Book Decolonizing Transcultural Teacher Education through Participatory Action Research

Download or read book Decolonizing Transcultural Teacher Education through Participatory Action Research written by Jean Kirshner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes a Participatory Action Research (PAR) project involving educators from Belize and the U.S. to illustrate the critical role of shared dialogue in transnational teacher education. First identifying issues which inhibited the success of formerly didactic training delivered to Belizean teachers by U.S. educators, this volume documents the transformational impact of a shift to collaborative training approaches and uses first-person accounts from Belizean and U.S. stakeholders to illustrate their successes. Chapters powerfully illustrate that by engaging in Freirean-like dialogue and building relationships based on a mutual understanding of the cultural and historical context, as well as the identity of educators involved, partners are better able to engage in effective transnational pedagogical collaboration. Particular attention is paid to the importance of acknowledging the post-colonial setting and unique positionality of teachers in Belize. This text will benefit researchers, academics, and educators with an interest in action research and teacher research, multicultural education, and continued professional development in particular. Those interested in teacher training, education research, and international and comparative education will also benefit from this book.

Book From Island Boy to Professor

Download or read book From Island Boy to Professor written by Alberto Luis August and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-11-24 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book captures the educational journey of a humble boy who once run around on an island and worked his way up to running around on university campuses as a professor. It illustrates the many challenges as a student, as a teacher, and in an educational system with traditional values. It tracks his elementary life, high school life, university life, then his professional life in education. After seeing a system filled with educational limitations, he decided to establish a school to promote child friendly practices and to encourage a small society to change educational practice to that of classrooms conducive to learning. Going through this process alone posted many challenges, but he was very successful. After the success of establishing a school with contemporary practices, far from the norm, the next challenge was to keep the school open. This book serves as motivation to any student, teacher, or leader of education. After reading, one will be inspired to strive to overcome any challenges in education that one may face.

Book Belizean Teachers Perceptions of Intercultural Bilingual Education as a Language Preservation Tool

Download or read book Belizean Teachers Perceptions of Intercultural Bilingual Education as a Language Preservation Tool written by Enita Elecia Barrett and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, the perceptions of 42 teachers—from the Stann Creek District, Belize—regarding the implementation and use of Intercultural Bilingual Education (IBE) as a language preservation tool in their schools were examined. Intercultural Bilingual Education (IBE) is a teaching method that aims at promoting the preservation of indigenous languages by integrating an indigenous language and culture into the academic curriculum, such that students can develop a better appreciation of their history and traditional practices. To examine the perspectives of teachers regarding IBE, Q Methodology was used to examine the research question: What is the range of perspectives teachers hold regarding IBE as a language preservation tool? From participant interviews and responses to an open-ended prompt centered on the research questions, the researcher developed a 40-item Q sample comprising statements that represented distinct perspectives on the use of IBE as a language preservation tool. Forty-two participants then sorted these 40 statements within a forced distribution grid that ranged from "most like my perspective" (+4) to "least like my perspective" (-4). These 42 Q sorts were then correlated; the correlations were then analyzed and rotated using PQ method software. Four factors were extracted from this process and they were converted to factor arrays resembling the same initial forced distribution grid. Based on an interpretation of the holistic configuration of these factor arrays and descriptive comments from participants concerning their sorts, these factors were named as: Strongly Supported IBE (Factor 1), Strongly Opposed but Conflicted about IBE (Factor 2), Cautiously Optimistic about IBE (Factor 3), and Supported IBE for Intergenerational Language Transfer (Factor 4). Implications from this study for administrators of similar programs include the importance of understanding teacher beliefs regarding their preparedness to deliver an IBE curriculum as well as their perceptions regarding the usefulness of such an approach, particularly given the additional instructional time needed to deliver it.

Book Education Reform in Belize

Download or read book Education Reform in Belize written by Wilma N. Wright and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between teacher characteristics (teachers' sense of efficacy, teaching experience, educational qualification, professional qualification, and length of time with the curriculum) and the stages of concern of teachers implementing a new primary school curriculum in the country of Belize. Belizean teachers (N = 173), with varying teaching experience, qualifications and length of time working with the new curriculum, participated in the study. These participants completed a survey consisting of (a) a Stages of Concern Questionnaire, which measured the concerns of teachers towards the implementation of the new curriculum; (b) a Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale, which measured teachers' level of confidence in implementing the new curriculum; and (c) a personal data sheet. Findings from stepwise multiple regression analyses indicated that teachers' sense of efficacy, length of time with the curriculum, teaching experience and professional qualifications significantly correlated with teachers' stages of concern. Qualitative analyses suggested that factors such as the complexity of the new curriculum, the varying viewpoints and interpretations from the change facilitators, and the need for more input from teachers in all aspects of curriculum planning and discussion affected the concerns of teachers working with the new curriculum. The findings have implications for efforts to enhance individual teachers' practice and suggestions for future research.

Book Negotiating Heritage through Education and Archaeology

Download or read book Negotiating Heritage through Education and Archaeology written by Alicia Ebbitt McGill and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an innovative approach that combines years of ethnographic research with British imperial archival sources, this book reveals how cultural heritage has been negotiated by colonial, independent state, and community actors in Belize from the late nineteenth century to the present. Alicia McGill explores the heritage of two African-descendant Kriol communities as seen in the contexts of archaeology and formal education. McGill demonstrates that in both spheres, Belizean institutions have constructed and used heritage places and ideologies to manage difference, govern subjects and citizens, and reinforce development agendas. In the communities studied here, ancient Maya cities and legacies have been prized while Kriol histories have been marginalized, and racial and ethnic inequalities have endured. Yet McGill shows that at the same time, Belizean teachers and children resist, maintaining their Kriol identity through storytelling, subsistence practices, and other engagements with ecological resources. They also creatively identify connections between themselves and the ancient cultures that once lived in their regions. Exploring heritage as a social construct, McGill provides examples of the many ways people construct values, meanings, and customs related to it. Negotiating Heritage through Education and Archaeology is a richly informed study that emphasizes the importance of community-based engagement in public history and heritage studies. Book From Many Cultures One Nation

Download or read book From Many Cultures One Nation written by Sarah Woodbury and published by The Morgan-Stanwood Publishing Group. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children possess national and ethnic identity, whether or not we want them to, and often that identity includes elements of their own devising. Since independence, the Belizean government has sought to promote a national Belizean identity by recognizing the cultures of its multiple ethnic groups, and including all these groups in its social studies curriculum. Thus, in Belize, ethnicity and nationalism are inextricably intertwined. In my research in Punta Gorda, Belize in 1993-94, I dealt directly with schools and children in an attempt to understand how ethnic and nationalist identities are taught and then incorporated by children in practice. This book relates those findings. Keywords: Belize, Children's studies, Children, ethnicity, nationalism, ethnic studies, Central America, Caribbean, Creole, anthropology, education, schools
