Book excerpt: The book introduces readers with theory and empirical findings related to uncivil behaviour in academic settings and discusses its precursors, implications and remedies. In the first part, we define academic incivility, its manifestations and dimensions, while distinguishing between academic incivility and workplace incivility. We then discuss the prevalence of faculty incivility (FI) and students’ incivility (SI) in academic settings and focus on the dyadic relationships between faculty and students in the broader context of incivility in academia, with an added focus on faculty incivility. The second part introduces the main contributors to academic incivility. Personal factors, in this case, social-emotional competencies, and contextual factors, in this case, learning environments, are explored by combining up-to-date research data, personal stories and interviews with lecturers and students. A deep understanding of the precursors of academic incivility is critical to the examination of possible coping strategies within academic settings and elsewhere. In the third part, we explore the potential and practical remedies that can mitigate incivility in academic settings and, in particular, the enhancement of emotional and social competencies and the modification of learning environments.

The concept of emotional labor was first proposed by Dr. Arlie Russell Hochschild (1983), who defined it as "the management of feeling to create a publicly observable facial and bodily display" (p. 7) for a wage. A basic assumption of emotional labor theory is that many jobs (e.g., customer service, healthcare, team-based work, management) have interpersonal, and thus emotional, requirements and that well-being and effectiveness in these jobs is determined, in part, by a person’s ability to meet these requirements. Since Hochschild’s initial work, psychologists, sociologists, and management scholars have developed distinct theoretical approaches aimed at expanding and elaborating upon Hochschild’s core ideas. Broadly speaking, emotional labor is the study of how emotion regulation of oneself and others influences social dynamics at work, which has implications for performance and well being in a wide range of occupations and organizational contexts. This book offers researchers and practitioners a review of emotional labor theory and research that integrates the various perspectives into a coherent framework, and proposes an agenda for future research on this increasingly relevant and important topic. The book is divided into 5 main sections, with the first section introducing and defining emotional labor as well as creating a framework for the rest of the book to follow. The second section consists of chapters describing emotional labor theory at different levels of analysis, including the event, person, dyad, and group. The third section illustrates the diversity of emotional labor in distinct occupational contexts: customer service (e.g. restaurant, retail), call centers, and caring work. The fourth section considers broader contextual influences – organizational-, societal-, and cultural-level factors – that modify how and when emotional labor is done. The final section presents a series of ‘reflective essays’ from eminent scholars in the area of emotion and emotion regulation, where they reflect upon the past, present and future of emotion regulation at work.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to explore the essence of the lived experiences of individuals who self-identified as having experienced workplace incivility in corporate settings and to understand how their experiences affected them on personal and professional levels. This research gained not only the perspective of those individuals who self-identified as being on the receiving end of workplace incivility, known as "targets, but also those who initiated incivility in the workplace--individuals known as "instigators"--and those who were spectators to incivility being done to others, called "observers." Prior research shows over the last couple of decades, workplace incivility has increased and continues to worsen (Pearson & Porath, 2005) with nearly all employees having indicated they have been on the receiving end of incivility and or having directly witnessed it (Porath & Pearson, 2010). Of the 15 individuals who participated in this research, 12 were female and three were male. The participants worked in the Human Resources field in diverse organizations and in various locations throughout Northern California. Three research questions guided this research study: (a) What workplace incivility behaviors do employees experience in organizations? (b) How do employees respond to various forms of workplace incivility? and (c) What are the antecedents and consequences of workplace incivility? The findings identified that (a) workplace incivility continues to thrive in the work environment, (b) workplace incivility has negative consequences, (c) responses to workplace incivility by organizations can vary, and (d) Human Resources employees many times have no one to turn to when they find themselves as targets. More research is needed to determine how best to make organizations aware that workplace incivility is alive and thriving and can have detrimental effects not only upon the organization, but its employees. In addition, companies need to be trained on how best to deal with workplace incivility and implement strategies to best address the phenomenon. Lastly, further research is warranted to determine if emotional intelligence can help organizations, in particular leaders, effectively deal with workplace incivility.

Like the men, they are cordial, gregarious, and express their ethos appropriately; they roll with punches well to stress. We discovered that 68% are extremely and highly worried of the devastating effects of the pandemic of mass destruction. A stress prevention strategy coupled with coping strategies such as the employment of Wellness programs, breathing, peer support, counselling, religion, exercising, encouraging holiday to the beach and meditation to be employed by Secretaries. Cognitive coping and active coping strategies can be encouraged to Secretaries.
