Book Photoionization and Other Probes of Many Electron Interactions

Download or read book Photoionization and Other Probes of Many Electron Interactions written by F. Wuilleumier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Study Institute on "Photoionization and Other Probes of Many-Electron Interactions" was held at the Centre "Les Cigales" in Carry-Ie-Rouet (France), from August 31st till September 13th 1975. The Institute was sponsored by the Scienti fic Affairs Division of NATO. The "Centre National de la Recher che Scientifique" (France) gave also partial support to the French participants and the National Science Foundation (U. S . A. ) to the American participants. A total of 18 lecturers, and 54 students selected among more than 120 applicants, attended the Institute. Over the last few years, substantial progress has been made in the experimental study of photon- or electron interactions with atoms. In particular, the g. rowing number of facilities created to use the synchrotron radiation makes now possible the realization of new types of experiments. The accumulation of new results showed clearly it was necessary to introduce electron correlations in the theoretical models in order to explain the existence and the probability of a large number of processes, in particular multiple processes. Thus large progress has also been made in the theore tical description of the excitation of the electronic systems and their interactions. It was the purpose of this Institute to bring together theoreticians and experimentalists in order to provide an opportunity to present in details the state of the art, in experiment as well as in theory, and to favor discussions on future experimen tal and theoretical studies.

Book The Effect of Several Configuration Interaction Target States on the Elastic Scattering of Low energy Electrons by Complex Atoms

Download or read book The Effect of Several Configuration Interaction Target States on the Elastic Scattering of Low energy Electrons by Complex Atoms written by Ed R. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total wave function (target plus incident electron) is represented by a close coupling expansion. For complex atoms such as atomaic helium and oxygen, the effects of configuration interaction target states are discussed and analyzed, in part. For atomic helium, the doublet S partial-wave elastic cross section obtained using a He configuration interaction ground state is virtually identical with the corresponding cross section obtained using a Roothaan-Hartree-Fock ground state. In all cases studied, the elastic phase shift is shown to increase with the addition of atomic states and explicit correlation states into the expansion for the total wave function. For atomic oxygen, the quartet P partial-wave elastic phase shift can increase to such an extent as to introduce a 'resonance' behavior into the low-energy part of the elastic cross section. Finally, a second procedure is discussed for including correlation states when CI target states are used in the close-coupling expansion.

Book Theoretical Studies of Electron and Photon Interactions With Atoms and Ions

Download or read book Theoretical Studies of Electron and Photon Interactions With Atoms and Ions written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This grant has contributed to the establishment of a strong group in Theoretical Atomic and Molecular Physics at Clark Atlanta University. The general thrust of the group has been: (l) the development of novel theoretical methods for application to electron scattering at small-scattering angles, propulsion technologies and planetary atmospheres; 2) the calculation, using extensive configuration-interaction wave functions in sophisticated methodologies of energy levels, optical oscillator strengths, effective collision strengths for use in plasma modeling and photoionization cross sections; and 3) the support of minority students who are underrepresented in the physical and mathematical sciences The acquisition through tho AFOSR research grant of the powerful IBM RISC 6OOO/590 workstation and attendant software as well as the support of a Post-doctoral Fellow and students have improved the research environment at the Center for theoretical Studies of Physical Systems (CTSPS) and impacted the training of students in the Atlanta University Center, the largest consortium of private HBCUs in the nation. National and international visitors and collaborators have been attracted to CTSPS, creating an excellent environment for research, thereby advancing the field of small-angle electron scattering to a level that has never been attained before. The project has been very productive. Twenty-five publications have been generated with an additional six publications submitted for publication in refereed journals. Additionally, 31 papers have been presented at national and international conferences over the past three years.

Download or read book Atoms and Light Interactions written by John N. Dodd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1991-04-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the interaction of light with atoms, concentrating on the semiclassical descriptions of the processes. It begins by discussing the classical theory of electromagnetic radiation and its interaction with a classical charged dipole oscillator. Then, in a pivotal chapter, the interaction with a free charge is described (the Compton effect); it is shown that, in order to give agreement with observation, certain quantum rules must be introduced. The book then proceeds to discuss the interaction from this point of view-light always being described classically, atoms described quantum-mechanically, with quantum rules for the interaction. Subsequent chapters deal with stimulated emission and absorption, spontaneous emission and decay, the general problem of light stimulating and being scattered from the two-state atom, the photoelectric effect, and photoelectric counting statistics. Finally the author gives a personal view on the nature of light and his own way of looking at certain paradoxes. The writing of this book was originally conceived as a collaboration between the present author and a colleague of former years, Alan V. Durrant. Indeed, some preliminary exchange of ideas took place in the mid-1970s. But the problems of joint-authorship from antipodean positions proved too difficult and the project was abandoned. I would like to record my indebted ness to him for the stimulation of this early association. I also acknowledge the encouragement of my colleagues at the Univer sity of Otago. Special reference must be made to D. M.

Download or read book Atom Photon Interactions written by Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1998-03-23 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atom-Photon Interactions: Basic Processes and Applications allows the reader to master various aspects of the physics of the interaction between light and matter. It is devoted to the study of the interactions between photons and atoms in atomic and molecular physics, quantum optics, and laser physics. The elementary processes in which photons are emitted, absorbed, scattered, or exchanged between atoms are treated in detail and described using diagrammatic representation. The book presents different theoretical approaches, including: Perturbative methods The resolvent method Use of the master equation The Langevin equation The optical Bloch equations The dressed-atom approach Each method is presented in a self-contained manner so that it may be studied independently. Many applications of these approaches to simple and important physical phenomena are given to illustrate the potential and limitations of each method.

Book Covalent Interaction Effects in Electron Photon Stimulated Desorption

Download or read book Covalent Interaction Effects in Electron Photon Stimulated Desorption written by David E. Ramaker and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent results in electron/photon stimulated desorption (ESD/PSD) from covalent systems are reviewed. This work has utilized Auger and photoelectron data, electron-electron and electron-ion coincidence data, and results from molecular orbital and configuration interaction calculations to provide an increased understanding of the desorption mechanisms in covalent systems. The systems reviewed include Si02, Si3N4, H chemisorbed on Si, Ni, Pd, and W, and gas phase, condensed, and chemisorbed H20 and CO. Comparison of the ion desorption yields obtained from these systems reveals that atom-atom, adsorbate-adsorbate, adsorbate-substrate, and hydrogen bonding interactions can dramatically affect the ion yield. These covalent interactions are seen to increase the alternative decay rates of the excited states which initiate the desorption process.
