This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The X. European Symposium on Calcified Tissues took place in Hamburg from 16th to 21 st September 1973. The financial backing came from the Gesund heitsbehorde der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg (President Dr. Zylmann), the Bundesministerium fur Jugend, Familie und Gesundheit, and from industry. This made it possible to carry out the scientific program, to invite several European and non-European scientists, and to organize a social program designed to establish personal contact between delegates and to make visitors acquainted with our country. In the name of the organizing committee, we herewith express our warmest appreciation of all the help given to us. Professor Bartelheimer, as the representative of the Medical Faculty and on behalf of the President of the University of Hamburg, welcomed the Parti cipants in the symposium to our city. The history of these meetings began in Oxford in 1963, with the First European Bone and Tooth Symposium, organized by H. J. J. Blackwood, B. E. C. Nordin, and Dame Janet Vaughan. The idea was to found in Europe an institution simi lar to the American Gordon Research Conferences of Bone and Tooth. After the U. K. , the host countries were Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, Italy, Israel and Austria. The second symposium in Liege already bore the present name.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Osteoporosis is a global threat because it can impact every human being as they age. In this new edition, the authors point out the enormous scale of the problem in terms of human suffering, morbidity and mortality on the one hand, and the astronomical national costs on the other. Written in an easy-to-read style, this book updates physicians on the current knowledge about bone structure, physiology and pathology, with an emphasis on the diagnosis, therapy and prevention of osteoporosis. Its purpose is to educate members of the medical profession about this widespread and potentially disabling disease, while providing information on related current evidence-based medicine. The book covers everything from basic physiology to osteoporosis diagnosis, including utility of specialized tests and current treatment recommendations, and will provide the primary care physician with sound medical knowledge in the prevention and management of osteoporosis. It is up-beat and optimistic, with a touch of humor; it is scientifically based but provides easy-to-follow guidelines for lifelong maintenance of skeletal structure and function. Osteoporosis is preventable if doctors want it to be, and every doctor can contribute. Bone is every doctor's and every body's business.

We have attempted to morganize this from a more physiological point of view, and to highlight systems, and the nutrients that support them, rather than the other way around. We hope we have captured in this book the state of the field of study of the role of human nutrition in space flight, along with the work leading up to this state, and some guideposts for work remaining to be done and gaps that need to be filled. Book Skeletal Tissue Mechanics

Download or read book Skeletal Tissue Mechanics written by R. Bruce Martin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-29 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook describes the biomechanics of bone, cartilage, tendons and ligaments. It is rigorous in its approach to the mechanical properties of the skeleton yet it does not neglect the biological properties of skeletal tissue or require mathematics beyond calculus. Time is taken to introduce basic mechanical and biological concepts, and the approaches used for some of the engineering analyses are purposefully limited. The book is an effective bridge between engineering, veterinary, biological and medical disciplines and will be welcomed by students and researchers in biomechanics, orthopedics, physical anthropology, zoology and veterinary science. This book also: Maximizes reader insights into the mechanical properties of bone, fatigue and fracture resistance of bone and mechanical adaptability of the skeleton Illustrates synovial joint mechanics and mechanical properties of ligaments and tendons in an easy-to-understand way Provides exercises at the end of each chapter

Book Scientific Basis for Ayurvedic Therapies

Download or read book Scientific Basis for Ayurvedic Therapies written by Lakshmi C. Mishra and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-29 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguably the oldest form of health care, Ayurveda is often referred to as the "Mother of All Healing." Although there has been considerable scientific research done in this area during the last 50 years, the results of that research have not been adequately disseminated. Meeting the need for an authoritative, evidence-based reference, Scientific Basis for Ayurvedic Therapies is the first book to analyze and synthesize current research supporting Ayurvedic medicine. This book reviews the latest scientific information, evaluates the research data, and presents it in an easy to use format. The editor has carefully selected topics based on the availability of scientific studies and the prevalence of a disease. With contributions from experts in their respective fields, topics include Ayurvedic disease management, panchkarma, Ayurvedic bhasmas, the current status of Ayurveda in India, clinical research design, and evaluation of typical clinical trials of certain diseases, to name just a few. While there are many books devoted to Ayurveda, very few have any in-depth basis in scientific studies. This book provides a critical evaluation of literature, clinical trials, and biochemical and pharmacological studies on major Ayurvedic therapies that demonstrates how they are supported by scientific data. Providing a natural bridge from Ayurveda to Western medicine, Scientific Basis for Ayurvedic Therapies facilitates the integration of these therapies by health care providers.
