Book The Chief Diversity Officer

Download or read book The Chief Diversity Officer written by Damon A. Williams and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the role of chief diversity officers as coordinating and integrating diversity leaders in higher education and other sectors.Having established in a companion volume the parameters for an effective diversity strategy, the authors address such questions as: What is a chief diversity officer? How might we create dynamic chief diversity officer infrastructures? What models of CDO structure exist in the academy? What misperceptions often confound the work of officers and the institutions they work within? What key competencies are necessary to lead as a CDO? How does the CDO role compare across higher education, non-profit, and corporate sectors? And how might the role serve as an important contributor to a collaborative vision for change and transformation in the academy? This book begins by delineating the evolution of the chief diversity officer role in the academy. Drawing on extensive qualitative and quantitative research on CDOs conducted for the purposes of this volume, it describes how the scope and responsibilities are variously defined at the organizations where the position has been created, and offers insights into the complexities and challenges of the role.On the basis of this data and the literature on organizational design and change management, the authors define the requisite skills, knowledge and background to be effective, review the alternative organizational and governance structures under which CDOs operate, and in so doing present the Chief Diversity Officer Development Framework as a basis for recruiting candidates, for structuring the position to succeed, and for providing prospective and incumbent CDOs with a realistic sense of the scope of the role. This title is also available in a set with its companion volume, Strategic Diversity Leadership.

Book Recruiting Retaining and Engaging African American Males at Selective Public Research Universities

Download or read book Recruiting Retaining and Engaging African American Males at Selective Public Research Universities written by Louis A. Castenel and published by IAP. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A problematic, yet uncommon, assumption among many higher education researchers is that recruitment, retention, and engagement of African-American males is relatively similar and stable across all majority White colleges and universities. In fact, the harsh reality is that selective public research universities (SPRUs) have distinctive academic cultures that increase the difficulty of diversifying their faculty and student populations. This book will discuss how traditions and elitist assumptions make it very difficult to recruit, retain, and engage African-American males. The authors will examine these issues from multiple perspectives in three sections that highlight research, policies and practices impacting the experiences of African American males, including Pre-Collegiate Preparation, African American Male Student Athletes, and Undergraduate and Graduate Considerations for African American Male Initiatives.

Book Pursuing Diversity

Download or read book Pursuing Diversity written by Barbara Astone and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 1990 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Projections show steady growth in the minority populations of the United States, but entry rates of minorities into postsecondary education are shrinking. Institutions of higher education are now being called upon to exercise leadership in addressing the problem of minority education before it reaches critical proportions. This report examines the recruitment of minority students into postsecondary education. The report discusses (1) what the institution's role is in pursuing diversity through recruitment; (2) how minority students are distinct from each other and from the majority; (3) how the recruitment of minority students is related to other institutional concerns; and (4) whose responsiblity it is to recruit minority students, when it should be done, where it should be done, and how. Also provided are: a historical background of minority recruitment practice; a discussion of what information colleges should be aware of concerning the demographics and diversity of minority populations; a review of a recruitment plan; and summaries, conclusions, and recommendations for further research. Contain 193 references and an index. (GLR).

Book Transforming Trajectories for Women of Color in Tech

Download or read book Transforming Trajectories for Women of Color in Tech written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by . This book was released on 2022-09-09 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demand for tech professionals is expected to increase substantially over the next decade, and increasing the number of women of color in tech will be critical to building and maintaining a competitive workforce. Despite years of efforts to increase the diversity of the tech workforce, women of color have remained underrepresented, and the numbers of some groups of women of color have even declined. Even in cases where some groups of women of color may have higher levels of representation, data show that they still face significant systemic challenges in advancing to positions of leadership. Research evidence suggests that structural and social barriers in tech education, the tech workforce, and in venture capital investment disproportionately and negatively affect women of color. Transforming Trajectories for Women of Color in Tech uses current research as well as information obtained through four public information-gathering workshops to provide recommendations to a broad set of stakeholders within the tech ecosystem for increasing recruitment, retention, and advancement of women of color. This report identifies gaps in existing research that obscure the nature of challenges faced by women of color in tech, addresses systemic issues that negatively affect outcomes for women of color in tech, and provides guidance for transforming existing systems and implementing evidence-based policies and practices to increase the success of women of color in tech.

Book Minority Student Retention

Download or read book Minority Student Retention written by Alan Seidman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student retention continues to be a vexing problem for all colleges and universities. In spite of the money spent on creating programs and services to help retain students until they achieve their academic and personal goals, and graduate, the figures have not improved over time. This is particularly true for minority students, who have a greater attrition rate than majority students. Demographic information shows that the minority population in the United States is growing at a faster rate than the majority. It is imperative that educational institutions find ways to help improve retention rates for all students but particularly minority students. Retention rates should not differ appreciably among different racial/ethnic groups."The Journal of College Student Retention: Research, Theory and Practice" is the only scholarly, peer-reviewed journal devoted solely to college student retention. It has published many articles on minority student retention, and this topic continues to garner much attention. This book is a compilation of the very best of these articles, selected on the basis of reviews by a cadre of experts in the education field. The articles discuss African American, Latino/Latina, Asian and Asian Pacific, Native American, and biracial students, and institutional commitments to retaining a diverse student population. For those interested in this vital area, the collection will teach and inspire them to achieve greater heights and pay additional attention to retaining minority students in our colleges and universities.
