers to explore ways of improving gear transmission performance in custom gear applications, from higher transmission load capacity, efficiency, and reliability to lower size, weight, and cost.

Book Light and Heavy Vehicle Technology

Download or read book Light and Heavy Vehicle Technology written by M.J. Nunney and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light and Heavy Vehicle Technology, Second Edition deals with the theory and practice of vehicle maintenance, procedure, and diagnosis of vehicle trouble, including technological advances such as four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, and anti-lock brakes. The book reviews the reciprocating piston petrol engine, the diesel engine, the combustion chambers, and the different means of combustion processes. To counter friction, heat and wear, lubrication to the different moving parts is important. To counter excessive heat which can cause breakdown of lubricating oil films and materials such as gaskets, O-rings, the engine is designed with a cooling system that uses air, water, or engine coolants. Petrol engines use the carburation or injection type of fuel delivery; diesel engines use a high pressure system of fuel injection owing to the higher pressures existing in the diesel combustion chamber. The text explains the operation of the other parts of the vehicle including the ignition and starter system, emission controls, layshaft gearboxes, drive lines, and suspension systems. Heavy vehicles need highly efficient air brakes to stop them compared to the hydraulic brake systems used in smaller and lighter vehicles. The book is suitable for mechanical engineers, engine designers, students, and instructors in mechanical and automotive engineering.
