Book Effects of Microstructure and Frequency on Corrosion Fatigue Crack Growth in Ti 8Al 1Mo 1V and Ti 6Al 4V

Download or read book Effects of Microstructure and Frequency on Corrosion Fatigue Crack Growth in Ti 8Al 1Mo 1V and Ti 6Al 4V written by LA. Cooley and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth studies were conducted on Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V and Ti-6Al-4V alloys in 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution. Each alloy was studied in two microstructural conditions and at two cyclic frequencies. Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V was heat-treated to produce a fine-grained duplex anneal microstructure and a coarse-grained Widmanstätten microstructure resulting from a beta anneal. The two microstructural conditions for the Ti-6Al-4V were an as-received mill anneal and a beta anneal. The two cyclic frequencies were 0.1 and 5.0 Hz. Each of the four alloy/microstructure combinations studied has been the subject of prior investigation regarding fatigue crack growth rate/microstructure interactions in ambient air environments. For both alloys, crack growth rates in air were found to be significantly reduced as a result of microstructural modifications associated with the beta anneal heat treatment. Although the salt water environment significantly accelerated crack growth rates for both alloys, this same ranking of fatigue crack growth resistance persisted in the present study. Both microstructures of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibited a frequency crossover effect; in contrast, no significant frequency effects were observed in Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V in either microstructure. Similar frequency effects were seen in separate specimens cycled at a single constant frequency or in single specimens cycled at two alternating frequencies. Out-of-plane cracking was observed in both alloys in the beta-annealed condition. The effects of varying degrees of out-of-plane cracking on apparent crack growth rates are noted.

Book Corrosion Fatigue Cracking Response of Beta Annealed Ti 6Al 4V Alloy in 3 5 NaCl Solution

Download or read book Corrosion Fatigue Cracking Response of Beta Annealed Ti 6Al 4V Alloy in 3 5 NaCl Solution written by S. Chiou and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic investigation has been conducted to examine the effect of frequency on fatigue crack growth in a beta-annealed Ti-6Al-4V alloy in 3.5% NaCl solution at room temperature. Fractographic and metallographic examinations were also made to help identify the probable mechanism for crack growth enhancement (or embrittlement) and to evaluate the frequency effect. Fatigue crack growth tests covered a range of frequencies from 0.03 to 15 Hz and a range of K sub max levels from about 16 to 61 MPA-m1/2. The results show that fatigue crack growth rates increased with decreasing frequency, and then decreased with further decreases in frequency. The frequency at which the crack growth rates reached a maximum depended on the K level, and is inversely proportional to delta K cubed. The fracture surface morphology also depended strongly on frequency and K level, and suggested that the enhancement of crack growth resulted from the formation and rupture of a hydride phase. Based on the experimental observations, crack growth response is interpreted in terms of control by hydrogen diffusion and of a critical strain rate required for hydride formation in the crack tip region. Book Handbook of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Metallic Structures

Download or read book Handbook of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Metallic Structures written by Andrea Carpinteri and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1994 with total page 980 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. The purpose of this Handbook is to provide a review of the knowledge and experiences in the field of fatigue fracture mechanics. It is well-known that engineering structures can fail due to cyclic loading. For instance, a cyclically time-varying loading reduces the structure strength and can provoke a fatigue failure consisting of three stages: (a) crack initiation (b) crack propagation and (c) catastrophic failure. Since last century many scientists have tried to understand the reasons for the above-mentioned failures and how to prevent them. This Handbook contains valuable contributions from leading experts within the international scientific community and covers many of the important problems associated with the fatigue phenomena in civil, mechanical and nuclear engineering.

Book Fatigue Crack Growth in Ti 6Al 4V from Threshold to Unstable Fracture

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth in Ti 6Al 4V from Threshold to Unstable Fracture written by Maurice F. Amateau and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatigue crack growth of Ti-6Al-4V in the diffusion bond annealed condition was examined in the range of growth rates from 10 to the minus 12th power to 10 to the minus 4th power m/cycle with the use of compact tension and part-through-crack specimens. The effects of cyclic frequency and maximum stress were investigated. Fractured surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy over the entire range of crack growth. The fatigue data were fit empirically to a number of crack propagation laws, none of which was able to predict the entire range of crack growth from threshold to unstable fracture. When the fatigue crack growth rates were compared with those of Ti-6Al-4V of other microstructures, it was found that the diffusion bond annealed was among the most fatigue crack resistant of any microstructure examined. Book Improvement of Environmental Crack Propagation Resistance in Ti 8Al 1Mo 1V Through Microstructural Modification

Download or read book Improvement of Environmental Crack Propagation Resistance in Ti 8Al 1Mo 1V Through Microstructural Modification written by G. R. Yoder and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study has been conducted to improve crack tolerance properties of Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V through microstructural modification. Alloy microstructure was modified relative to that associated with the currently used duplex anneal through variations in heat treatment. Measurements were made of (i) fatigue crack growth in air, (ii) stress-corrosion cracking in 3.5% aqueous sodium chloride solution, and (iii) corrosion-fatigue in 3.5% aqueous sodium chloride solution. Results indicate that relative to crack tolerance properties of the duplex-annealed microstructure, the beta-annealed Widmanstatten microstructure offers superior resistance on all three bases of comparison; specifically, a 40-fold improvement in fatigue crack growth resistance in ambient air, a doubling of stress-corrosion-cracking threshold, and a resistance to corrosion-fatigue which exceeds the fatigue crack growth resistance of the duplex anneal in ambient air. Micromechanistic interpretations are discussed as appropriate. (Author).

Book Corrosion Fatigue Properties of Recrystallization Annealed Ti 6A1 4V

Download or read book Corrosion Fatigue Properties of Recrystallization Annealed Ti 6A1 4V written by DW. Hoeppner and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The corrosion-fatigue crack growth properties of recrystallization annealed (RA) Ti-6A1-4V were studied in room-temperature laboratory air, dry air, high-humidity air, sump-tank water, and 3.5 percent sodium chloride (NaCl) solution environments. The alloy was characterized by chemical, microstructural, and tensile properties. Corrosion fatigue tests were conducted using wedge-opening-load (WOL), center-cracked-through (CCT) and part-through-cracked (PTC) specimens. Frequency and environmental interactions were studied as well as the effects of orientation and stress ratio. The effect of frequency was to increase the fatigue crack growth rate as the frequency was decreased. A severe effect of frequency was noted in sump-tank water and saltwater where at low frequencies, crack growth rates increased to such a high level that failure occurred at Kmax levels significantly below those expected. Fractographic studies showed no apparent cause of this phenomenon.
