Book Effect of Reacting Surface Density on the Overall Graphite Oxidation Rate

Download or read book Effect of Reacting Surface Density on the Overall Graphite Oxidation Rate written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graphite oxidation in an air-ingress accident is presently a very important issue for the reactor safety of the very high temperature gas cooled-reactor (VHTR), the concept of the next generation nuclear plant (NGNP) because of its potential problems such as mechanical degradation of the supporting graphite in the lower plenum of the VHTR might lead to core collapse if the countermeasure is taken carefully. The oxidation process of graphite has known to be affected by various factors, including temperature, pressure, oxygen concentration, types of graphite, graphite shape and size, flow distribution, etc. However, our recent study reveals that the internal pore characteristics play very important roles in the overall graphite oxidation rate. One of the main issues regarding graphite oxidation is the potential core collapse problem that may occur following the degradation of graphite mechanical strength. In analyzing this phenomenon, it is very important to understand the relationship between the degree of oxidization and strength degradation. In addition, the change of oxidation rate by graphite oxidation degree characterization by burn-off (ratio of the oxidized graphite density to the original density) should be quantified because graphite strength degradation is followed by graphite density decrease, which highly affects oxidation rates and patterns. Because the density change is proportional to the internal pore surface area, they should be quantified in advance. In order to understand the above issues, the following experiments were performed: (1)Experiment on the fracture of the oxidized graphite and validation of the previous correlations, (2) Experiment on the change of oxidation rate using graphite density and data collection, (3) Measure the BET surface area of the graphite. The experiments were performed using H451 (Great Lakes Carbon Corporation) and IG-110 (Toyo Tanso Co., Ltd) graphite. The reason for the use of those graphite materials is because their chemical and mechanical characteristics are well identified by the previous investigations, and therefore it was convenient for us to access the published data, and to apply and validate our new methodologies. This paper presents preliminary results of compressive strength vs. burn-off and surface area density vs. burn-off, which can be used for the nuclear graphite selection for the NGNP.

Book Surface Area Effects on the Oxidation Kinetics of Pyrolytic Graphite

Download or read book Surface Area Effects on the Oxidation Kinetics of Pyrolytic Graphite written by Milton Levy and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oxidation kinetics of pyrolytic graphite was studied as a function of temperature, air velocity, and surface area. The transition temperature between chemical and diffusion control may be significantly increased or decreased by decreasing or increasing the surface area of pyrolytic graphite. Kinetic theory calculations showed that the maximum reaction rate in the diffusion-controlled region is 50,000 times the observed rate for specimens having the smallest surface area. (Author).

Book excerpt: Proceedings of the Fourth Conference on Carbon is a collection of manuscripts presented at the Fourth Conference on Carbon, held at the University of Buffalo on June 15-19, 1959, jointly sponsored by the American Carbon Committee and the University of Buffalo. The contributors explore the manufacture, properties, and use of carbonaceous materials. This book is organized into five parts encompassing 79 chapters. Parts I and II describe the surface and electronic properties, adsorption, and reactivity of carbonaceous materials, including carbon black, activated carbon, coal, and graphite. These parts also cover reactions such as thermal oxidation, gasification, and catalysis. Part III highlights the processes of carbonization, graphitization, and crystallite growth of carbon, while Part IV examines their mechanical and thermal properties. Part V looks into the raw materials used for the manufacture of certain carbon materials and the influence of several properties, including porosity and density. Organic chemists and carbon scientists and researchers will find this book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on the lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute: (ASI) «Pollutants Formation from Combustion. Formation Mechanisms and Impact on th th Atmospheric Chemistry» held in Maratea, Italy, from 13 to 26 september 1998. Preservation of the environment is of increasing concern in individual countries but also at continental or world scales. The structure of a NATO ASI which involve lecturers and participants of different nationalities was thought as especially well suited to address environmental issues. As combustion is known to substantially contribute to the damaging of the atmosphere, it was natural to concentrate the ASI program on reviewing the currently available knowledge of the formation mechanisms of the main pollutants liberated by combustion systems. In most situations, pollutants are present as trace components and their formation and removal is strongly conditioned by the chemical reactions initiated by fuel consumption. Therefore specific lectures were aimed at defining precisely the general properties of combustion chemistry for gaseous, liquid and solid fuels. Physical factors can strongly affect the combustion chemistry and their influence was also considered. An interesting peculiarity of this specific ASI was to complement the program with a substantial part concerned with the impact of the main combustion pollutants: NOx, aromatics, soot, VOCs, sulphur and chlorinated compounds, on atmospheric chemistry.
