Book Reassessing the Impact of Teaching Assistants

Download or read book Reassessing the Impact of Teaching Assistants written by Peter Blatchford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-02-20 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, teaching assistants (TAs) have become an established part of everyday classroom life. TAs are often used by schools to help low-attaining pupils and those with special educational needs. Yet despite the huge rise in the number of TAs working in UK classrooms, very little is known about their impact on pupils. This key and timely text examines the impact of TAs on pupils’ learning and behaviour, and on teachers and teaching. The authors present the provocative findings from the ground-breaking and seminal Deployment and Impact of Support Staff (DISS) project. This was the largest, most in-depth study ever to be carried out in this field. It critically examined the effect of TA support on the academic progress of 8,200 pupils, made extensive observations of nearly 700 pupils and over 100 TAs, and collected data from over 17,800 questionnaire responses and interviews with over 470 school staff and pupils. This book reveals the extent to which the pupils in most need are let down by current classroom practice. The authors present a robust challenge to the current widespread practices concerning TA preparation, deployment and practice, structured around a conceptually and empirically strong explanatory framework. The authors go on to show how schools need to change if they are to realise the potential of TAs. With serious implications not just for classroom practice, but also whole-school, local authority and government policy, this will be an indispensable text for primary, secondary and special schools, senior management teams, those involved in teacher training and professional development, policy-makers and academics.

Book Writing Every Day

Download or read book Writing Every Day written by Kellie Buis and published by Pembroke Publishers Limited. This book was released on 2004 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of today's schools struggle with large class sizes, a continually evolving curriculum, and a wide diversity in the ability and background of their students. How best to build an effective literacy community in this constantly changing environment is an increasingly difficult challenge for teachers, new and experienced alike.InWriting Every DayKellie Buis demonstrates that sharing stories is a fun and engaging way to motivate children and encourage cooperative learning in K 8 classrooms. It proposes students writing letters every day as an efficient, effective, engaging and fun teaching strategy for organizing language instruction. Children s personal stories become the catalyst for language experiences that involve reading, writing, and all forms of communication. Teachers will find novel ways to: bridge the gap between the important principles of sharing stories and practical ideas on how these understandings can be translated into classroom practice; empower students to deepen and enrich their language skills by sharing their ideas, feelings, and experiences; show students how to begin to make sense of themselves, each other, and the world; create a strong partnership between school and home; give children the ability to express themselves and to be heard by others in their community. Student samples throughout the book illustrate the power of using their own life experiences to engage children in authentic reading and writing. Writing daily letters gives children a stronger voice and engenders feelings of self-worth, self-respect, and competence. This strategy reaps benefits beyond the language arts curriculum and helps students make connections and recognize patterns in everything that they read, write, and learn."
