Many of these were carried for hundreds of miles and rubbed against the surface rocks or against each other until ground into powder. When the limit of advance was reached, where the ice largely melted, this material was deposited in a broad, undulating ridge, or moraine. When the ice melted away more rapidly than the glacier advanced, the terminus of the glacier would recede and leave the moraine to mark the outer limit of the ice sheet.
