Book Effects of a Peer mediated Intervention on Self regulation in Instrumental Music Education

Download or read book Effects of a Peer mediated Intervention on Self regulation in Instrumental Music Education written by John E. Jones (Musician) and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important aspects of learning a musical instrument is the development of Self-Regulated Learning. This study examined a peer-mediated metacognitive management tool designed to scaffold student metacognition, support peer motivation, and calibrate self-efficacy. The subject population included students ages 10-14 (n = 96), who studied a string instrument in the school orchestra. Students completed a pre/post Self-Regulation Questionnaire. They spent nine weeks completing a practice intervention that scaffolded their planning, monitoring, and reflection. Interviews were also conducted to triangulate findings. Results suggested that the intervention decreased self-efficacy in sixth graders compared to fifth graders. There was increased usage of practice behaviors in seventh graders compared to eighth graders. There was increased time management in seventh graders compared to fifth graders and in eighth graders compared to seventh graders. There were also increased social influences in eighth graders compared to fifth graders. These results suggest that a structured peer-mediated intervention may be helpful for students in developing their self-regulation skills. This may be attributable to scaffolding provided by the intervention and motivational factors of peer involvement. This study may further suggest particular grade groups with which to target such interventions.

Book Self Regulation Competence in Music Education

Download or read book Self Regulation Competence in Music Education written by Luca Andrea Ludovico and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work starts from a systematic review about music education and self-regulation during learning processes. Then the paper identifies those meta-cognitive strategies that music students should adopt during their instrumental practice. The goal is applying such concepts in order to rethink the structure of a didactic e-book for instrumental music education. Thanks to the adoption of the IEEE 1599 standard, the paper outlines a model of active e-book able to improve learners' performances through proper cognitive and multi-modal scaffolds. In the last section the design principles for an implementation will be proposed. [For full proceedings, see ED557189.].

Book Impact of Music Instruction on Social Emotional Competence

Download or read book Impact of Music Instruction on Social Emotional Competence written by Rachel Chase (V.) and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In efforts to highlight the important of formal music education for children and adolescents, this study examined the impact music instruction had on the development of social and emotional competencies, as well as its impact on learning and academic achievement. This research suggests that those students who are better socially adjusted and have a heightened awareness and understanding of their emotions, as well as the emotions of others, are likely to be successful in many different areas of their lives. Due to the positive influence formalized music education has on emotions, cognitions, and social skills, it was expected that seventh and eighth grade students who receive instrumental music instruction will have higher levels of social-emotional competence than students who are not receiving formalized music instruction. However, after surveying 7 band students and 27 non-band 7th and 8th grade students from The Middle School, the hypothesis that students who receive regular instruments music instruction would have higher levels of social-emotional competence was not supported.

Book Facilitating student achievement in the instrumental music performance classroom

Download or read book Facilitating student achievement in the instrumental music performance classroom written by Ann Marie Jones and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instrumental music educators often experience that students are unable to self-regulate and be self-reliant musicians at an effective level to foster advanced musical achievement. Self-regulation and reliance are extremely important skills for music students, who must develop their abilities through regular individual practice. Students who are not able to practice effectively on their own often loose motivation and drop music studies. Research in education points toward metacognition development as a possible solution to low student achievement. This project focuses on understanding metacognition and how it can be fostered in music students through the deliberate planning, instructing, and assessments of the instrumental music teacher.

Download or read book Music in Our Lives written by Gary E. McPherson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some children take up music, while others dont? Why do some excel, whilst others give up? Why do some children favour classical music, whilst others prefer rock? These are questions that have puzzled music educators, psychologists, and musicologists for many years. Yet, they are incredibly difficult and complex questions to answer. 'Music in our lives' takes an innovative approach to trying to answer these questions. It is drawn from a research project that spanned fourteen years, and closely followed the lives of over 150 children learning music - from their seventh to their twenty second birthdays. This detailed longitudinal approach helped the authors probe a number of important issues. For example, how do you define musical skill and ability? Is it true, as many assume, that continuous engagement in performance is the sole way in which those skills can be developed? What are the consequences of trends and behaviours observed amongst the general public, and their listening consumption. After presenting an overview and detailed case study explorations of musical lives, the book provides frameworks and theory for further investigation and discussion. It tries to present an holistic interpretation of these studies, and looks at their implications for musical development and education. Accessibly written by three leading researchers in the fields of music education and music psychology, this book makes a powerful contribution to understanding the dynamic and vital context of music in our lives.

In recognition of this impetus, The Handbook of Behavior Change provides comprehensive coverage of contemporary theory, research, and practice on behavior change. It summarizes current evidence-based approaches to behavior change in chapters authored by leading theorists, researchers, and practitioners from multiple disciplines, including psychology, sociology, behavioral science, economics, philosophy, and implementation science. It is the go-to resource for researchers, students, practitioners, and policy makers looking for current knowledge on behavior change and guidance on how to develop effective interventions to change behavior.
