Book Searching for a Cultural Diplomacy

Download or read book Searching for a Cultural Diplomacy written by Jessica C. E. Gienow-Hecht and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies on the meaning of cultural diplomacy in the twentieth century often focus on the United States and the Cold War, based on the premise that cultural diplomacy was a key instrument of foreign policy in the nation’s effort to contain the Soviet Union. As a result, the term “cultural diplomacy” has become one-dimensional, linked to political manipulation and subordination and relegated to the margin of diplomatic interactions. This volume explores the significance of cultural diplomacy in regions other than the United States or “western” countries, that is, regions that have been neglected by scholars so far—Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. By examining cultural diplomacy in these regions, the contributors show that the function of information and exchange programs differs considerably from area to area depending on historical circumstances and, even more importantly, on the cultural mindsets of the individuals involved.

Book Cultural Diplomacy in Europe

Download or read book Cultural Diplomacy in Europe written by Caterina Carta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume explores European cultural diplomacy, a topic of growing interest across the scholarly and applied public policy communities in recent years. The contributions focus on Europe, culture and diplomacy and the way they are interlinked in the contemporary international context. The European Union increasingly resorts to cultural assets and activity for both internal and external purposes, to foster European cohesion and advancing integration, and to mitigate the demise of other foreign policy components, respectively. This calls for an analysis of the strategic role of culture, especially as it relates to the realm of EU external action. The chapters provide a conceptual discussion of culture in international relations and examine how this concept relates to cultural diplomacy and cultural strategy. The authors discuss roles and relationships with the EU’s 2016 Global Strategy and current EU attempts to foster the EU’s political and societal resilience.

Book Cultural Diplomacy Beyond the National Interest

Download or read book Cultural Diplomacy Beyond the National Interest written by Ien Ang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural Diplomacy: Beyond the National Interest? is the first book bringing together, from the perspective of the cultural disciplines, scholarship that locates contemporary cultural diplomacy practices within their social, political, and ideological contexts, while examining the different forces that drive them. The contributions to this book have two methodologies: the first, to deconstruct and demystify cultural diplomacy, notably the ‘hype’ that accompanies it, especially when it is yoked to the notion of ‘soft power’; the second, to better understand how contemporary cultural diplomacy actually operates. In applying a cultural lens to the question, this book probes whether there can be such a thing as a cultural diplomacy ‘beyond the national interest’. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Cultural Policy.

Book Public Diplomacy

Download or read book Public Diplomacy written by Nicholas J. Cull and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New technologies have opened up fresh possibilities for public diplomacy, but this has not erased the importance of history. On the contrary, the lessons of the past seem more relevant than ever, in an age in which communications play an unprecedented role. Whether communications are electronic or hand-delivered, the foundations remain as valid today as they ever have been. Blending history with insights from international relations, communication studies, psychology, and contemporary practice, Cull explores the five core areas of public diplomacy: listening, advocacy, cultural diplomacy, exchanges, and international broadcasting. He unpacks the approaches which have dominated in recent years – nation-branding and partnership – and sets out the foundations for successful global public engagement. Rich with case studies and examples drawn from ancient times through to our own digital age, the book shows the true capabilities and limits of emerging platforms and technologies, as well as drawing on lessons from the past which can empower us and help us to shape the future. This comprehensive and accessible introduction is essential reading for students, scholars, and practitioners, as well as anyone interested in understanding or mobilizing global public opinion.

Book French Scientific and Cultural Diplomacy

Download or read book French Scientific and Cultural Diplomacy written by Philippe Lane and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: France has long pursued active cultural and scientific diplomacy, historically aiming to both ensure and celebrate the international presence of France in language, culture, communication, higher education, and research. French Scientific and Cultural Diplomacy asks whether such diplomacy is in danger. Examining the network of embassies, cultural institutions, and various agencies across a range of sectors, it asks whether and how French diplomatic efforts aimed at helping artists, cultural professionals, teachers, researchers, and intellectuals can be improved, arguing for a coherent foreign policy that better connects disparate sectors and promotes stronger partnerships.
