Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effects of Variations in Gin and Mill Cleaning on the Lint and Yarn Quality of Mechanically Picked and Stripped Cottons Another factor that can affect the amount of trash in cotton is whether it is picked before or after frost. Cotton picked after frost contains more trash as a result of the plant becoming brittle and thus less able to withstand the mechanical action of the picker. This study was designed to determine the ef feets of several combinations of gin and mill cleaning conditions on lint and yarn quality. In preliminary tests two lots of seed cotton were ginned without being subjected to drying or cleaning equipment. One lot was picked be fore frost, and the other lot was picked after frost. The resulting lint was considered to have excellent uniformity and to have fewer neps than lint that had been processed through the normal cleaners and driers. In addition, the trash was of large particle size, and such parti cles do not present as many removal problems at the mill as do fine particles. Cocke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Influence of Gin and Lint Cleaner Combinations and Mill Cleaning on Dust Levels and Yarn Quality of Acala Cotton Dust levels appear to be influenced by the trash content in lint, increasing as the trash content increases. Cultural, harvesting, and ginning practices and varietal characteristics affect trash levels and, therefore, dust levels to varying degrees. The dust level in cotton can be reduced significantly by using lint cleaners at the gin.2 The competitive position of cotton could be enhanced by determining the optimum combination of gin conditioning and cleaning machinery for processing cotton harvested by different methods and containing different quantities of moisture and trash in order 'to obtain a bale with a minimum amount of dust. Lowered dust potential in the bale would helpthe textile mill maintain dust levels within osha standards. However, gin-processing sys tems designed to reduce dust levels must not seriously affect fiber and yarn quality. Other wise, the benefits of reduced dust levels will be offset bya reduction in yarn quality and Spin ning performance. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of gin and lint cleaner combinations and mill-cleaning levels on card-room dust levels and on fiber and yarn quality of Acala cotton. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Multiple Lint Cleaning at Cotton Gins: Effects on Bale Value, Fiber Properties, and Spinning Performance Nevertheless, as the practice of lint cleaning, and particularly multiple lint cleaning, became more common, growers, ginners, manufacturers, and others have expressed serious doubts about its effects on the quality of cotton and about the economic soundness of it. Growers and ginners have raised questions about the effects of lint cleaning on returns to growers and on ginning costs. Manufacturers have expressed doubts about the effects of lint cleaning on the fiber properties of cotton, on the spinning performance of cleaned cotton, and on the quality of yarns made from such cotton. Claims have been made that lint cleaning so seriously damages cotton fibers that it increases manufacturing costs, reduces the quality of textile products, and reduces the competitive position of cotton in relation to other fibers. Because of the serious nature of these questions in terms of the long-run interest of all segments of the cotton and textile industry, the U. S. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drying and Cleaning Cotton at the Gin: Effect on Fiber Properties and Spinning Performance, San Joaquin Valley, 1959-60 Industry leaders in this area also requested that different amounts of lint cleaning and overhead seed cotton cleaning be applied when testing the effects of various levels of moisture on cotton quality.by representatives Of the manufacturer. Machines were cleaned after each day's harvest, and trash was removed from the picking heads and basket every four rounds. All the picking was super vised by harvesting research personnel Of the us. Cotton Field Station, Shafter, Calif. Eighteen bales Of test cot-ton were harvested 011 each of 3 consecutive days making a total Of 54 bales. Each test lot consisted Of 1 full bale. Warm, sunny conditions prevailed throughout the harvest period. Temperature was normal for the time of year and was in the vicinity Of 80° F. Picking data for the stated dates were as follows. Book Effects of Reclaimed Gin Loss Cotton on Lint Quality and Spinning Performance Classic Reprint

Download or read book Effects of Reclaimed Gin Loss Cotton on Lint Quality and Spinning Performance Classic Reprint written by Shelby Herbert Holder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effects of Reclaimed Gin-Loss Cotton on Lint Quality and Spinning Performance Fiber arrays for reclaimed gin - loss cotton and for ginned lint showed that the overall length of gin-loss cotton was shorter than ginned lint from the same bale. E/ Array test results for this study were not consistent with this relationship, blended lots showed less short fiber than nonblended lots. Even though reclaimed fiber was blended into a bale continuously during gin ning, its small proportional share of the total mass would.make it particularty difficult to obtain representative fiber arrays. The significant difference in micronaire readings was probably due to inherent variability of cotton fibers. Since both lots had average fineness, the slight difference is probably not of practical importance. Nonblended and blended lots differed significantly in percent of waste removed by opening and picking, and carding processes. Blended lots averaged percent more total waste than nonblended lots (table This means that a blended 500-pound bale had pounds more waste than a nonblended.bale. However, according to the test results, an average of pounds of reclaimed fiber was added.per 500 pounds for blended lots. Thus, assuming that the pound increase in opener, picker, and card waste was due to blending. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Effects of Cotton Ginning Practices on Market Quality of Cotton

Download or read book Effects of Cotton Ginning Practices on Market Quality of Cotton written by Edward Henry Shanklin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effects of Cotton Ginning Practices on Market Quality of Cotton: A Mississippi Delta Variety, 1958-59 The study involved M2 bales of cotton ginned from three consecutive har vestings of dpt-15 cotton at Robinsonville, Mississippi, of which 36 bales were mechanically harvested, and 6 bales were picked by hand. Ginning condi tions included: elaborate and moderate seed-cotton cleaning; drying to pro vide both high and low-moisture lint with each seed-cotton cleaning treat ment; and three conditions of lint cleaning for each level of moisture: No lint cleaning, one lint cleaner, and two lint cleaners. The mechanically har vested cotton provided 3 replications for each of 12 ginning conditions. The handpicked cotton provided three replications each for the two extreme ginning conditions that were used with mechanically-harvested cotton. Cotton from.the first harvest contained less moisture than the second and third lots of seed cotton, and, consequently, needed less heat in drying dur ing ginning. Drying conditions were varied to provide high and low-moisture lint during ginning. The high-moisture lint averaged percent, and the low-moisture lint averaged percent. Grade for both machine and hand-picked cotton was improved by additional lint cleaning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
