Performance of single-leg vertical jumps initiated from various stride run-up lengths was not significantly affected by ankle taping or bracing. This study failed to show a statistical significance in decreased vertical jump heights in subjects with taped and braced ankles when compared to vertical jump heights in subjects with bare ankles. Ankle taping and bracing are widely accepted practices in sports medicine for injury rehabilitation and prevention. Taping and bracing a sprained ankle allowed athletes to return to sport quickly and safely after sustaining an injury. Researchers found both taping and bracing a sprained ankle reduced the occurrence of reinjury. Athletes often will not compromise performance for safety and injury prevention. Therefore, the chosen prosthetics must not hinder performance as they offer protection. Otherwise, athletes will not be compliant.

For this study, 10 females (age: 18-24 years), were randomly selected from a group (N= 24) of well-trained intercollegiate athletes, who had been competitive for at least 4 years in a jumping sport.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The current study compared the effects of ankle stabilizers on the vertical jump, agility, and dynamic balance performance. The ankle stabilizers utilized were Swede-O Ankle Lok Brace, Air-Cast Air-Stirrup Ankle Brace, athletic taping, and the nonsupport condition. Vertical jump performance was measured using the vertical jump test, agility performance was measured using the Right-Boomerang Run test, and dynamic balance performance was measured using the Modified Bass Test of Dynamic Balance. No statistically significant (p = .27) difference existed in the heights of the jumps performed by participants (N = 10) in the vertical jump test. No statistically significant difference (p = .08) existed in the points obtained by participants in the Modified Bass Test of Dynamic Balance. A statistically significant difference (p = .03) existed in the run times obtained by participants in the Right Boomerang Run test for agility. A post-hoc Bonferroni test did not show any significant differences in the pairwise comparisons. Standardized effect sizes revealed similar decrements in performance when using any type of ankle stabilizer in comparison to the nonsupport condition. Ankle stabilizers are primarily designed to restrict inversion and eversion of the ankles. Vertical jumping mostly requires dorsiflexion and plantarflexion, and thus might not be affected when using ankle stabilizers. The rigidity offered by the ankle stabilizers might make it more difficult for the participants to change direction quickly enough, which could hinder have hindered agility performance. The test for dynamic balance did not require quick changes in direction. As ankle tape was custom-molded for every participant, the Swede-O Ankle Lok Brace was worn like regular shoes, and the ability to change directions quickly, which is negatively affected when using the Air Cast Air-Stirrup ankle brace was not tested for dynamic balance, the dynamic balance performance was probably not negatively affected when using any ankle stabilizer.

Book excerpt: Background: Many athletes of various sports have been required to wear ankle braces for prophylactic uses. Ankle braces have been shown to decrease range of motion in all directions, which means the main force absorption mechanism of the ankle may be inhibited. This decrease in force absorption at the ankle may increase the mechanical demands at the more proximal knee and hip joints. In this study, the change in knee, hip and lower back mechanics will be investigated to gain understanding as to whether bracing the ankle could create a higher injury potential. Methods: In this study, 12 intercollegiate basketball players (6 female, 6 male) participated during one session, in which each subject tested for each taping condition (self-adherent, adhesive cloth, and no tape). For each trial, the participants performed three maximum vertical jump trials and three depth drop trials, a 15-minute bout of exercise, and subsequently three more maximum vertical jumps and three more depth drops. The participants' lower body kinematics and kinetics were measured using 3D motion capture and force plates. Results: Analysis of ankle bracing pre- and post-exercise on lower extremity kinematics and kinetics through a two-way MANOVA yielded results that were not significant for any of the variables, including their interaction effect. There was no effect of the three different types of ankle bracing (control, adhesive, and self-adhesive), exercise (pre-and post-), or the interaction of those variables on peak hip flexion, peak knee flexion, peak knee moment, peak hip moment, and peak lumbosacral moment. Conclusion: Ankle bracing had no effect on selected lower body kinematics and kinetics. More research should be done to better understand whether ankle bracing has the potential to increase injury at other joints.

Hypothesis: A) A statistically significant mean increase of knee joint valgus and extensor moments and valgus angles would be found in the braced group during the drop vertical jump and the single log hop tests and B) A statistically significant mean decrease in knee joint varus and extensor moments and valgus angles will be found between pre- and post-test acclimation periods in the braced condition. Study Design: Randomized Controlled Trial. Methods: Fifteen adolescent female athletes performed Drop Vertical Jump (DVJ) and Single Leg Hop (SLH) tests without ankle bracing and with a lace-up style ankle brace. Subjects wore braces over a 1 week period and retested. Results: During the DVJ, bracing increased knee extensor moments during the first 50 ms of landing but had no affect on knee frontal plane moments. Bracing increased vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) within the first 50ms of landing, and peak vGRF with less time to achieve peak vGRF. During the SLH, bracing increased knee flexion at IC and decreased knee frontal plane displacement into valgus. Ankle bracing increased vGRF within the first 50ms of landing and decreased stance time. Conclusions: Ankle bracing increased vGRF and knee extensor moments during the first 50ms of landing. Clinical Relevance: The adolscent female athlete may be at risk for knee injury during the initial landing phse when wearing a lace-up style ankle brace.

Book excerpt: Ankle injuries are the most common injury in physically active adults with roughly 15% to 30% of all physical activity injuries being ankle injuries. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a self-adherent ankle taping in reducing peak ankle inversion angle and peak ankle eversion moment upon landing during a max vertical jump and depth drop compared to jumping without a prophylactic ankle stabilizer. Twelve volunteers participated in testing procedure on two separate days. Day one consisted of orientation while day two consisted of experimental data collection. The participant's peak inversion angle and eversion moment were measured using 3D motion capture software and force plates during landing from a maximal vertical jump and depth drop. In support of our hypothesis, peak ankle inversion angle during landing decreased 19% as a result of wearing self-adhesive tape when compared to adhesive tape (p= .002). Additionally, peak inversion angle upon landing from a depth drop was 20% less with self-adherent tape as compared to adhesive tape (p= .018). Despite the differences in peak inversion angles, the subjects experienced nearly identical peak ankle eversion moments during the landing phase of both a vertical jump as well as a depth drop both before and after exercise. In conclusion, self-adherent tape showed promise as an alternative to standard adhesive tape in restricting peak ankle inversion. When comparing self-adhesive tape to adhesive tape, the difference in peak inversion angle remains the only advantage of self-adherent tape found by this study.

Book excerpt: Context: A closed basket-weave ankle tape application is commonly used by healthcare professionals in order to give support to the athlete's ankle during activity. This closed basket-weave ankle tape is used to prevent the ankle joint from going into excessive plantarflexion and inversion. Previous research has demonstrated traditional ankle taping techniques, with the ankle in a dorsiflexed position, reduces range of motion at the ankle. Due to the extreme demands placed on the ankle during dancing, which often requires the dancer to place the ankle in a maximally plantarflexed position, it is unclear how taping in this position affects range of motion or dynamic performance. Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify whether taping an ankle in a neutral position, rather than a dorsiflexed position, will provide the similar range of motion restraints, while not hindering jump performance. Design: This was an assessor-blinded, crossover study to assess the difference in taping position and its effect on ankle range of motion, and ground reaction force at the ankle. Participants: Participants were recruited from the Dance Performance undergraduate program at the host institution. Inclusion criteria included dancers with no history of ankle injury within the past 6 months, no history of surgery on the ankle joint in the past 12 months. Participants also needed to have five or more years of experience in either ballet, modern, or jazz. Interventions: The independent variables assessed are the application of a closed basket-weave ankle tape with the ankle in a dorsiflexed position and in a neutral "relaxed" position. Main Outcome Measures: The dependent variables assessed are range of motion measurements immediately after tape application and ground reaction force during a bipedal vertical jump while taped in each condition. Results: There was statistical significance in range of motion between no-tape and the taped conditions. No significant difference was found in range of motion between the two tape conditions. No significant difference in ground reaction force between all conditions. Conclusions: The positioning of the foot, whether it be dorsiflexed or neutral, does not jump performance and restricts range of motion similarly when applying a closed basket-weave ankle tape.
