Download or read book Trilogy Of Numbers And Arithmetic Book 1 History Of Numbers And Arithmetic An Information Perspective written by Mark Burgin and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-04-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is the first in the trilogy which will bring you to the fascinating world of numbers and operations with them. Numbers provide information about myriads of things. Together with operations, numbers constitute arithmetic forming in basic intellectual instruments of theoretical and practical activity of people and offering powerful tools for representation, acquisition, transmission, processing, storage, and management of information about the world. The history of numbers and arithmetic is the topic of a variety of books and at the same time, it is extensively presented in many books on the history of mathematics. However, all of them, at best, bring the reader to the end of the 19th century without including the developments in these areas in the 20th century and later. Besides, such books consider and describe only the most popular classes of numbers, such as whole numbers or real numbers. At the same time, a diversity of new classes of numbers and arithmetic were introduced in the 20th century. This book looks into the chronicle of numbers and arithmetic from ancient times all the way to 21st century. It also includes the developments in these areas in the 20th century and later. A unique aspect of this book is its information orientation of the exposition of the history of numbers and arithmetic.
Download or read book Iconic Arithmetic Volume I written by william bricken and published by Unary Press. This book was released on 2019-04-10 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arithmetic evolves. Iconic arithmetic is built from icons that look and feel like what they mean, rather than from strings of symbols that must be memorized. The book explores the formal structure of two types of postsymbolic boundary arithmetic. Ensemble arithmetic modernizes tallies to provide forms that add together by being placed together and multiply by being placed inside one another. James algebra defines the concepts and operations of arithmetic as different ways of arranging containers. Three simple axioms are sufficient. Features of iconic arithmetic include (1) a void with no representation and no properties instead of the symbol zero; (2) void-equivalent forms that can be freely deleted; (3) meaning based on existence of structure rather than truth or numerical value; (4) only one relation (containment) to represent all forms; and (5) construction and deletion to implement all transformations. Iconic forms and transformations can be represented as two and three dimensional structures that can be directly viewed, manipulated, and even inhabited. Many different spatial interactive dialects are described. The author explores this new kind of arithmetic from the perspectives of historical evolution, formal mathematics, computer science and mathematics education. The overall objective is to provide proof of principle that our current universal approach to the arithmetic of numbers is a design choice rather than a truth embedded in numbers themselves. Iconic Arithmetic recognizes that knowledge is embodied, multidimensional, sensual, simple. It helps us to transition into a postsymbolic world of interactive information.

Download or read book Finite Precision Number Systems and Arithmetic written by Peter Kornerup and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental arithmetic operations support virtually all of the engineering, scientific, and financial computations required for practical applications, from cryptography, to financial planning, to rocket science. This comprehensive reference provides researchers with the thorough understanding of number representations that is a necessary foundation for designing efficient arithmetic algorithms. Using the elementary foundations of radix number systems as a basis for arithmetic, the authors develop and compare alternative algorithms for the fundamental operations of addition, multiplication, division, and square root with precisely defined roundings. Various finite precision number systems are investigated, with the focus on comparative analysis of practically efficient algorithms for closed arithmetic operations over these systems. Each chapter begins with an introduction to its contents and ends with bibliographic notes and an extensive bibliography. The book may also be used for graduate teaching: problems and exercises are scattered throughout the text and a solutions manual is available for instructors.

Download or read book Connecting Arithmetic to Algebra written by Susan Jo Russell and published by Heinemann Educational Books. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To truly engage in mathematics is to become curious and intrigued about regularities and patterns, then describe and explain them. A focus on the behavior of the operations allows students starting in the familiar territory of number and computation to progress to true engagement in the discipline of mathematics." -Susan Jo Russell, Deborah Schifter, and Virginia Bastable Algebra readiness: it's a topic of concern that seems to pervade every school district. How can we better prepare elementary students for algebra? More importantly, how can we help all children, not just those who excel in math, become ready for later instruction? The answer lies not in additional content, but in developing a way of thinking about the mathematics that underlies both arithmetic and algebra. Connecting Arithmetic to Algebra invites readers to learn about a crucial component of algebraic thinking: investigating the behavior of the operations. Nationally-known math educators Susan Jo Russell, Deborah Schifter, and Virginia Bastable and a group of collaborating teachers describe how elementary teachers can shape their instruction so that students learn to: *notice and describe consistencies across problems *articulate generalizations about the behavior of the operations *develop mathematical arguments based on representations to explain why such generalizations are or are not true. Through such work, students become familiar with properties and general rules that underlie computational strategies-including those that form the basis of strategies used in algebra-strengthening their understanding of grade-level content and at the same time preparing them for future studies. Each chapter is illustrated by lively episodes drawn from the classrooms of collaborating teachers in a wide range of settings. These provide examples of posing problems, engaging students in productive discussion, using representations to develop mathematical arguments, and supporting both students with a wide range of learning profiles. Staff Developers: Available online, the Course Facilitator's Guide provides math leaders with tools and resources for implementing a Connecting Arithmetic to Algebra workshop or preservice course.
