Book Education Society and Politics in Sweden

Download or read book Education Society and Politics in Sweden written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study combines documentary and ethnographic material which trace the major features of contemporary Swedish society and the historicalorigins of these, and their relationships with the ways in which educational change has proceeded. Variables are categorised into those external to the educational system, including both domestic and foreign policy considerations and worldview, and internal ones. This analysis is applied to the internationalisation of Swedish education as a case study of the inter relations between variables and the process of the legitimation of new knowledge. The main conclusion is that both the content of internationalisation, and the ways in which it is introduced into education, can be deduced from the major processes of socio political steering in Sweden, but unique features of the Swedish polity suggest that these findings may not hold for other, more diverse societies, and that the increasing contradictions within Sweden are also leading to a breakdown in its homogeneity.

Book Education Society and Politics in Sweden Monograph

Download or read book Education Society and Politics in Sweden Monograph written by Robin J. Burns and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interrelationships among the educational, social, and political systems of Sweden are examined, with particular emphasis on the recent trend toward internationalization. Sweden is described in general terms as a highly industrialized, technologically-advanced nation with a high standard of living, far-reaching welfare policies, and high levels of bureaucratization and taxation. Sweden's political system, which has been dominated by the socialist policies and ideology of the Social Democratic party since 1932, has taken seriously its mandate to inculcate children, youth, and adults with the predominantly socialist goals and ideals of Swedish society. Because this inculcation has taken place largely within the formal educational system, the author believes that an examination of educational objectives and practices will result in a clearer understanding of Swedish society. Review of major educational innovations in Sweden since the 1700's indicates that the trend toward internationalization is reflected in a variety of ways, including democratization of education; increase in the number of immigrant students (including political refugees, foreign workers, and children of foreign workers); increase in the number of courses at all educational levels on Sweden's role in the modern world; expansion of programs involving international technical and financial assistance to developing nations; increase in the amount of educational research on international topics; and generous government funding of international affairs institutes such as the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. The conclusion is that there is a close correspondence between the Socialist and international aims and philosphy of Sweden's society, educational system, and political system. (DB)

Book Education Social Background and Cognitive Ability

Download or read book Education Social Background and Cognitive Ability written by Gary N. Marks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are socioeconomic inequalities in education declining? Is socioeconomic background becoming less important for people’s occupational class or status? How important is cognitive ability for education and later occupational outcomes? How do countries differ in the importance of socioeconomic background for education and work? Gary N. Marks argues that in western industrialized countries, pervasive views that socioeconomic background (or class background) has strong and unchanging relationships with education and later socioeconomic outcomes, resistant to policy and social change, are unfounded. Marks provides a large amount of evidence from many countries showing that the influence of socioeconomic background for education is moderate and most often declining, and socioeconomic background has only very weak impacts on adults’ occupation and earnings after taking into account education and cognitive ability. Furthermore, Marks shows that cognitive ability is a more powerful influence than socioeconomic background for educational outcomes, and that in addition to its indirect effects through education has a direct effect on occupation and earnings. Its effects cannot be dismissed as simply another aspect of socioeconomic background, nor do the usual criticisms of ‘cognitive ability’ apply. The declining effects for socioeconomic background and the importance of cognitive ability support several of the contentions of modernization theory. The book contributes to a variety of debates within sociology: quantitative and qualitative approaches, explanatory and non-explanatory theory, the relationship between theory and empirical research, the role of political ideology in research, sociology as a social science, and sociology’s contribution to knowledge about contemporary societies. It will appeal to professionals in the fields of education and sociology as well as postgraduate students and academics involved in the debate.

Book The Social Programs of Sweden

Download or read book The Social Programs of Sweden written by Albert H. Rosenthal and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1967-12-15 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Programs of Sweden was first published in 1967. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. In his forward to this book, Marquis Childs, author of the classic work Sweden: The Middle Way,comments: "There has been a great deal of emotional writing about the effort of the labor government in Stockholm to regulate capitalism and provide a decent standard of living for every citizen. Much of this emotional writing has come from those who for one reason or another have sought to discredit the Swedish experiment ... The net result of much of this highly colored writing has been to ignore the real contribution that Sweden has made in a half dozen fields and particularly in the fields of social security and health. But now comes an author ideally equipped to appraise this contribution by reason of his background. This is the great virtue of this book. It is a careful and thorough examination of Sweden's achievement by a specialist familiar with our own social security, public health and welfare systems ... No subsequent appraisal of what Sweden has done can be made henceforth without this basic work." The author traces the development of the Swedish programs and provides detailed descriptions of the social security, health insurance, public health, and welfare programs, with case examples. He evaluates and compares the programs with their American counterparts, and, in conclusion, considers the effects of the Swedish system on personal freedom. The work is based on extensive research done in Sweden.

Book Social Democracy in Capitalist Society Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Social Democracy in Capitalist Society Routledge Revivals written by Richard Scase and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1977. This book considers the nature of industrial society, contemporary capitalism and the impact of political ideas on social structure. These ideas are discussed by reference to the impact of social democracy on the structure of capitalist society in a comparative analysis of Britain and Sweden — including an interview survey of industrial workers socio-political attitudes. The study is concluded by a general discussion of the role of social democracy in capitalist society. It is argued that the development of social democracy generates ‘strains’ which, in the long term, question the legitimacy of capitalism among industrial manual workers.
