Book Fabrication of Heat Resistant and Plastic Formable Silicon Nitride

Download or read book Fabrication of Heat Resistant and Plastic Formable Silicon Nitride written by Toshiyuki Nishimura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, improvements in the heat resistance of silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramics using grain boundary control and in plasticity at high temperatures using grain size control in order to reduce the cost of shaping Si3N4 are described. The heat resistance of Si3N4 is improved by mixing a slight amount of sintering additive as an impurity into the original material powder. The author presents his findings on the high heat resistance of Si3N4. The author also develops a new fabrication method for Si3N4 nano-ceramics that produces high plastic formability. The method developed offers two improved points in grinding and sintering processes. The author found that the plastic formability of Si3N4 nanoceramics is dependent on load stress; the results of his research are detailed in this book.

Book The Development of the Mechanical Strength of Reaction Bonded Silicon Nitride

Download or read book The Development of the Mechanical Strength of Reaction Bonded Silicon Nitride written by A. J. Moulson and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes research aimed at furthering understanding of the nature and mechanism of development of the bond in RBSN. The project formed a part of an overall programme aimed at securing control of the microstructure of RBSN and, in consequence, over the mechanical properties of the ceramic. The study embraced three grades of starting silicon powder: a specially prepared high purity powder (99.99% Si), a similar powder contaminated with Fe (approx. 10 ppm Fe), and a commercial powder (approx. 98% Si; 0.5% Fe; 1.5% AL). Sonic Young's modulus was determined at stages throughout the nitriding reaction for all three powders and the data correlated with microstructural observations. In the case of the high-purity silicon powder it was concluded that the bond forms as a result of the deposition of massive, vapour-formed, Si3N4, and that Si3N4 'whisker' formation played no part in the bonding process. It was also observed that RBSN made from the two higher purity powders had Young's modulus values significantly higher than commonly encountered. A 3-phase composite model developed by Cohen and Ishai satisfactorily described the rate of development of Young's modulus with extent of reaction. (Author).

Book Ceramic Matrix Composites

Download or read book Ceramic Matrix Composites written by I M Low and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-25 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of engineering-designed polymer matrix composites in the late 1940s has provided an impetus for the emergence of sophisticated ceramic matrix composites. The development of CMCs is a promising means of achieving lightweight, structural materials combining high temperature strength with improved fracture toughness, damage tolerance and thermal shock resistance. Considerable research effort is being expended in the optimisation of ceramic matrix composite systems, with particular emphasis being placed on the establishment of reliable and cost-effective fabrication procedures. Ceramic matrix composites consists of a collection of chapters reviewing and describing the latest advances, challenges and future trends in the microstructure and property relationship of five areas of CMCs. Part one focuses on fibre, whisker and particulate-reinforced ceramic matrix composites, part two explores graded and layered ceramics, while the five chapters in part three cover nanostructured CMCs in some detail. Refractory and speciality ceramic composites are looked at in part four, with chapters on magnesia-spinel composite refractory materials, thermal shock of CMCs and superplastic CMCs. Finally, part four is dedicated to non-oxide ceramic composites. Ceramic matrix composites is a comprehensive evaluation of all aspects of the interdependence of processing, microstructure, properties and performance of each of the five categories of CMC, with chapters from experienced and established researchers. It will be essential for researchers and engineers in the field of ceramics and more widely, in the field of inorganic materials. Looks at the latest advances, challenges and future trends Compiled by experienced and established researchers in the field Essential for researchers and engineers

Book Mechanical Properties of Porous High Temperature Structural Materials Sources of Toughness in Reaction Bonded Silicon Nitride

Download or read book Mechanical Properties of Porous High Temperature Structural Materials Sources of Toughness in Reaction Bonded Silicon Nitride written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reaction bonded silicon nitride (RBSN) prepared from submicron size pure silicon powder is a micro-porous ceramic with excellent mechanical and dielectric properties for high temperature structural applications and for radomes. In this research program the mechanical properties including elastic moduli, tensile strength and fracture toughness of RBSN was experimentally studied in connection with its quasi-regular microstructure. The further ranges of microstructural features and the processes related to local fracture resistance were studied by means of two relate and quite flexible computer simulations of the reaction kinetics controlling the microstructure and the processes that control the crack paths. These results are summarized and presented in greater detail in four appended manuscripts. jg p1.

Book Effect of Composition on the Processing and Properties of Sintered Reaction bonded Silicon Nitride

Download or read book Effect of Composition on the Processing and Properties of Sintered Reaction bonded Silicon Nitride written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The type of silicon powder and sintering additive were found to influence the processing and final mechanical properties of sintered reaction bonded silicon nitride. High purity silicon powders produced low [alpha]-Si3N4 content during nitridation. The Si powder type had no apparent effect on densification. More complete nitridation and higher room temperature mechanical properties were observed for the Si powders with higher Fe contents. However, the higher Fe contents resulted in greater high temperature strength degradation and so there was better high temperature strength retention with the higher purity Si. High [alpha]-Si3N4 contents were found after nitridation with [alpha]-Si3N4 seeded materials and with MgO-Y2O3 as the sintering additive. Densification was inhibited by refractory additives, such as Y2O3-SiO2. The highest room temperature strength and fracture toughness values correlated to high nitrided [alpha]-Si3N4 contents. The high temperature strength behavior was similar for all additive types.

Book Metals and Materials

Download or read book Metals and Materials written by R. E. Smallman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metals and Materials: Science, Processes, Applications aims to present the science of materials in a readable and concise form that leads naturally to an explanation of the ways in which materials are processed and applied. The science of metals, or physical metallurgy, has developed naturally into the wider and more diverse discipline of materials science. The study of metals and alloys still forms a large and important part of this relatively new discipline, but it’s common to find that fundamental principles and concepts of physical metallurgy can be adapted to explain the behavior of a variety of non-metallic materials. As an aid to fully study this discipline, each chapter has been supplemented with a list of specialized references. These references include images and diagrams that illustrate the subtleties of materials, such as micrographs of grain structures and fine-scale defects, phase diagrams for metals and ceramics, electron diffraction patterns revealing atomic arrangements, specific property diagrams correlating the behavior of different materials, and slip vector diagrams for deforming crystals. Throughout this book, sufficient background and theory is provided to assist students in answering questions about a large part of a typical degree course in materials science and engineering. Some sections provide a background or point of entry for postgraduate studies and courses.
