Book Large Deflections of Circular Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Large Deflections of Circular Cylindrical Shells written by Joseph Kempner and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several investigators have presented results which indicate that the disagreement between experimental collapse loads and buckling loads predicted by classical small-deflection theory for axially compressed thin-walled circular cylinders can be adequately explained with the use of approximate large-deflection energy analyses. The snap-through manner of collapse is explained by the fact that finite-deflection equilibrium configurations exist for loads or strains considerably lower than those predicted by classical theory. Recently, several investigators have applied similar large-deflection analyses in search of an explanation of the discrepancy between experiment and classical theory for cylinders under external hydrostatic pressure. In the present notes a summary is given of results of large-deflection analyses of homogeneous, isotropic cylinders under axial compression and under hydrostatic pressure, the effect of asymmetric and axially symmetric initial deformations on the load-deflection characteristics of hydrostatically loaded shells is determined. Book General Elastic Plastic Instability of Ring Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Under External Pressure

Download or read book General Elastic Plastic Instability of Ring Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Under External Pressure written by Lawrence H. N. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A variational principle and associated criteria on bifurcation and stability of elastic-plastic solids, which are expressed in terms of Lagrangian variables, are described. The principle is employed to study the effects of prebuckling deformation and yield surface corners on the inelastic asymmetric buckling of a ring-stiffened cylindrical shell under external pressure. The shell is made of a work hardening material having incremental type constitutive relationships associated with either Mises's yield surface or a yield surface with corners. An incremental Rayleigh-Ritz numerical method is employed to determine the non-linear deformation process and asymmetric bifurcation pressure. Numerical results are obtained and compared with available experimental results. (Author).

Book General Instability of Stiffened Circular Conical Shells Under Hydrostatic Pressure

Download or read book General Instability of Stiffened Circular Conical Shells Under Hydrostatic Pressure written by Menahem Baruch and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donnell type equilibrium and stability equations are derived for stiffened thin conical shells. The stiffeners are considered closely spaced and are therefore assumed to be ''distributed'' over the whole surface of the shell. In the proposed theory the stiffeners and their spacing may vary in any prescribed manner, but here only equally spaced stiffeners are dealt with. The force - and moment - strain relations of the combined stiffener-sheet cross-section are determined by the assumption of identical normal strains at the contact surface of stiffener and sheet. The stability equations are solved for general instability under hydrostatic pressure by the method of virtual displacements. The solution used earlier for unstiffened conical shells, which satisfies some of the boundary conditions of simple supports only approximately, is again applied here. The effect of this incomplete compliance with boundary conditions is shown to be negligible by consideration of ''boundary work''. The solution proposed for stiffened conical shells involves the concepts of ''correcting coefficients'' and minimization of corresponding ''error loads''. Typical examples are analysed and the effect of eccentricity of stiffeners is investigated. Simplified approximate formulae for the critical pressure of frame-stiffened conical shells are also proposed. (Author).

Book Stress Distribution in a Stiffened Circular Cylindrical Shell with a Circular Cutout Under Hydrostatic Pressure

Download or read book Stress Distribution in a Stiffened Circular Cylindrical Shell with a Circular Cutout Under Hydrostatic Pressure written by M. M. Stanisic and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report covers the theoretical analysis of a cylindrical shell with a circular cutout and stiffened internally with equally spaced rings. The shell is considered to be infinitely long, capped at the ends and subjected to internal pressure. The exact solution of the partial differential equations of Donnell's and Flugge's theories of thin cylindrical shells is obtained in the form of an infinite series. Fourier expansions and the method of least square error are employed to satisfy the boundary conditions. Typical numerical results for the case of two ring stiffeners are presented at the end of the report. (Author).

Book Pressure Vessels

Download or read book Pressure Vessels written by Carl T. F. Ross and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-04-30 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The choice of structural design and material is essential in preventing the external walls of a vessel from buckling under pressure. In this revised second edition of Pressure vessels, Carl Ross reviews the problem and uses both theoretical and practical examples to show how it can be solved for different structures. The second edition opens with an overview of the types of vessels under external pressure and materials used for construction. Axisymmetric deformation and different types of instability are discussed in the following chapters, with chapters 5 and 6 covering vibration of pressure vessel shells, both in water and out. Chapters 7 and 8 focus on novel pressure hulls, covering design, vibration and collapse, while chapters 9 and 10 concentrate on the design and non-linear analysis of submarine pressure hulls under external hydrostatic pressure. In chapter 11, the design, structure and materials of deep-diving underwater pressure vessels are discussed, focusing on their application in missile defence systems. Finally, chapter 12 analyses the vibration of a thin-walled shell under external water pressure, using ANSYS technology.Drawing on the author's extensive experience in engineering and design both in an industrial and academic capacity, the second edition of Pressure vessels is an essential reference for stress analysts, designers, consultants and manufacturers of pressure vessels, as well as all those with an academic research interest in the area. - Presents an overview of the types of vessels under external pressure and materials used for construction - Assesses axisymmetric deformation and different types of instability covering vibration of pressure vessel shells - Explores novel pressure hulls, covering design, vibration and collapse concentrating on the design and non-linear analysis of submarine pressure hulls

Book Concerning the Effect of the Eccentricity of Reinforcement Upon the Stability of Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Concerning the Effect of the Eccentricity of Reinforcement Upon the Stability of Cylindrical Shells written by K. E. Byrsan and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The article deals with circular cylindrical shells of arbitrary length, which are regarded as structurally anisotropic. The problem of stability is solved by the energy method. Hypotheses of the absence of shears in the middle surface and other inextensibility of the contour of the cross section were adopted. The expressions for the critical loads as functions of the parameters of wave formation with an axially symmetric initial state of the shell were obtained from a solution of the equation of Euler's variational problem. Note is taken of weakening of the effect of the influence of eccentricity with an increase in the length of the shell. (Author).

Book Effects of Internal Pressure on the Buckling of Circular Cylindrical Shell Under Bending

Download or read book Effects of Internal Pressure on the Buckling of Circular Cylindrical Shell Under Bending written by V. Weingarten and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of internal pressure on the stability of thin walled cylinders under pure bending is investigated by means of modified Donnell equation. The results indicate that, unlike the results for the case of pressurized cylinders under compression, the critical maximum compression stress due to bending increases with internal pressure. The theoretically predicted increases are much less, however, than those obtained experimentally. (Author).

Book The Stability Under Axial Compression and Lateral Pressure of Circular cylindrical Shells with a Soft Elastic Core

Download or read book The Stability Under Axial Compression and Lateral Pressure of Circular cylindrical Shells with a Soft Elastic Core written by Paul Seide and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stability under axial compression and lateral pressure of a finite circular-cylindrical shell with an elastic core is treated by means of Donnell's equations.
