The resulting book, Noise and Military Service: Implications for Hearing Loss and Tinnitus, presents findings on the presence of hazardous noise in military settings, levels of noise exposure necessary to cause hearing loss or tinnitus, risk factors for noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus, the timing of the effects of noise exposure on hearing, and the adequacy of military hearing conservation programs and audiometric testing. The book stresses the importance of conducting hearing tests (audiograms) at the beginning and end of military service for all military personnel and recommends several steps aimed at improving the military services' prevention of and surveillance for hearing loss and tinnitus. The book also identifies research needs, emphasizing topics specifically related to military service.

The first and primary goal is to begin the systematic development of a data base from which one could estimate the hazards to hearing resulting from exposure to blast waves or other high level impulse noise transients. To achieve this primary objective the following two objectives must first be achieved: (1) to develop a methodology to efficiently acquire data on a large number of experimental animals that have been exposed to a variety variables; (2) to develop a set of blast wave simulation devices which can reliably generate blast waves with a variable distribution of spectral energy in a laboratory environment. This report will describe progress that was achieved on each of these objectives. The evaluation of hearing consisted of pre- and postexposure measurements of pure tone thresholds and tuning curves (masked thresholds). Quantitative and qualitative preparation technique. Although this report is directed primarily toward the noise produced during space activities, the effects upon man will be similar regardless of the specific noise source. Data are presented dealing with physical acoustics, the characteristics of sound and appropriate noise measurement techniques. Hearing loss resulting from both steady-state and impulse noise is discussed along with factors influencing its acquisition and recovery and the resultant effects upon performance. Subjective and behavioral response to noise is discussed in terms of masking of auditory signals and speech, annoyance and general observation. Current research in the areas of nonauditory effects is reviewed varying from cardiovascular alterations to the risk of death. Current design criteria are presented for both steady-state and impulse noise for both workspaces and communities.

Translational Research moves promising basic science results from the laboratory to bedside application. Yet, this transition is often the least-defined, least-understood part of the research process. Most scientific training programs provide little or no systematic introduction to the issues, challenges, and obstacles that prevent effective research translation, even though these are the key steps that enable high-impact basic science to ultimately result in significant clinical advances that improve patient outcome. This volume will provide an overview of key issues in translation of research from “bedside to bench to bedside”, not only from the perspective of the key funding agencies, but also from the scientists and clinicians who are currently involved in the translational research process. It will attempt to offer insight into real-world experience with intellectual property and technology transfer activities that can help move auditory technologies ahead, as scientists and clinicians typically have little or no formal training in these areas. Book excerpt: For the 119 species of marine mammals, as well as for some other aquatic animals, sound is the primary means of learning about the environment and of communicating, navigating, and foraging. The possibility that human-generated noise could harm marine mammals or significantly interfere with their normal activities is an issue of increasing concern. Noise and its potential impacts have been regulated since the passage of the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. Public awareness of the issue escalated in 1990s when researchers began using high-intensity sound to measure ocean climate changes. More recently, the stranding of beaked whales in proximity to Navy sonar use has again put the issue in the spotlight. Ocean Noise and Marine Mammals reviews sources of noise in the ocean environment, what is known of the responses of marine mammals to acoustic disturbance, and what models exist for describing ocean noise and marine mammal responses. Recommendations are made for future data gathering efforts, studies of marine mammal behavior and physiology, and modeling efforts necessary to determine what the long- and short-term impacts of ocean noise on marine mammals.

The first and primary goal is to study the effects of high level blast wave exposure on the conductive and sensory structures of the mammalian ear. This includes the use of the auditory evoked potential to measure hearing thresholds and tuning curves prior to and after exposure to various blast wave exposures. Parameters of the blast waves studied include intensity, spectral composition, number of impulses and repetition rate. Correlations among hearing measures, exposure variables and histology have been developed. To achieve the above, the following two objectives must be completed: 1) develop a series of blast wave generation devices which are suitable for the laboratory simulation of a wide spectrum of blast waves; and develop a suitable set of software and a PC-based computer system which will interact with crystal and capacitive microphones to capture and analyze blast waves. Four sources have been developed along with the specified analysis system. The results from the Source I (a conventional shock tube) were summarized in reports ADA 206-180 and ADA 203-854. This report summaries the results from Source II, a 5-inch Lamont valve-driven shock tube.

Book excerpt: Low-frequency impulsive noise, characteristic of demolitions, artillery, and armor, is difficult to mitigate. In 2001, ERDC-CERL researchers were tasked to study the potential attenuation caused by a forest. After a thorough review of published work, it was determined that an experiment was necessary. This took place in July 2002 at the Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant in Texarkana, Texas. This report presents the data analysis and draws conclusions about the effectiveness of a forest stand on noise mitigation. Additionally, some predictive modeling has been performed, and those results also are included.
