Book excerpt: This volume represents a beginning effort to compile a history of educational psychology The project began, innocuously enough, several years ago when we decided to add mon material about the history of educational psychology to the undergraduate course we were teaching. What seemed like a simple task became very complex as we searched in vain for a volume dealing with the topic. We ended up drawing on various histories of psychology that devoted anywhere from a few paragraphs to several pages to the topic and on a very few articles addressing the issue. We were startled, frankly, by the apparent lack of interest in the history of our field and decided to attempt to compile a history ourselves. As is the case with any edited volume, the contributing authors deserve credit for its positive features. They uniformly made every effort asked of them and taught us much about educational psychology. Any errors or omissions are our responsibility alone.

It is curious that each discipline has received considerable attention in its own right but little effort has been made to cross-fertilize them. Some experimentalists view this union as the equivalent of committing academic adultery; they have tended to concentrate on general theories and models of motor control and movement, viewing individual differences as awkward and best assigned to the error variance component of an analysis. By neglecting person variables, valuable information is discarded: people do differ in terms of ability, attitude, motivation and temperament and it is hardly surprising that such differences interact with a variety of experimental and situational para digms. The causes and determinants of individual differences must be examined at an interdisciplinary level, incorporating studies from experimental, physio logical, clinical and educational psychology. This synthesis could not have been actualized by any single contributor. For this reason, a multi-authored approach has been adopted, in which 17 specialists have been assembled to present the current position of individual difference research in their respective disciplines. The authors were granted maximum freedom in their selection and present ation of material. What emerges is, hopefully, a novel and informative col lection of articles addressed to a wide audience and providing an impulse for further research.

Individual differences in working memory have been related to reasoning, problem solving, reading comprehension, discourse comprehension, intelligence, and a great many more cognitive tasks. Chapter One presents a review of working memory theories that call for access to long-term memory to supplement the limited capacity of working memory during complex cognitive processing. It also presents a review of the evidence that facilitation of procedural memory is an individual difference related to complex cognitive processing, and the different theoretical interpretations of that evidence. Chapter Two discusses individual differences in two health-related outcomes: emergency severity index (ESI) scores as assigned to patients by nurses and other healthcare professionals, and pain scores as reported by patients. Chapter Three examines the psychological effect of a forest environment and how it can differ depending on a subject's initial values. Chapter Four focuses on non-cognitive predictors of individual differences in education outcomes, and discusses the model of mental toughness. Chapter Five studies if non-criminal psychopathy is associated with reduced electrodermal arousal using measures comparable to those employed with criminal samples. Chapter Six discusses associations between the Big Five personality traits and social physique anxiety in women. The last chapter uses a theory-based approach to examine the construct validity and the usefulness of the OCEAN.20 personality dimensions in predicting training/academic performance.
