Book excerpt: Based on the resulted studies and research projects, it is proved that comprehensive education and teaching about diabetes, foot ulcers and diabetes related health problems is primary method to prevent foot ulcers in diabetic and patients with high risk of developing foot ulcers. By providing teaching and education about routine foot care, regular follow up, and wearing proper fitting shoes can prevent foot ulcer and limb amputation. To teach about the glycemic control and diabetes related effects on overall health is also very important. It is very important to promote compliance with treatment; the teaching must be based on their socioeconomic status, level of education, understanding and interest. It is recommended that providing Verbal and written information to patients and care giver in a handout (Appendix A) will be effective. Teaching must be included with follow up care with podiatrist, endocrinologist, community based foot care programs and other classes to control diabetes. Also the health care providers, nurses and physicians should be trained about patient care with diabetic foot ulcer, diabetes related complications and health issues, so they can provide good care and proper teachings to patients with diabetic foot ulcers for good patient outcome.

Book excerpt: Data collected from documented articles and studies in regards to education about diabetic foot ulcer prevention, the results of this research project showed that comprehensive education about prevention of foot ulceration is very important in diabetic patients with foot ulcers or who are at risk of getting foot ulcers. Comprehensive education comprises the significance of routine foot care and foot evaluation and importance of wearing well fitted shoes for the prevention of further problems and amputation of limb. It has also been verified that along with other interventions such as blood glucose management, information about diabetes and its consequences on patient's overall health is also important. It is also recommended that education and care should be individualized based on patient's level of knowledge and cultural and socioeconomic background for better compliance among patients. Handout material (Appendix A) should be given to the patients during hospitalization and before discharge and teaching should be provided both orally and in written form. For the success of educational program, outpatient classes, follow-up and foot care program should be started soon after discharge. It is also important to educate nurses and related health care staff about diabetes, and strategies for the treatment and prevention of diabetic foot ulcers and regular foot care program so that they can play a major role to implement proper interventions in diabetic patients.
