Book Agronomics of Cotton Grown on a 38 cm Row Spacing in North Carolina

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract HAMM, GARY STEPHEN. Agronomics of Cotton Grown on a 38-cm Row Spacing in North Carolina (Under the direction of Dr. Keith Edmisten). Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) planted in a 38-cm row configuration is an innovative idea that has come about in the past few years. There has been some interest in narrow-row cotton due to the availability of a new harvester capable of harvesting cotton on 38-cm rows. Producers have raised questions regarding changing their cotton production strategies in order to maximize yield potential for cotton grown on 38-cm rows. Agronomic practices that allow for maximum yield potential have yet to be determined for narrow-row cotton. Four separate field experiments were conducted in 2005, 2006 and 2007 at Upper Coastal Plains Research Station, near Rocky Mount, NC, Central Crops Research Station, Clayton, NC, and Duplin County, NC in order to define these agronomic practices. Cotton was planted on 38-cm row spacings using a vacuum planter. One experiment was conducted to observe the effects of seven nitrogen rates ranging from 0-196 kg N ha-1 on yield potential, plant uptake of nitrogen, growth habits, fiber quality, and economic returns of narrow-row cotton. The second experiment was conducted to look at the effects of fourteen different application methods on plant height control, yield, and fiber quality. The strategies consisted of making applications to narrow-row cotton at certain growth stages with different rates of mepiquat pentaborate. The third experiment consisted of making a herbicidal defoliation application to narrow-cotton at six different percent open boll stages ranging from 0-100 % open bolls to determine yield and fiber quality parameters. The fourth experiment was conducted to determine if narrow-row cotton could be planted in a double crop situation with wheat which is an uncommon practice in NC. For this experiment, narrow-row cotton was planted in comparison with wide-row cotton for yield and economic potential a.

Download or read book Physiology of Cotton written by James McD. Stewart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-04 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cotton production today is not to be undertaken frivolously if one expects to profit by its production. If cotton production is to be sustainable and produced profitably, it is essential to be knowledgeable about the growth and development of the cotton plant and in the adaptation of cultivars to the region as well as the technology available. In addition, those individuals involved in growing cotton should be familiar with the use of management aids to know the most profitable time to irrigate, apply plant growth regulators, herbicides, foliar fertilizers, insecticides, defoliants, etc. The chapters in this book were assembled to provide those dealing with the production of cotton with the basic knowledge of the physiology of the plant required to manage the cotton crop in a profitable manner.

Book Impact of Row Spacing planting Pattern and Seed Size on Plant Development and Yield on Cotton Gossypium Hirsutum L

Download or read book Impact of Row Spacing planting Pattern and Seed Size on Plant Development and Yield on Cotton Gossypium Hirsutum L written by Steven Dale Hall and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is renewed interest in cotton performance grown using various row spacings and plantings patterns in the Midsouth. Cotton seed size has been reduced compared to sixty years ago. Planting smaller seeds is concerning due to having less energy for emergence as well as complicating the ginning process. Two row spacings, two planting patterns, and two cotton varieties were evaluated over eight site years from 2019-2020. The solid planting pattern produced a higher yield on a land area basis. In addition, two varieties, each with three seed counts, were planted at three seeding rates and evaluated over six site years from 2019-2020. Greater seedcotton yields were observed from larger seed sizes and higher seeding rates. Row spacing had no impact on yield but depending on input cost, a 2x1 skip pattern could be beneficial. Also, higher seeding rates and larger seeds maximized yields.

Book excerpt: Provides a comprehensive overview of the role of cotton in the economy and cotton production around the world This book offers a complete look at the world’s largest fiber crop: cotton. It examines its effect on the global economy—its uses and products, harvesting and processing, as well as the major challenges and their solutions, recent trends, and modern technologies involved in worldwide production of cotton. Cotton Production presents recent developments achieved by major cotton producing regions around the world, including China, India, USA, Pakistan, Turkey and Europe, South America, Central Asia, and Australia. In addition to origin and history, it discusses the recent advances in management practices, as well as the agronomic challenges and the solutions in the major cotton producing areas of the world. Keeping a focus on global context, the book provides sufficient details regarding the management of cotton crops. These details are not limited to the choice of cultivar, soil management, fertilizer and water management, pest control, cotton harvesting, and processing. The first book to cover all aspects of cotton production in a global context Details the role of cotton in the economy, the uses and products of cotton, and its harvesting and processing Discusses the current state of cotton management practices and issues within and around the world’s cotton producing areas Provides insight into the ways to improve cotton productivity in order to keep pace with the growing needs of an increasing population Cotton Production is an essential book for students taking courses in agronomy and cropping systems as well as a reference for agricultural advisors, extension specialists, and professionals throughout the industry.
