This book was released on 2018 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the present investigation involves studying the microstructure and mechanical properties of duplex stainless steel (DSS) alloy 2205 and super DSS (SDSS) alloy 2507 weld joints fabricated by tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding and its variant, activated TIG (A-TIG) welding. Square butt weld joints were fabricated from 10-mm-thick plates of DSS and SDSS using single pass A-TIG and multi-pass TIG welding processes. The filler wire ER2209 was used for multi-pass TIG welding of DSS 2205, and ER2594 filler wire was used for multi-pass TIG welding of SDSS 2507. The microstructure in the A-TIG weld metals was found to be coarser, which was caused by high peak temperatures during A-TIG welding. The microstructures exhibited different forms of austenite, including grain boundary allotriomorphs, Widmansttten side plates, and intragranular precipitates in the weld metal. In the A-TIG weld metals, the microstructure exhibited a balanced ferrite-to-austenite ratio. The hardness values of multi-pass TIG weld joints were higher compared to A-TIG weld joints. The tensile and yield strengths of multi-pass TIG weld joints were higher compared to A-TIG weld joints, which was mainly due to higher delta ferrite content and finer microstructure. The toughness values obtained by Charpy impact testing were higher in A-TIG weld joints compared with multi-pass TIG weld joints at room temperature, which was mainly due to the balanced ferrite-to-austenite ratio in the weld microstructure. However, at subzero temperatures, the A-TIG weld joints exhibit lower impact toughness because of their coarser weld metal structure.

Book Effect of Material and GMAW Process Conditions on AHSS Welds

Download or read book Effect of Material and GMAW Process Conditions on AHSS Welds written by Ryan Nicholas Kapustka and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The drive to reduce vehicle weight while improving crash performance has led automotive and heavy equipment manufacturers to introduce new materials with greater strength-to-weight ratios. Advanced high strength Steel (AHSS) is a family of several types of steels which derive their strengths from various combinations of chemistry and mechanical processing. Fundamental work is needed to understand how material and process conditions affect the properties of Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welded joints in these materials. The objective of this work was to characterize the effects of material pre-strain, cooling-rate (welding heat-input and fixture heat-sinking), filler-metal selection, dilution, and post-baking on the microstructure and mechanical properties of GMA -- welded DP and TRIP sheet-metal lap-joints and butt-joints. Four steels were studied: coated DP780, DP980, TRIP600, and TRIP78O of thicknesses ranging from 1.34 to 1.54mm. Heat- affected zone (HAZ) and fusion-zone (FZ) hardness profiles and microstructures were characterized for lap-joint fillet welds. Static and dynamic tensile properties of DP780 and TRIP78O butt and lap-joints were evaluated and related to the microstructral observations. The peak HAZ hardness and the degree of HAZ softening were related to the grade of the material. No softening was observed in the TRIP600 welds, which was attributed to the higher silicon content of this material retarding the rate of carbide tempering during the weld thermal-cycle. The relatively high aluminum content of the TRIP78O allowed retained ferrite to be present in all regions of the HAZ, along with a continuous region of coarse ferrite along the weld fusion line. This resulted in the TRJP78O having a lower peak HAZ hardness than the DP780. The DP980 had the greatest peak HAZ hardness and the highest degree of HAZ softening, which was attributed to its higher hardenability and martensite content. The minimum HAZ hardness of welds produced on the pre-strained materials remained greater than that of the as-received base material. Regardless of the presence of pre-strain, post-baking did not have an effect on HAZ hardness. The FZ microstructure and corresponding hardness was found to be largely influenced by dilution and the aluminum or silicon content of the base material. The high aluminum content of TRIP78O promoted the formation of harder constituents in the weld metal, whereas, the high silicon content of TRTP600 promoted the formation of a softer ferritic microstructure. All of the TRIP78O and DP780 butt-joints failed in the softened region of the HAZ during the static and dynamic tensile tests. For the static butt-joints, joint efficiencies were in the range of 87 -- 94%, while elongation recovery values ranged from 67-- 80%. The dynamic butt-joints had peak loads in the range of 122.5 -- 130 KSI, and strains at peak load ranged from 2.25 -- 3.85%. Similar values were obtained for the TRIP78O lap-joints without porosity along the root of the weld. However, when porosity was present along the weld root, static and dynamic tensile properties were dramatically lower due to failure in the continuous ferrite region along the TRIP78O weld fusion line. Filler metal strength did not affect the static and dynamic tensile properties of either the butt or lap-joints. Additional work is recommended to extend the results of this study for the optimization of GMAW procedures for particular applications.
