Book Effects of Water on Epoxy Resin Systems

Download or read book Effects of Water on Epoxy Resin Systems written by Tony B. Husbands and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of continuous immersion in water on the tensile strength, tensile elongation, tensile modulus, flexural strength, flexural strain, and bond strength of five different epoxy-resin systems was evaluated. The water absorption of the five systems was also obtained. One of the systems will meet Federal requirements for epoxy resins and another contains the same system but includes sand as a filler. All of the physical properties of these two systems were deleteriously affected by storage in water and, therefore, the systems should not be used when the cured systems will be subjected to immersion in water for periods longer than 1 month. In addition, every effort must be made to protect these two systems from undue exposure to water. The test results also indicate that the use of a modifier in proper amounts will produce a large increase in strength and elongation and a large decrease in tensile modulus and water absorption. Two of the modifiers tested, polymide and amidopolyamine, produced epoxy-resins systems which were not deleteriously affected by immersion. The testing errors determined in this investigation are given as a guide for testing the engineering properties of epoxy-resin formulations. (Author).

The handbook is highly application-oriented and thus serves as a valuable, authoritative reference guide for researchers, engineers, and technologists working on epoxy blends, but also for graduate and postgraduate students, polymer chemists, and faculties at universities and colleges. The handbook is divided into three parts and organized by the types of blends and components: Part I covers epoxy rubber blends, Part II focuses on epoxy thermoplastic blends, and Part III examines epoxy block-copolymer blends. Each part starts with an introduction, and the individual chapters provide readers with comprehensive information on the synthesis and processing, analysis and characterization, properties and applications of the different epoxy blends. All parts conclude with a critical evaluation of the applications, weighing their advantages and drawbacks. Leading international experts from corporate and academic research institutions and universities discuss the correlations of different epoxy blend properties with their macro-, micro- and nanostructures. This handbook thus offers a rich resource for newcomers to the field, and a major reference work for experienced researchers, the first of its kind available on the market. As epoxies find extremely broad applications, e.g. in oil & gas, in the chemical industry, building and construction industry, automotive, aviation and aerospace, boat building and marine applications, in adhesives and coatings, and many more, this handbook addresses researchers and practitioners from all these fields.

Book Effect of Time Temperature Path of Cure on the Water Absorption of High T Sub G Epoxy Resins

Download or read book Effect of Time Temperature Path of Cure on the Water Absorption of High T Sub G Epoxy Resins written by M. T. Aronhime and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of different time-temperature paths of cure on the water absorption of high t sub g epoxy resins has been investigated. The resins were cured isothermally at elevated temperatures for different times, with the following results: as extent of cure increased, the glass transition temperature (t sub g) increased, the room temperature (RT) modulus decreased, the RT density decreased. the RT diffusion coefficient appeared to decrease, and RT equilibrium absorption of water increased. The decrease in RT density is related to an increase in volume, which controls the amount of water absorbed. A qualitative model accounts for the increase in RT volume with increasing cure. The model is based on a restricted decrease of free volume on cure due to rigid molecular segments in the cured resin systems. A thermodynamic approach, independent of the absorption mocel, can correlate sorption data at different temperatures. The diglycidyl resin was also cured for extended times at three temperatures in an effort to achieve full cure at each temperature. Their equilibrium water absorption increased with increasing cure temperature, consistent with the decrease in RT density. The systems studies were a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A cured with an aromatic tetrafunctional diamine, trimethylene glycol di-p-aminobenzoate (T sub g infinity = 156 C), and a triglycidyl ether of tris(hydroxyphenyl)methane cured with the same amine (T sub g infinity = 268 C).

As demonstrated throughout the response to COVID-19, the process of research and development of novel vaccines can be significantly optimized when stakeholders are provided with the resources and technologies needed to support their response. Vaccine Research and Development to Advance Pandemic and Seasonal Influenza Preparedness and Response focuses on how to leverage the knowledge gained from the COVID-19 pandemic to optimize vaccine research and development (R&D) to support the prevention and control of seasonal and pandemic influenza. The committee's findings address four dimensions of vaccine R&D: (1) basic and translational science, (2) clinical science, (3) manufacturing science, and (4) regulatory science.

Book Evaluation of Epoxy Resin Systems as Backing Materials for Miter Gates

Download or read book Evaluation of Epoxy Resin Systems as Backing Materials for Miter Gates written by Dennis L. Bean and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conducted because of problems encountered with epoxy resin backing material when used as a filler for setting quoin and miter blocks of lock miter gates. The problems were failure of the epoxy system to set and softening after being submerged in water over a period of time. Laboratory tests were developed to evaluate different epoxy resins when used as a filler for setting quoin and miter blocks of lock miter gates. The epoxy resins were tested for effect of curing temperature and thickness on compressibility; effect of curing time on strength; water absorption; effect of moisture on surface hardness; effect of temperature on strength; effect of freezing and thawing on shelf life; flowability in narrow spaces; and compression under water. Five epoxy resins were tested for the parameters originally requested by the Mobile District. Five more systems were tested for compressive strength, water absorption, and the resistance to softening under water as later requested by the Mobile District. Based on the test results, two systems were found to be the most promising.

Book Chemistry and Technology of Cyanate Ester Resins

Download or read book Chemistry and Technology of Cyanate Ester Resins written by I. Hamerton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After epoxy resins and polyimides, cyanate esters arguably form the most well-developed group of high-temperature, thermosetting polymers. They possess a number of desirable performance characteristics which make them of increasing technological importance, where their somewhat higher costs are acceptable. The principal end uses for cyanate esters are as matrix resins for printed wiring board laminates and structural composites. For the electronics markets, the low dielectric loss characteristics, dimen sional stability at molten solder temperatures and excellent adhesion to conductor metals at temperatures up to 250°C, are desirable. In their use in aerospace composites, unmodified cyanate esters offer twice the frac ture toughness of multifunctional epoxies, while achieving a service tem perature intermediate between epoxy and bis-maleimide capabilities. Applications in radome construction and aircraft with reduced radar signatures utilize the unusually low capacitance properties of cyanate esters and associated low dissipation factors. While a number of commercial cyanate ester monomers and prepoly mers are now available, to date there has been no comprehensive review of the chemistry and recent technological applications of this versatile family of resins. The aims of the present text are to present these in a com pact, readable form. The work is primarily aimed at materials scientists and polymer technologists involved in research and development in the chemical, electronics, aerospace and adhesives industries. It is hoped that advanced undergraduates and postgraduates in polymer chemistry and technology, and materials science/technology will find it a useful introduc tion and source of reference in the course of their studies.
