Book Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Titanium Alloys written by Maciej Motyka and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanium alloys, due to unique physical and chemical properties (mainly high relative strength combined with very good corrosion resistance), are considered as an important structural metallic material used in hi-tech industries (e.g. aerospace, space technology). This book provides information on new manufacturing and processing methods of single- and two-phase titanium alloys. The eight chapters of this book are distributed over four sections. The first section (Introduction) indicates the main factors determining application areas of titanium and its alloys. The second section (Manufacturing, two chapters) concerns modern production methods for titanium and its alloys. The third section (Thermomechanical and surface treatment, three chapters) covers problems of thermomechanical processing and surface treatment used for single- and two-phase titanium alloys. The fourth section (Machining, two chapters) describes the recent results of high speed machining of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the possibility of application of sustainable machining for titanium alloys.

Book Influence of Microstructure on Elevated Temperature Fatigue Resistance of a Titanium Alloy

Download or read book Influence of Microstructure on Elevated Temperature Fatigue Resistance of a Titanium Alloy written by C. Hoffmann and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strain-controlled, elevated-temperature, low-cycle fatigue behavior of a near ? titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo-0.1Si (Ti-6242S), has been studied in both air and vacuum (10-5 torr) at 525°C over a range of frequency and strain. Of particular interest in this investigation were the influence of microstructure and environment on fatigue behavior. Two different microstructures were obtained by combinations of mechanical processing and heat treatment above and below the ?-transus temperature. Particular attention was given to these microstructural variations and to the effect of environment on the high-temperature low-cycle fatigue behavior of this alloy. The nature of fatigue crack initiation sites was examined by a precision sectioning method. The microstructure was found to have a pronounced effect on fatigue life as well as on the fatigue crack initiation process. Tests performed in vacuum revealed no influence of frequency on fatigue life, which indicated that environmental factors were responsible for the observed frequency effect on tests performed in air. It was also observed that testing in vacuum led to the formation of a number of subsurface crack nucleation sites and to a longer fatigue life. Crack origins in specimens tested in air were located at the surface, and the initiation sites were larger than those observed in vacuum. The features of a fatigue resistant microstructure in addition to environmental effects at elevated temperature are identified and discussed.

Book Effect of Microstructures on Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior in a TC6 Ti 6AI 2 5Mo 2Cr 0 5Fe 0 3Si Titanium Alloy

Download or read book Effect of Microstructures on Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior in a TC6 Ti 6AI 2 5Mo 2Cr 0 5Fe 0 3Si Titanium Alloy written by Zhang SQ and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of an investigation on the low cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior, at room temperature and 400°C for four conventional microstructures (Widmannstatten, basket-weave, equiaxed, and duplex) in a TC6 titanium alloy are presented. The fatigue crack nucleation and propagation in fatigue-tested specimens have been observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The duplex microstructure is associated with the longest LCF life at room temperature and 400°C, while the Widmannstatten microstructure has the shortest. The crack initiation sites and propagation paths were examined and discussed. The cracks primarily initiated along slip bands on the specimen surface for all four microstructures. In addition, many voids appeared along slip bands for the equiaxed microstructure. By linking-up these voids, the formation of microcracks is realized. The propagation of interior cracks in specimens with Widmannstatten structure proceeded by cross-cutting W? platelets by way of a plastic blunting mechanism, whereas for the equiaxed microstructure interior cracks grew by the linking-up of voids by way of a renucleation mechanism.

Book Fatigue of Beta Processed and Beta Heat treated Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Fatigue of Beta Processed and Beta Heat treated Titanium Alloys written by Russell Wanhill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-28 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication reviews most of the available literature on the fatigue properties of β annealed Ti-6Al-4V and titanium alloys with similar microstructures. The focus is on β processed and β heat-treated alloys because β annealed Ti-6Al-4V has been selected for highly loaded and fatigue-critical structures, including the main wing-carry-through bulkheads and vertical tail stubs, of advanced high-performance military aircraft. An important aspect of the review is a concise survey of fatigue life assessment methods and the required types of fatigue data. This survey provides the background to recommendations for further research, especially on the fatigue behaviour of β annealed Ti-6Al-4V under realistic fatigue load histories, including the essential topic of short/small fatigue crack growth. Such research is required for independent fatigue life assessments that conform to the aircraft manufacturer’s design requirements, and also for life reassessments that most probably will have to be made during the service life of the aircraft.

Book Influence of Microstructure on Fretting Fatigue Behavior of a Near alpha Titanium Alloy

Download or read book Influence of Microstructure on Fretting Fatigue Behavior of a Near alpha Titanium Alloy written by T. Satoh and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To investigate the effect of microstructure on the fretting fatigue behavior of a near-? titanium alloy, fretting fatigue tests were carried out using DAT54, which is used in compressor blades and disks in aircraft gas turbine engines. Two kinds of microstructure in DAT54 were prepared using different solution heat treatment temperatures: one is the equiaxed ? + ? lath microstructure and the other is the transformed ? structure. The plain and fretting fatigue strengths for the equiaxed ? + ? lath microstructure are higher than for the transformed ? structure. Fretting reduced fatigue strengths by a factor of three for both materials. Sensitivity to microstructure in fretting fatigue is relatively low compared with plain fatigue. Shot peening improved fretting fatigue life, because of lower tangential force between the specimen and the contact pad and because of residual stress in compression induced by shot peening treatment.

Book Effect of Microstructure on the Fatigue Properties of Ti 6Al 4V Bar

Download or read book Effect of Microstructure on the Fatigue Properties of Ti 6Al 4V Bar written by LJ. Bartlo and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microstructure can have a significant effect on the mechanical properties of titanium alloys. The extent of this effect on the fatigue properties of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy in small diameter bar (0.625 in., 15.875 mm) was studied. Microstructural variations were produced by heat treating from 1550 to 1950 F at 100 F intervals. Three different cooling rates (furnace cooling, air cooling, and water quenching) were employed for each temperature. The room-temperature tensile, smooth, and notch-fatigue properties were evaluated for each thermal condition.
