Download or read book Immigration Policy in the Federal Republic of Germany written by Douglas B. Klusmeyer and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2009-11-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German migration policy now stands at a major crossroad, caught between a fifty-year history of missed opportunities and serious new challenges. Focusing on these new challenges that German policy makers face, the authors, both internationally recognized in this field, use historical argument, theoretical analysis, and empirical evaluation to advance a more nuanced understanding of recent initiatives and the implications of these initiatives. Their approach combines both synthesis and original research in a presentation that is not only accessible to the general educated reader but also addresses the concerns of academic scholars and policy analysts. This important volume offers a comprehensive and critical examination of the history of German migration law and policy from the Federal Republic’s inception in 1949 to the present.
Download or read book State Government in the Federal Republic of Germany written by N. Johnson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Government in the Federal Republic of Germany, first published in 1973, has been substantially rewritten and expanded and the title altered in recognition of an emphasis already present in the first edition, and greatly enhanced after revision. Since the first appearance of this authoritative text many changes in the details of organization and procedure have taken place, as well as extensive changes in personnel and, to some extent, in the problems and policy issues which now face those responsible for government in the Federal Republic. In considering these changes the author presents a view of the political institutions of the Federal Republic which develops logically and naturally from his earlier perspective.

Download or read book The Unification of German Education written by Val Dean Rust and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1995 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the integration of East and West German education following the collapse of the German Democratic Republic in 1989 focuses on policy formation and implementation during this period of great social and political turbulence. It is the result of a research project undertaken shortly after the unification. The authors lived in East Germany for a full year, looking carefully at individual schools, vocational training centers, teacher colleges, and universities. They asked macro analytic questions: What are the conditions in which educational policy is successfully formulated? How is this educational policy implemented? What are the consequences of this policy? From the start, West Germany demanded a complete dismantling of the educational system in the former German Democratic Republic. West German political leaders insisted as a condition of unification that all important agreements concerning education made by the GDR states be accepted by the new states. The authors' research shows that even before the unification East Germans had already opted for a system consistent with West German education law. However, the West Germans disregarded these changes and imposed their own version of reform on East Germany. The study reveals that in this period of confusion the East Germans did not fully analyze the implications of the imposed conditions, which now have unforeseen negative consequences. The German situation is of great interest to all educators, particularly students of educational policy making, as well as researchers in political science, economics, and sociology.
Download or read book Learning Democracy written by Brian M. Puaca and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarship on the history of West Germany's educational system has traditionally portrayed the postwar period of Allied occupation as a failure and the following decades as a time of pedagogical stagnation. Two decades after World War II, however, the Federal Republic had become a stable democracy, a member of NATO, and a close ally of the West. Had the schools really failed to contribute to this remarkable transformation of German society and political culture? This study persuasively argues that long before the protest movements of the late 1960s, the West German educational system was undergoing meaningful reform from within. Although politicians and intellectual elites paid little attention to education after 1945, administrators, teachers, and pupils initiated significant changes in schools at the local level. The work of these actors resulted in an array of democratic reforms that signaled a departure from the authoritarian and nationalistic legacies of the past. The establishment of exchange programs between the United States and West Germany, the formation of student government organizations and student newspapers, the publication of revised history and civics textbooks, the expansion of teacher training programs, and the creation of a Social Studies curriculum all contributed to the advent of a new German educational system following World War II. The subtle, incremental reforms inaugurated during the first two postwar decades prepared a new generation of young Germans for their responsibilities as citizens of a democratic state.

Download or read book International Comparisons of Vocational Education and Training for Intermediate Skills written by Paul Ryan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Ryan has brought together the writings of the most prominent British research into vocational preparation in Britain in comparison to the other advanced economies, primarily within the EEC. The book, originally published in 1991, documents various aspects of inadequacy in British practice at the time, concentrating upon intermediate skills, which are of crucial importance for economic performance. The introduction outlines the strengths and weaknesses of comparative research. Part 1 discusses the use which has been made of it by policy makers in Britain and various aspects of comparative methods in practical comparisons, including an Anglo-Scottish one. Part 2 concerns vocational preparation in connection with productivity and produce markets, noting its importance for economic performance and its dependence upon companies’ product choices. Part 3 contains studies of the organization of skills and work and the finance of training within the EEC as a whole. Part 4 comprises studies of training in relation to labour market structures, each of which indicates similar alternatives for training policy in Britain – alternatives whose relevance and political prospects can only be enhanced by the demise of Thatcher government deregulatory policies.
