Book Effects of Environmental Service learning on Locus of Control and Critical Thinking of Middle School Students

Download or read book Effects of Environmental Service learning on Locus of Control and Critical Thinking of Middle School Students written by Sarah Virginia Bosch and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper documents a service-learning project completed by an advanced seventh grade science class taught by the author of the paper. The research shows an increase of an internal locus of control and the development of reflective judgment through the ill-structured nature of the service-learning project. The study uses the Reflective Judgment Model created by King and Kitchner and follows Eyler and Giles's study to apply the Reflective Judgment Model to service-learning. Students show an increase of 0.4 in their reflective judgment on a four point scale. Eighteen percent more of the student had an internal locus of control for environmental issues after the project. Only three of the 26 students had an external locus of control after the project. The increases were measured with a pre- and post-survey, and the project showed an increase in seventh graders' locus of control and reflective judgment after completing an environmental service-learning project.

Book excerpt: Learners and learning is the fourth module in the study of education series, and it aims to enable teachers to analyse learning and reflect on what they can do to improve it. It draws on the learning theories of various writers, including Piaget and Vygotsky, and grounds these in examples, practical exercises, and case studies drawn from schools. This module includes an interactive learning guide, a reader, and an audiotape. The study of education series is a project of the South African institute for distance eduaction (SAIDE). Aimed at formal and informal teacher education, this series presents valuable open-learning materials for use in distance education or in face-to-face teaching. Intended for use in colleges of education at diploma level, these modules may also be usedwith additional readings in higher or postgraduate diploma courses.

Book A Look Into Locus of Control

Download or read book A Look Into Locus of Control written by Lana Sue Rohrer and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarching question guiding this grounded theory research is, how will understanding more about what shapes students' locus of control change the way educators teach about environmental issues? This research is motivated by the author's teaching experiences in which students expressed feelings of hopelessness after learning about environmental issues. Key influences included graduate professors, colleagues, current and former students, and the authors Smith-Sebasto, Hungerford and Volk, and Rotter. Participants, who were high school biology students, were given a locus of control survey before and after the ecology unit. Additionally, a modified one minute paper was distributed after the unit to generate qualitative data. Data showed that students who had an internal orientation for locus of control were more likely to believe their actions could positively impact the environment.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The research question addressed in the project was, how does the addition of environmental education to STEM education influence opinions, interest, and locus of control of middle school students? This capstone documents the modifying and implementation process of the Clean Water project developed by Yvonne Ng and presents to middle school students. It integrated the use of problem solving skills when learning about the environmental issue of clean water resources by use of various materials and multiple technologies. Book The Effects of Role play on Concept Understanding and Critical Thinking Skills of Middle School Students

Download or read book The Effects of Role play on Concept Understanding and Critical Thinking Skills of Middle School Students written by Brian Scott Phillips and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this capstone investigation students learned about environmental science topics through the use of role-play to determine how their understanding of the subject matter would change. The study also looked into the effect of role-play on students' critical thinking, their motivation and attitude, as well as the teacher's motivation and attitude. During two treatment units students were assigned fictitious characters with an array of problems and situations and the students researched the assigned topic through the eyes of their character. At the end of each unit, students gathered for a debate that would take place while in character. A combination of pre and postunit assessments, surveys, interviews, pro and con grids, journal entries, and colleague observations were utilized to gather data about students and the teacher. Results showed an improvement in student understanding, critical thinking, and attitudes and motivation. The results also revealed an improvement in the teacher's attitude and motivation.
