Book excerpt: Bilingual research has found evidence of a bilingual advantage on some tests involving executive functioning. In this study, twenty-one English monolingual subjects and thirty English-Spanish bilingual subjects were compared on the Trail Making Test Parts A and Band the Stroop Color and Word Test. The bilingual subjects were expected to outperform the monolingual subjects on these measures of executive function after being matched on demographic variables. The relationship between acculturation and bilingual language proficiency was also examined, which was expected to predict superior performance on cognitive measures. The test groups were matched in age, but they were significantly different with regard to years of education, nonverbal intelligence, and gender. Contrary to what was expected, the bilingual subjects evidenced a longer period of time to complete the Trail Making Test Part B than monolingual subjects. There is evidence that working memory capacity interacts with linguistic ability, which may delay switching responses. Both linguistic groups performed similarly on the Stroop, which undermine general claims about the better-developed processes subserving inhibition control in bilingual subjects. In this particular sample, level of acculturation did not relate to level of language proficiency. Further exploration of this hypothesis was precluded due to the small sample size and the homogeneity of the bilingual sample. However, it can be concluded that qualitative differences in experiences within Hispanic-bilingual groups must be accounted for in order to adequately explain cognitive test performance. Suggestions for further research are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Rationale : The cognitive science literature suggests both advantages and disadvantages of bilingualism for cognitive performance. However, little is known about the generalizability of such findings to clinical neuropsychology for diagnosing brain dysfunction in Spanish dominant bilinguals in the U.S. The present study examined the effects of bilingualism on Spanish-language neuropsychological test performance, and whether or not these bilingual advantages could be explained by socioeconomic status (SES). Design : Forty seven Spanish monolinguals and 42 Spanish-English bilinguals from the U.S. - Mexico border region were selected based on a ratio of English words to total words produced on a verbal fluency task in both language. Effects of bilingualism on neuropsychological test performance were examined as means comparisons between groups with comparable education, age, and sex. SES contributions were examined by comparing the performance of 28 bilingual and 28 monolingual participants with comparable demographic characteristics, and self-reported SES on tests where bilingual advantages were previously found. Results : Controlling for education, bilinguals out-performed monolinguals on a test of executive function, and some tests of attention/working memory, and processing speed, with an unexpected advantage on a test of visual memory. No differences were found on tests of language abilities, learning, visuospatial, or motor skills. Bilinguals had higher childhood SES than monolinguals. After equating groups on childhood SES, bilinguals still outperformed monolinguals on tests of executive functioning (Trail Making Test B and Stroop Color-Word Interference Condition), a measure of attention and concentration (WAIS-R Digit Span), and a measure of processing speed (WAIS-III-Symbol Search). Conclusion : These findings suggest that bilingual advantages observed in the cognitive science literature are seen on some neuropsychological tests that are commonly used in clinical settings, suggesting that learning a second language improves performance in a person's native language. These results suggest that bilingualism likely confers a true neuropsychological advantage beyond what can be explained by SES and education differences. This needs to be considered when interpreting test performance, adding complexity to the generation and application of test norms in bilingual groups.

Book excerpt: Performance validity tests (PVTs) are used alongside neuropsychological assessments to help detect suspect effort. One of the most widely used PVTs, the Reliable Digit Span (RDS), and its latest version, the RDS-revised (RDS-R), have been widely accepted as valid and reliable within the general population. However, as the United States becomes increasingly globalized, questions arise regarding the validity of language-based tests such as the RDS and RDS-R amongst English-Spanish bilingual populations. This study used a within-subject design with 28 bilingual undergraduate students, testing them on the Digit Span (the test that RDS results are based on) in both English and Spanish to determine whether one’s language proficiency impacted failure rates in one language versus another. Results demonstrated significant differences in overall syllable load for each language, indicating that the test is more cognitively challenging in Spanish than in English. Despite significant differences in performance on the RDS and RDS-R based on the language of administration, these differences were insufficient to result in significant discrepancies in classification. However, a nonsignificant trend suggested that a similar analysis conducted with a larger sample might produce significant differences in classification rates. Acculturation did not factor into PVT performance. The results provide initial support for the use of the measure in either English or Spanish. However, before results are generalized, future research can consider replication of cutoff norms for bilinguals using larger and broader samples and more specific differences amongst varying bilingual populations.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Psychology - General, grade: 2.1, University of East London, course: BSc Psychology, language: English, abstract: 20 monolingual (Polish) and 20 bilingual (Polish- English) speakers were employed to this study in attempt to establish a set of performance norms for a neuropsychological test battery. Participants were administered a number of cognitive test that resulted in no consistent differences between above language groups. Despite a small sample size, the data obtained could be considered a useful tool for clinicians working with Polish speakers. The second objective was to determine the effect of bilingualism on Verbal Fluency tasks. It was hypothesized that Polish bilinguals would obtain lower scores than Polish monolinguals on above tasks. The groups comprised 40 participants who took part in the first part of the study. They completed 2 letter, 2 semantic and 1 category switching tasks. The analysis of collected data supported the main prediction that there is significant difference between the numbers of words produced by language groups. However the interaction did not reach significance. Further studies are needed in order to facilitate recent findings.

Book excerpt: Bilingual children of the same age may have different narrative skills depending on the quantity and quality of their experiences in the two languages. Thus, children's storytelling skills can vary depending on children's oral proficiency in each language. The present study examined the effects of oral proficiency on story structure in forty 5- to 7-year-old Spanish-English speaking children using Spanish and English samples from story retelling tasks. Language proficiency was measured as continuum of performance using the Spanish-English Language Proficiency Scale (SELPS). To estimate the effects of Spanish and English proficiency on story structure, linear regressions were conducted across the two languages on five dependent variables: total number of elements, number of complete episodes, initiating events, actions, and outcomes. In Spanish, results indicated that language proficiency accounted for the variability in all story structure measures except initiating events and actions. In English, language proficiency accounted for the variability in all dependent variables except story outcomes. Findings indicate language proficiency effects on story structure when working with bilingual children. Therefore, story structure scores should be interpreted with caution, taking into account children's proficiency level in each language.
