Book excerpt: This book provides authentic accounts of the effects of the revolutionary political reform experienced in the past half century on education in Europe’s considerable rural hinterland. These reforms include the liberation of the Baltic and Eastern European states from Soviet communist domination, the ‘eurozone’ economic crises, and the current and future migration of people fleeing war and poverty from the Middle East and Africa. Overshadowing these events are so-called global forces which champion economies of scale and pressurize academic performance as keys to economic success. Trapped in this distal whirlwind of change are 1000s of small and/or rural elementary schools and the life chances of more 1000s of young children. The research presented here unveils the unseen and under-reported consequences of top-down, urban-oriented educational policies on children’s and communities’ experience of place and space. Exposure of these conditions in rural Europe is long overdue, but obscured for decades by political extremes of left and right. Yet, the lived reality of peremptory and swathing school closure programmes, and poverty inflicted on rural populations in parts of Eastern Europe is relatively unreported in the western educational literature – a situation exacerbated by the virtual invisibility of rural educational research generally. The chapters in this book reveal the insights of social science scholars from 11 European countries including those from low GDP, formerly soviet bloc countries, recently enabled to present their research at western European conferences such as the European Educational Research Association. Their research will inform and alert education academics, researchers and professionals to these rural European educational contexts. The research methodologies reported are diverse and innovative. The national context chapters are complemented by overview chapters which survey and synthesise (i) definitions and conceptualisations of rural, (ii) pan-European appraisal of educational, structural and geospatial statistics on small and rural schools, and (iii) identify key messages for better understanding of the rural situation in European research, policy and practice. Crucially, despite the gloom, the authors report positive strategies for rural school survival at governmental and/or school and community levels, that include community involvement, rural educational tourism, and deliberative inter-community school network planning.

Ci si è resi forse conto, grazie anche alla numerosa letteratura scientifica in merito, che un approccio che vede lo studente passivo nel processo di apprendimento non è funzionale al raggiungimento dell’obiettivo principale dell’istruzione, che è quello di “garantire il successo formativo di tutti e di ciascuno” e di sviluppare al massimo il potenziale (di impronta vigotskjiana) che c’è in ognuno di noi. La mera ripetizione di ciò che ci è stato trasmesso dal docente, non ha radici profonde e salde ed è facilmente deteriorabile nella memoria. Ci si è resi conto che un approccio costruttivista mette lo studente al centro di un ambiente di apprendimento significativo, in un processo attivo, collaborativo, partecipato e sfidante. Che la sola intelligenza è importante, ma non sufficiente per un successo formativo e che le teorie delle intelligenze multiple di Gardner e dell’intelligenza emotiva di Goleman sono dominanti per un apprendimento efficace (caratterizzato da fiducia, curiosità, intenzionalità, connessione con gli altri e capacità di cooperare, condividere e comunicare). Che sviluppare il pensiero critico e creativo che vede l’utilizzo delle analogie (riprese anche dalla sinettica gordoniana) e delle metafore come strumenti e facilitatori, la capacità di autocorrezione e la competenza metacognitiva sono la chiave di volta per un apprendimento stabile e duraturo che garantisce motivazione, influenzando la direzione, la forza e la persistenza dell’azione formativa in un atto consapevole. “Una mente per i numeri. Memoria e apprendimento efficace” di Barbara Oakley aiuta a comprendere e a confermare tutto questo e lo fa nel migliore dei modi: con l’esemplificazione di casi, strategie e tecniche, pause di riflessione, focus riepilogativi. Lo fa con un’attenzione specifica per le discipline scientifiche, ma è tranquillamente trasferibile in tutti gli altri ambiti di studio.

The Freirean concept of conscientization is reinterpreted in light of the postmodern notion of multiple subjectivities. From this book, Freire emerges as a complex educational figure: a thinker and teacher deeply committed to the universalist ideal of humanization, yet also wary of some of the exaggerated certainties of modernism. His work, for all its flaws and contradictions, remains highly influential and stands opposed to technicist and neoliberal tendencies in recent educational reform initiatives.

They are used to evaluate schools, to assign students to tracks within schools, and to identify weaknesses in student knowledge. The GED is an achievement test used to grant the status of high school graduate to anyone who passes it. GED recipients currently account for 12 percent of all high school credentials issued each year in the United States. But do achievement tests predict success in life? The Myth of Achievement Tests shows that achievement tests like the GED fail to measure important life skills. James J. Heckman, John Eric Humphries, Tim Kautz, and a group of scholars offer an in-depth exploration of how the GED came to be used throughout the United States and why our reliance on it is dangerous. Drawing on decades of research, the authors show that, while GED recipients score as well on achievement tests as high school graduates who do not enroll in college, high school graduates vastly outperform GED recipients in terms of their earnings, employment opportunities, educational attainment, and health. The authors show that the differences in success between GED recipients and high school graduates are driven by character skills. Achievement tests like the GED do not adequately capture character skills like conscientiousness, perseverance, sociability, and curiosity. These skills are important in predicting a variety of life outcomes. They can be measured, and they can be taught. Using the GED as a case study, the authors explore what achievement tests miss and show the dangers of an educational system based on them. They call for a return to an emphasis on character in our schools, our systems of accountability, and our national dialogue.
