Book Politics and Educational Change

Download or read book Politics and Educational Change written by Patricia Broadfoot and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1981. Throughout the world, education is a highly contentious political issue. Politicians are involved in educational decision making at all levels and very often educational reform is as much motivated by political ideology as by educational considerations. This book, which draws together the work of many leading authorities, examines the current state of educational politics in many parts of the world. The book looks at the problem from a theoretical and a comparative perspective, and then analyses the problem in particular areas which include North America, Western Europe and Third World countries.

Book Contemporary Issues in Comparative Education

Download or read book Contemporary Issues in Comparative Education written by Keith Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985. In the last two decades education in the Third World has greatly expanded, raising many important issues. Some less developed countries have emulated the West in the style and organisation of their academic systems, hence, it could be said, increasing their dependence. Others have deliberately avoided this path, experimenting with systems more relevant to development and often in a radical way. At a theoretical level, Marxist and neo-Marxist development theorists argue that education systems dependent on the West are evidence of economic dependency and of the correctness of Marxist development theories; while others argue that the evidence points to an interdependent world and that dependency theories do not apply to education. Interestingly two key Marxist Third World Countries, China and Cuba, have very conservative education systems. This book discusses the problems of dependence and interdependence in education throughout the world.

Book Emergent Issues in Education

Download or read book Emergent Issues in Education written by Robert F. Arnove and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1992-07-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Emergent Issues in Education, leading scholars in comparative education and in the politics, sociology, anthropology, and economics of education illuminate worldwide trends in critical issues that confront policymakers and practitioners in different national settings. Among the topics raised and analyzed are the organization, governance, and financing of education; the content of curriculum, texts, and tests; and the quality and nature of teacher training. Among the issues examined is the tension that has emerged between the imperative to achieve equality of educational opportunity and the concern of educational decision makers to maintain and upgrade the quality of academic offerings. Aspects of this tension are manifested in the reform movements of the 1980s, especially the "excellence movement" that has resurfaced in the United States. Reform movements are evident in countries that have experienced increased enrollment at all levels of schooling in the post-World War II period. In the United States, as elsewhere, there has been a reassessment of the relevance of education to the economy and polity, and of the role of government and industry in education.

Book International Perspectives on Academic Assessment

Download or read book International Perspectives on Academic Assessment written by Thomas Oakland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goals and content for this book are derived from three important and ongoing efforts: to advance the institution of education and to promote educational opportunities to children and youth worldwide, to promote effective assessment policies and practices that enhance sound educational practice, and to address the need to develop tests and other assessment practices in less developed countries as well as to augment and alter a number of traditional assessment practices in developed nations. These three issues provided the focus for a four-day conference that was held at St. Hugh's College, Oxford University, in June 1993. The conference theme-Test Use with Children and Youth: International Pathways to Progress-underscores the importance of addressing testing issues as efforts to improve educational opportunities for children and youth move forward. Leaders from more than seventy nations met at the United Nations sponsored World Summit for Children in 1990 to support ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Worldwide recognition that every individual has the right to develop her or his potential led to the ratification of provisions setting minimum standards for children's education.
