Book The Impact of Amending Forest Soils with Wood Ash on Soil Organic Matter Attributes and Associated Properties

Download or read book The Impact of Amending Forest Soils with Wood Ash on Soil Organic Matter Attributes and Associated Properties written by Ruth Joseph and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wood ash, the byproduct of bioenergy production from biomass, is typically discarded into landfills as waste. Adding ash back to soil may supply nutrients to soil that are lost through biomass harvesting, increase soil pH, and improve site productivity, but the effects on soil organic carbon are not well known. In Canada, there are eight wood ash experiments across the country investigating the effects of ash addition on site productivity. In this study we measured soil carbon concentrations and estimated stores of total soil organic carbon, sand fraction carbon, microbial biomass carbon, hot water extractable carbon and mineralizable carbon in soils collected from these experiments. Analyses of variance (ANOVA) were conducted to determine the significant effect of different rates of wood ash application on each fraction. The difference between ash application rates was analyzed using Tukeys post-hoc test. Following ANOVA, a multivariate analysis was conducted using principal component analysis (PCA) to capture the variables significantly contributing to the total variation in the study. Results revealed that labile fractions were more responsive than the total carbon, but none of the measured attributes showed consistent change across the sites with ash addition. Carbon attributes that varied significantly (p

Book Organic Waste Composting through Nexus Thinking

Download or read book Organic Waste Composting through Nexus Thinking written by Hiroshan Hettiarachchi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic waste composting is another excellent example to demonstrate the power and the benefits of nexus thinking. Even though organic waste composting itself is not a new topic, those who want to start a new project or align an ongoing project with nexus thinking, find it difficult to gather the necessary information. With nine case studies from four continents, this book aims to fill above gap in literature. While current literature on composting is often found to be limited to either soil/agriculture sector or waste management sector, this book presents a combined point of view. This open access book starts with an introductory chapter that describes the need to bring the waste management aspects and soil nutrient management aspects of compost production into one integrated theme. The relevance of nexus thinking and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are also presented in this introduction. The first three chapters after the introduction covers composting from the solid waste management and its policy aspects, taking examples from three developing countries. The next three examples are mostly about the benefits composting can provide to the soil and agriculture. These examples are also from three developing countries, but with a mixture of urban as well as rural settings. Last three chapters present more insight into the latest developments taking examples from Europe, as well as new methods adapted from the traditional styles from Africa.

Book Biochar for Environmental Management

Download or read book Biochar for Environmental Management written by Dr. Johannes Lehmann and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2009 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Biochar is the carbon-rich product when biomass (such as wood, manure, or crop residues) is heated in a closed container with little or no available air. It can be used to improve agriculture and the environment in several ways, and its stability in soil and superior nutrient-retention properties make it an ideal soil amendment to increase crop yields. In addition to this, biochar sequestration, in combination with sustainable biomass production, can be carbon-negative and therefore used to actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, with major implications for mitigation of climate change. Biochar production can also be combined with bioenergy production through the use of the gases that are given off in the pyrolysis process. This book is the first to synthesize the expanding research literature on this topic. The book's interdisciplinary approach, which covers engineering, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, economics and policy, is a vital tool at this stage of biochar technology development. This comprehensive overview of current knowledge will be of interest to advanced students, researchers and professionals in a wide range of disciplines"--Provided by publisher.

  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book The Soil Will Save Us written by Kristin Ohlson and published by Rodale. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of years of poor farming and ranching practices—and, especially, modern industrial agriculture—have led to the loss of up to 80 percent of carbon from the world’s soils. That carbon is now floating in the atmosphere, and even if we stopped using fossil fuels today, it would continue warming the planet. In The Soil Will Save Us, journalist and bestselling author Kristin Ohlson makes an elegantly argued, passionate case for "our great green hope"—a way in which we can not only heal the land but also turn atmospheric carbon into beneficial soil carbon—and potentially reverse global warming. As the granddaughter of farmers and the daughter of avid gardeners, Ohlson has long had an appreciation for the soil. A chance conversation with a local chef led her to the crossroads of science, farming, food, and environmentalism and the discovery of the only significant way to remove carbon dioxide from the air—an ecological approach that tends not only to plants and animals but also to the vast population of underground microorganisms that fix carbon in the soil. Ohlson introduces the visionaries—scientists, farmers, ranchers, and landscapers—who are figuring out in the lab and on the ground how to build healthy soil, which solves myriad problems: drought, erosion, air and water pollution, and food quality, as well as climate change. Her discoveries and vivid storytelling will revolutionize the way we think about our food, our landscapes, our plants, and our relationship to Earth.
