This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effect of Heat Treatment on the Mechanical Properties of 1 Per Cent Carbon Steel From the preceding results it appears that slow cooling from temperatures just above Ac, l gives maximum ductility and low strength. With rise in annealing temperature the ductility de creases rapidly, and elongation and reduction of area in general remain at low values, while the strength reaches a maximum 1n the range about 900°c (1652° F). Book excerpt: In 1901 the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) was founded to provide standard weights and measures and to be the national physical laboratory for the United States of America. The NBS conducted a lot of research in the fields of science and technology which were reported as "Technological Papers." In 1988 the NBS became what we know now; the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This is one of those documents written by employees of the NBS.

Book The Effect of Different Heat Treatments on the Mechanical Properties of Steel Varying in Carbon Content

This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Effect of Different Heat Treatments on the Mechanical Properties of Steel Varying in Carbon Content: A Thesis When the steel is raised to the annealing temperature it should be held at this temperature long enough to assure a uniform heating of the piece throughout. The A. S. T. M. Recommends an exposure of one hour for pieces twelve inches thick. Larger pieces require a longer exposure. Book Heat Treatment of Steel

Download or read book Heat Treatment of Steel written by Harold Ralph Badger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heat Treatment of Steel: Hardening, Tempering, Case-Hardening In general, any change in the composition of a steel results in some change in its properties. For example, the addition of certain metallic elements to a carbon steel causes, in the alloy steel thus formed, a change in position of the proper hardening temperature point. Tungsten or manganese tend to lower this point, boron and vanadium to raise it; the amount of the change is practically proportional to the amount of the element added. Just as a small proportion of carbon added to iron produces steel which has decidedly different-properties than those found in pure iron, so increasing the proportion of carbon in the steel thus formed, within certain limits, causes a variation in the degree in which these properties manifest themselves. For example, consider the property of tensile strength. In a ten-point carbon steel (one in which there is present but per cent of, carbon) the tensile strength is very nearly 25 per cent greater than that of pure iron. Adding more carbon causes the tensile strength to rise, approximately, at the rate of per cent for each per cent of carbon added. Carbon steels are divided into three classes according to the propor tion of carbon which they contain. The first of these embraces the unsaturated' steels, in which the carbon content is lower than per cent; the second, the saturated steels, in which the proportion of carbon is exactly per cent; and, the third, the supersaturated steels, in which the carbon content is higher than per cent. Book Thermal and Physical Changes Accompanying the Heating of Hardened Carbon Steels Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thermal and Physical Changes Accompanying the Heating of Hardened Carbon Steels The materials studied were seven steels Of the compositions given in Table 1. Heating for quenching, as noted on the curves and in the tabulated results, was carried out on the prepared. Samples by introduction into an electrically heated alundum-tube furnace wound with resistance wire. Charcoal was present to reduce oxi dation, and a platinum, platinum-rhodium thermocouple was used for the measurement of temperature. In tempering, the specimen was heated 30 minutes in an oil or nitrate bath, as required by the temperature. Temperatures below 300° C were measured with a mercury thermometer. All samples of the quenched 0. 9 5 per cent C steel not receiving sub sequent tempering were run within from I to 3 days after quenching. All the other steels not tempered were run within from 6 to 16 days after. Treatment, excepting the I. OI per cent C and I 94 per cent C steels (curve which were run the day follow ing treatment.
