Book excerpt: The study here reported was made to evaluate some of the principles used by skilled sawyers as well as some of the principles developed at the Forest Products Laboratory for getting the optimum grade from all logs. The study, which was statistically designed, evaluates six sawing methods for which the sawing faces were positioned relative to gross external defects and the amount of setout for log taper. Lumber-grade yield tallies were summarized, and a quality index was computed for individual logs, each grade, and each method. This index was calculated from the value of the lumber sawn, based on prevailing market quotations. It was concluded from the study that sawmill operators lose considerable money in producing their lumber by ignoring the position of defects on sawing faces and taper setout. (Author).
