Book Compressibility Effects on the Longitudinal Stability and Control of a Pursuit type Airplane as Measured in Flight

Download or read book Compressibility Effects on the Longitudinal Stability and Control of a Pursuit type Airplane as Measured in Flight written by William N. Turner and published by . This book was released on 1945 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the longitudinal stability and control of a pursuit-type airplane (the P-39N-1 airplane) were made in flight up to a Mach number of 0.78. The data are presented in the form of curves showing the variation, with center-of-gravity position, dynamic pressure, and Mach number, of the stick-fixed and stick-free stability, control, and balance of the airplane.

Book Flight Stability and Automatic Control

Download or read book Flight Stability and Automatic Control written by Robert C. Nelson and published by WCB/McGraw-Hill. This book was released on 1998 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Flight Stability and Automatic Control presents an organized introduction to the useful and relevant topics necessary for a flight stability and controls course. Not only is this text presented at the appropriate mathematical level, it also features standard terminology and nomenclature, along with expanded coverage of classical control theory, autopilot designs, and modern control theory. Through the use of extensive examples, problems, and historical notes, author Robert Nelson develops a concise and vital text for aircraft flight stability and control or flight dynamics courses.

Book The Effects of Static Margin and Rotational Damping in Pitch on the Longitudinal Stability Characteristics of an Airplane as Determined by Tests of a Model in the NACA Free flight Tunnel

Download or read book The Effects of Static Margin and Rotational Damping in Pitch on the Longitudinal Stability Characteristics of an Airplane as Determined by Tests of a Model in the NACA Free flight Tunnel written by John P. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1944 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: The effects of static margin and rotational damping in pitch on the longitudinal stability characteristics of an airplane have been determined by flight tests of a model in the NACA free-flight tunnel. In the investigation, the rotational damping in pitch was varied over a wide range by using horizontal tails that varied in area from 0 to 24 percent of the wing area. A range of static margins from 2 to 16 percent of the mean aerodynamic chord was covered in the tests. For each test condition the model was flown and the longitudinal steadiness characteristics were noted. It was found in the investigation that longitudinal steadiness was affected to a much greater extent by changes in static margin than by changes in rotational damping. The best longitudinal steadiness was noted at large values of static margin. For all values of rotational damping, the steadiness of the model decreased as the static margin was reduced. The model was especially unsteady at low values of static margin (0.03 or less). Reduction in rotational damping had little effect on longitudinal steadiness, except that with low values of static margin (0.03 or less) the longitudinal divergences were sometimes more violent with the tailless (low rotational damping) condition.

Book The Use of Geared Spring Tabs for Elevator Control

Download or read book The Use of Geared Spring Tabs for Elevator Control written by William H. Phillips and published by . This book was released on 1945 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: Equations are presented for the stick force per g in maneuvers obtained with a geared spring tab. A geared spring tab, as defined herein, differs from an ordinary spring tab in that, when the elevator is moved with the stick free at zero airspeed, the tab moves with respect to the elevator in the same manner as a conventional geared, or balancing, tab. The geared spring tab is shown to present the theoretical possibility of obtaining a value of force per g independent of speed regardless of the spring stiffness. If the geared spring tab is used in conjunction with an elevator that has zero variation of hinge moment with angle of attack, the force per g may be made independent of speed at any center-of-gravity location. A suitably designed geared spring tab will provide adequate ground control, small sensitivity of the control forces to slight changes in the elevator hinge-moment parameters, and substantially no variation of stick force per g with speed. The geared spring tab is shown to be most suitable for application to large airplanes.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aeroelastic phenomena arising from the interaction of aerodynamic, elastic, and inertial forces, and the loads resulting from flight/ground maneuvers and gust/turbulence encounters, have a significant influence upon aircraft design. The prediction of aircraft aeroelastic stability, response, and loads requires application of a range of interrelated engineering disciplines.
