Book Literacy Goes to School

Download or read book Literacy Goes to School written by Jo Weinberger and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1996-02-28 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `Very accessible - not too technical or jargon-ridden. The practical suggestions were useful too - if professionals feel inspired to promote change in their practice and policy it is helpful to have suggestions on where to start and what to do′ - Management in Education Few primary teachers have a chance to find out in detail what children have already learnt, and continue to learn, about literacy at home with their parents. This book gives a clear demonstration of literacy learning that takes place at home, and how it differs from, as well as relates to, literacy at school. It will help teachers to increase their understanding of this process and to build on their relationship with parents. Such understanding, the book shows, can directly enhance children′s literacy performance in school.

Book Progress and Performance in the Primary Classroom

Download or read book Progress and Performance in the Primary Classroom written by Maurice Galton and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-03 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1980, Progress and Performance in the Primary Classroom assesses the performance of primary schoolchildren in a range of study skills as well as on the more conventional tests of mathematics, language use and reading. The findings indicate that the more successful styles are used by the more experienced teachers, who manage to increase the amount of contact with the pupils by a variety of organizational strategies. While pupils who receive the greatest amount of class teaching do best on mathematics, there is no evidence to suggest that the characteristics of teaching valued by critics of modern primary practice exert any significant influence on pupil progress. The relationship between pupil progress and behaviour shows some remarkable patterns. For example, it was found that children who work on average one day per week less than other children still make the same progress in basic skills as the others. Such findings suggest that there is a need to examine how far teaching in the junior school is sufficiently stimulating and challenging, while at the same time acknowledging the difficulties of improving the situation while class sizes remain relatively high. This book will be of interest to students of education and pedagogy as well as to teachers.

Book Women and the Public Sphere

Download or read book Women and the Public Sphere written by Janet Siltanen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984, Women and the Public Sphere is a collection of essays which challenges the argument that a woman’s sphere is private with relation to politics, and shows it to be profoundly mistaken. The authors demonstrate how all the traditions of political analysis have failed to take into account women’s capacity for political action and thought, and argue for a reconstruction of political analysis which recognizes the importance of gender. The essays are written from different political perspectives, and at different points in time. They span critique and reconstruction, pinpointing problems within the traditional literature, as well as challenging its conceptual framework. This engaging volume will have strong appeal for courses in gender studies, political science and sociology.
