Book The evolution of human intelligence

Download or read book The evolution of human intelligence written by Brunetto Chiarelli and published by Edizioni Altravista. This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human body is a biological construction founded on the physical manifestation of the biological being, in which its cultural identity is a variable in continuous transformation subjected to the evolution of the intelligences. This article asks and answers a series of questions: what have been the procedures, the stimuli, and the mechanisms that have lead to the evolution of human intelligence? why has the increase in the quantity of cerebral material advanced, and how many rearrangements have come about in the organisation of the encephalon in the transition from Homo habilis to Homo sapiens? Can we reconstruct them? Is today’s situation stable, or will it be subject to further future differentiations? During his evolutionary process, man becomes revertebrated, he intervenes and changes the environment to his own advantage, but how many times has he redesigned his post-evolutionary strategies and split the species? What weight has education had in the process of coexistence among living systems, and to what extent can the intelligence be motivated by an education and a culture that are equal to their task?

Book Educational Research and Schooling in Rural Europe

Download or read book Educational Research and Schooling in Rural Europe written by Cath Gristy and published by IAP. This book was released on 2020-07-01 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides authentic accounts of the effects of the revolutionary political reform experienced in the past half century on education in Europe’s considerable rural hinterland. These reforms include the liberation of the Baltic and Eastern European states from Soviet communist domination, the ‘eurozone’ economic crises, and the current and future migration of people fleeing war and poverty from the Middle East and Africa. Overshadowing these events are so-called global forces which champion economies of scale and pressurize academic performance as keys to economic success. Trapped in this distal whirlwind of change are 1000s of small and/or rural elementary schools and the life chances of more 1000s of young children. The research presented here unveils the unseen and under-reported consequences of top-down, urban-oriented educational policies on children’s and communities’ experience of place and space. Exposure of these conditions in rural Europe is long overdue, but obscured for decades by political extremes of left and right. Yet, the lived reality of peremptory and swathing school closure programmes, and poverty inflicted on rural populations in parts of Eastern Europe is relatively unreported in the western educational literature – a situation exacerbated by the virtual invisibility of rural educational research generally. The chapters in this book reveal the insights of social science scholars from 11 European countries including those from low GDP, formerly soviet bloc countries, recently enabled to present their research at western European conferences such as the European Educational Research Association. Their research will inform and alert education academics, researchers and professionals to these rural European educational contexts. The research methodologies reported are diverse and innovative. The national context chapters are complemented by overview chapters which survey and synthesise (i) definitions and conceptualisations of rural, (ii) pan-European appraisal of educational, structural and geospatial statistics on small and rural schools, and (iii) identify key messages for better understanding of the rural situation in European research, policy and practice. Crucially, despite the gloom, the authors report positive strategies for rural school survival at governmental and/or school and community levels, that include community involvement, rural educational tourism, and deliberative inter-community school network planning.

This book was released on 2024-06-14 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume recognises the need to cultivate a critical and acute understanding of AI technologies amongst primary and elementary school children, enabling them to meet the challenge of a human- and ethically oriented management of AI technologies. Focusing on school settings from both the national and international level to form comparative case studies, chapters present a robust conceptual and foundational framework within a global context as the idea of AI and our relationship to it advances apace. The book uses research garnered from interviews and observational data, qualitative and quantitative research, and theoretical findings gathered from single schools or institutions across the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Verso un intelligenza digitale written by Antonio Battro and published by Ledizioni. This book was released on 2010-05-10 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Come ha affermato ormai quasi quindici anni fa Nicholas Negroponte: “Viviamo in un’era digitale. E’ impossibile negarlo.

Download or read book Una mente per i numeri written by Barbara Oakley and published by Logus mondi interattivi. This book was released on 2020-11-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Problem Based Learning written by Howard S. Barrows, MD and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 1980-03-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the authors address some basic problems in the learning of biomedical science, medicine, and the other health sciences. Students in most medical schools, especially in basic science courses, are required to memorize a large number of "facts," facts which may or may not be relevant to medical practice. Problem-based learning has two fundamental postulates--the learning through problem-solving is much more effective for creating a body of knowledge usable in the future, and that physician skills most important for patients are problem-solving skills, rather than memory skills. This book presents the scientific basis of problem-based learning and goes on to describe the approaches to problem-based medical learning that have been developed over the years at McMaster University, largely by Barrows and Tamblyn.

Book Education Literacy and Humanization

Download or read book Education Literacy and Humanization written by Peter Roberts and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-05-30 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author adopts a holistic approach in exploring the ontological, epistemological, ethical, and pedagogical dimensions of Paulo Freire's thought. The book discusses Freire's approach to adult literacy education and investigates the political, dialogical, and critical aspects to the multidimensional word in Freirean theory. The author outlines and assesses a number of key critiques of Freire's modernism, concentrating in particular on questions pertaining to the problem of pedagogical intervention. He responds at some length to C.A. Bowers, one of Freire's most important and persistent critics, and finds fault with behaviorist, stage-based accounts of consciousness raising. The Freirean concept of conscientization is reinterpreted in light of the postmodern notion of multiple subjectivities. From this book, Freire emerges as a complex educational figure: a thinker and teacher deeply committed to the universalist ideal of humanization, yet also wary of some of the exaggerated certainties of modernism. His work, for all its flaws and contradictions, remains highly influential and stands opposed to technicist and neoliberal tendencies in recent educational reform initiatives.

Book Digital Games and Mathematics Learning

Download or read book Digital Games and Mathematics Learning written by Tom Lowrie and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital games offer enormous potential for learning and engagement in mathematics ideas and processes. This volume offers multidisciplinary perspectives—of educators, cognitive scientists, psychologists and sociologists—on how digital games influence the social activities and mathematical ideas of learners/gamers. Contributing authors identify opportunities for broadening current understandings of how mathematical ideas are fostered (and embedded) within digital game environments. In particular, the volume advocates for new and different ways of thinking about mathematics in our digital age—proposing that these mathematical ideas and numeracy practices are distinct from new literacies or multiliteracies. The authors acknowledge that the promise of digital games has not always been realised/fulfilled. There is emerging, and considerable, evidence to suggest that traditional discipline boundaries restrict opportunities for mathematical learning. Throughout the book, what constitutes mathematics learnings and pedagogy is contested. Multidisciplinary viewpoints are used to describe and understand the potential of digital games for learning mathematics and identify current tensions within the field. Mathematics learning is defined as being about problem solving; engagement in mathematical ideas and processes; and social engagement. The artefact, which is the game, shapes the ways in which the gamers engage with the social activity of gaming. In parallel, the book (as a te xtual artefact) will be supported by Springer’s online platform—allowing for video and digital communication (including links to relevant websites) to be used as supplementary material and establish a dynamic communication space.

Book The Myth of Achievement Tests

Download or read book The Myth of Achievement Tests written by James J. Heckman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achievement tests play an important role in modern societies. They are used to evaluate schools, to assign students to tracks within schools, and to identify weaknesses in student knowledge. The GED is an achievement test used to grant the status of high school graduate to anyone who passes it. GED recipients currently account for 12 percent of all high school credentials issued each year in the United States. But do achievement tests predict success in life? The Myth of Achievement Tests shows that achievement tests like the GED fail to measure important life skills. James J. Heckman, John Eric Humphries, Tim Kautz, and a group of scholars offer an in-depth exploration of how the GED came to be used throughout the United States and why our reliance on it is dangerous. Drawing on decades of research, the authors show that, while GED recipients score as well on achievement tests as high school graduates who do not enroll in college, high school graduates vastly outperform GED recipients in terms of their earnings, employment opportunities, educational attainment, and health. The authors show that the differences in success between GED recipients and high school graduates are driven by character skills. Achievement tests like the GED do not adequately capture character skills like conscientiousness, perseverance, sociability, and curiosity. These skills are important in predicting a variety of life outcomes. They can be measured, and they can be taught. Using the GED as a case study, the authors explore what achievement tests miss and show the dangers of an educational system based on them. They call for a return to an emphasis on character in our schools, our systems of accountability, and our national dialogue.
