Some motivating factors for this capstone was the desire to improve nonfiction reading comprehension and prepare third graders for a world of nonfiction reading. This capstone details a variety of nonfiction reading strategies recommended by many experts such as Hoyt. The strategies were implemented in a third grade classroom over a three week period. Through my research, I have been able to determine that nonfiction reading strategies are important to teach to third grade students. I will continue to strive to improve reading comprehension for my students. My research findings have positive implications for all educators wanting to improve students' reading comprehension.

Book excerpt: This study addressed the need to teach parents of struggling second grade readers effective strategies to help their children improve their nonfiction reading comprehension. This case study examined the changes in nonfiction reading strategy implementation of three parent-child dyads as a result of the parents watching instructional videos and receiving feedback on their application of the reading strategies. Video submissions of parent-child reading sessions were reviewed and analyzed qualitatively using the constant comparative method of data analysis. Emergent coding was used to categorize the data and determine themes. The results of this study demonstrate that a classroom teacher can use online instructional videos with parents that include an explanation and a demonstration of reading strategies to make positive changes in the nonfiction reading comprehension practices of second grade struggling readers. The data suggest that most parents can learn to implement many nonfiction reading strategies by simply watching instructional videos. Parents can also learn additional strategies when given meaningful feedback on their attempts to implement the reading strategies. Some strategies, however, were difficult for parents to learn even with instructional videos and feedback. The results of this study suggest that teachers can utilize well-designed online instructional videos to provide support to parents of struggling readers. This approach is a cost-effective means of disseminating powerful information about reading strategies to parents. It also allows parents, particularly those with scheduling challenges, to receive support from the school at their convenience.
