Book A Review of Fatigue Crack Growth of Pressure Vessel and Piping Steels in High temperature Pressurized Reactor grade Water

Download or read book A Review of Fatigue Crack Growth of Pressure Vessel and Piping Steels in High temperature Pressurized Reactor grade Water written by W. H. Cullen and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth data sets, for pressure vessel and piping steels, in reactor-grade water environment have appeared in various reports and publications since about 1972. All of the results which have been published from 1972 through 1979 have been plotted and are presented in this report. Beginning with a discussion of the need for these data, and an explanation of the laboratory facilities which are required for this research, this report goes on to describe the overall trends which have evolved through consideration of the data sets and the conditions under which they were generated. A model for hydrogen assisted fatigue crack growth is described and applied to the pressurized water reactor type of environment. A complete listing of references is included in the report. Book Effect of Irradiation on Elastic Plastic Toughness of Pressure Vessel Steels

Download or read book Effect of Irradiation on Elastic Plastic Toughness of Pressure Vessel Steels written by P. Soulat and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irradiation experiments were conducted in order to determine the effect of radiation damage on the elastic-plastic ductile fracture toughness of pressure vessel steels. Curves for the J-integral versus crack growth resistance (?a) were established on specimens taken out of two nuclear reactor pressure vessel steels before and after neutron irradiation at 290°C to a fluence of 3.1019 n/cm2 (work function energy E > 1 MeV). The J-?a tests were performed at room temperature (25°C) and service temperature (290°C). The main results obtained are as follows:.

Book Fracture Toughness of Pressure Vessel Materials for Light Water Reactors

Download or read book Fracture Toughness of Pressure Vessel Materials for Light Water Reactors written by F. J. Loss and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes progress in a cooperative research program between the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and NRL on the fracture toughness of steels for nuclear reactor pressure vessels. For its contribution EPRI furnished a major protion of the materials and test specimens for the study by NRL. The program is also being conducted in collaboration with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research, and the Office of Naval Research. Related NRC sponsored work of broader scope is underway at NRL. A portion of the NRC work pertaining to the fracture toughness of nuclear pressure boundary materials is also reported here because of its relevance to the subject effort. The principal objectives of this program are: (1) to characterize the dynamic fracture initiation toughness K sub Id of three heats of LWR pressure vessel steel, (2) to develop experimental and analytical techniques for the interpretation and analysis of notched, three-point bend specimen behavior under impact loading, and (3) to assess the validity of plane strain K sub Id values as projected from the elastic plastic (J integral) analysis of smaller specimens. The present report describes progress in the dynamic toughness assessment of program materials by means of 1-in. (25mm) bend and precracked Charpy-V specimens. Also described is a one-dimensional, theoretical characterization of the forces and bending moments developed during impact of a notched beam. (Author).

Book The Effect of Constraint Due to Out of Plane Stress Field on Fracture of Reactor Pressure Vessel Steel An Experimental and Numerical Study

Download or read book The Effect of Constraint Due to Out of Plane Stress Field on Fracture of Reactor Pressure Vessel Steel An Experimental and Numerical Study written by D. Detty and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research on crack-tip constraint on fracture, including the effect of in-plane biaxial stress fields, has led to a two-parameter elastic K-T and elasto-plastic J-Q approach to correlate fracture toughness. These approaches predict a significant influence of biaxial stress state on fracture toughness. In the case of reactor pressure vessels undergoing pressurized thermal shock (PTS), significant stresses induced parallel to the crack front (out-of-plane stresses) offer additional constraint at the crack-tip. In order to evaluate the effect of this out-of-plane stress field on fracture of reactor pressure vessel steels, a unique method for testing a cruciform-type double-edge notch, DEN(T), specimen loaded in biaxial tension was developed. Three-dimensional finite-element analyses were conducted to design the specimen configuration. Details of the experimental and analytical results and the significance of the crack-tip constraint, due to biaxial stress state involving out-of-plane stresses, on the fracture toughness in the transition region are presented.

Book Radiation Effects on the Metallurgical Fracture Parameters and Fracture Toughness of Pressure Vessel Steels

Download or read book Radiation Effects on the Metallurgical Fracture Parameters and Fracture Toughness of Pressure Vessel Steels written by DR. Ireland and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of radiation on tensile properties, notch bend properties, and fracture toughness was determined on A212B steel from the Pathfinder reactor surveillance program and on A533B steel from the U.S. AEC Heavy Section Technology program. Impact tests were performed on an instrumented Charpy machine which provided load-deflection data in addition to energy absorption data. Valid fracture toughness values were obtained from precracked Charpy specimens.

Book The Effects of Mechanical Stress Gradients on Irradiation Induced Embrittlement of Pressure Vessel Steel

Download or read book The Effects of Mechanical Stress Gradients on Irradiation Induced Embrittlement of Pressure Vessel Steel written by John G. Williams and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of cracks and locally elevated stress fields in enhancing embrittlement in nuclear pressure vessel steels is assessed. The (elastic) stress field surrounding a crack tip can attract oversized or reject undersized solute atoms. The extent of the attraction or rejection depends on the size difference between the solvent and the solute atom, the temperature, the diffusivity of the solute, and the applied stress intensity. Under certain conditions, it is possible for solute atoms to concentrate near the crack tip and influence its growth. In the present study, a kinetic model for the concentration of solute atoms at crack tips is developed. This model is applied to the examination of the kinetics of enhanced concentrations of copper (Cu), sulfur (S), and phosphorus (P) near crack tips in ferrite. The effects of irradiation on the kinetics of the concentration process are also modeled. Finally, the consequences of such solute concentrations for fracture properties are examined in light of both the potential elevation in yield strength and the lowering of fracture strength. The consequences are found to be significant in pressure vessel steels at typical reactor vessel operating temperatures when irradiation enhanced diffusion accelerates the segregation process.
