Book excerpt: This qualitative research study examined how math interventionists and special education teachers collaborated with general education teachers. I focused on improving access to the core general education mathematics curriculum for elementary students with mathematics difficulty. Differing educational perspectives, divergent learning theories, and instructional approaches, as well as various curriculum materials, make collaboration between multiple teachers complex work. To foster collaboration and attend to the instructional needs of students with mathematics difficulty, I provided an eight-week professional development series. The series included the following topics: developing co-teaching roles and responsibilities, understanding principles of Cognitively Guided Instruction, understanding the Five Practices, creating rich math tasks, and using a multi-tiered system of support so students with mathematics difficulty could improve understandings. Data collected included interviews and observations before and after the professional development, as well as audio recordings during collaboration meetings and during professional learning community meetings. I found that for the teachers in this study, teachers' perception of student need and teachers' ability to create a learning trajectory affected the co-teaching relationship. I found that when participating teachers co-designed instruction by reframing math tasks and planned using the Five Practices, they focused on instruction to help students with mathematics difficulty attend to gaps in understandings. I also found that professional development supported math instruction through lesson summary enactment and lesson summary discourse patterns. Providing focused and intentional instruction, so students address and resolve mathematics difficulty is a worthy and important goal. This study endeavored to highlight ways mathematics educators and teacher leaders can support teachers and students who have mathematical difficulties.

Book excerpt: To accommodate the presence of special education students in general education classrooms, many schools have implemented collaborative teaching or co-teaching, a model in which two or more teachers share responsibility for a group of students. While myriad research has demonstrated that this model benefits special education students, very little researchers have examined the effect of co-teaching upon the general education student, who often outnumber the special education students. The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative study was to investigate co-teaching’s impact upon the mathematic achievement of general education students. The independent variable in this study was students’ placement into either a) co-teacher classrooms or b) single teacher classrooms. The dependent variable was students’ scores on the STARâ assessment by Renaissance Learningâ. Students’ scores on a previous administration of the test were covariates in the study. In addition to making the aforementioned comparison, the researcher looked for significant differences between the test scores of cotaught females and cotaught males. The researcher used an ANCOVA to run these analyses and observed no significant difference between the test scores of the treatment and control groups. The results also failed to yield a significant difference between the males and the females. While there was no significant difference among the general education students, the researcher implied that the fact that general education students did not perform at a significantly lower level might actually validate the collaborative teaching model. Future researchers should consider either duplicating this study with a larger, more diverse sample or conduct a similar study that also examines the efficacy with which collaborative teaching is being implemented.

Book excerpt: The study was to determine the impact of a Professional Learning Community on student achievement as measured by the state's criterion referenced reading and mathematics achievement tests. Data for this study were extracted from the school district's student database. Two cohorts of 90 students each were randomly selected from a population of approximately 600 students in 3 schools that participated in a Professional Learning Community (treatment) and 3 schools that did not (control). Professional Learning Communities known as PLCs, can serve as a major theoretical framework to promote the improvement of classroom teachers' instructional practice, teacher effectiveness and student achievement. Reading and mathemtics mean scale scores were extracted at three time points (year 1, year 2, and year 3) across three grades (grade 3, grade 4 and grade 5). Test for equality of variance found that no statistically significant difference existed between the mean scale scores of the two cohorts at the beginning of the study. The findings revealed that both cohorts trend toward increased academic achievement from year to year individually; however, when compared to each other, no statistically significant difference existed. Further research is indicated to examine each PLC for implementation, support and leadership as they relate to the PLC and a focus on instruction and learning.
