Book excerpt: The study presented here depends on a field survey of refugees' camps in war strifed Darfur region. The data are genuine from people and children. The expelling of NGOs from the region was a moral shock to the whole world, but in Darfur, it was a humanitarian catastrophe affecting the population. In this paper, I surveyed and analyzed data on what I consider the most important factor which are children and establish education as the base of the arguments introduced here. A case study is introduced which is Attash refugees or displaced camp were produced. Data were collected by field questionnaire of the inhabitants of the camp that concentrated on the education backgrounds and the available facilities to educate children. That is besides collected data on socioeconomic and demographic conditions. The results and conclusions emphasize that such facilities are inadequate or non-existent. Malnutrition, inadequate homes and sanitation facilities are common. Very few job opportunities are available and there is no land for the displaced people to practice their traditional profession. Governmental supporting systems are not available or do not exist. Drinking water facilities are insufficient. All indices of human development are very low. Thus, no sane person can reject foreign humanitarian aid. The title for the paper introduced here is that Doctors or Thieves. For the first, they are not sufficiently available and if there is any, they don't have medicines. Of the second, the current conditions only generate thieves in all possible categories who will infest the whole region and country; generations of young people who socially and morally are failures not provided or educated to participate in building the society. Besides my conclusions on impacts on education, I hereby profess that what happens on the camps generates only further economic destitute and entrenching social hatred in the Sudanese nation.

While growing up, I didn't know what racism was and didn't differentiate between people based on their color or religion. I had no access to television or electricity, had never tasted chocolate, and my family put our money in a hole instead of keeping it in a bank. In 2003, I was forced to leave my country with other Darfuris to escape persecution. While in Egypt in 2005, I read the word "refugee" in a book and realized that was me. I have experienced hate and racism because I am a refugee and foreign. I have been called "ponga ponga," "chocolate," "ashikabla," and "koshi." All these terms were meant to humiliate me either for my status as a refugee or for the color of my skin. I have been put in prison for being a refugee. On December 31, 2005, in Egypt, twenty-seven people were killed in front of my eyes simply because they were refugees. This book tells my story, both the happy parts as a child and the challenging parts as a refugee. I want the world to see all of me, not just my skin or my legal status. Because Darfuri refugees aren't just a nameless mass of people. We have families, stories, lives, just like you.

The general services of health, water and education, though meager collapsed. Previous arrangements for the education of the nomads collapsed with the armed conflicts. Regular educational facilities deteriorated. In refugees' camps very little efforts were achieved. NGOs role in helping education with facilities, tools and funding were noticeable with less governmental efforts. The conclusions here imply that the collapse of social cohesion, continued armed conflict and expansions of refugees' camps will only hatch more violence and conflicts.

In Educating for Durable Solutions, Christine Monaghan explores how refugees and policymakers have answered this question over time by reconstructing the contemporary history of education in Kenya's Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps. Through oral histories and archival research, Monaghan shows how, since the founding of both camps in 1991, refugees and policymakers have conceptualized, developed, implemented and changed refugee education programs. She also shows why and how, despite these changes, real challenges persist in refugee education in Dadaab, Kakuma, and other camps throughout the world; these include high numbers of out-of-school children and youth, high student to teacher ratios, unpredictable funding, and persistent questions regarding what refugee education is for. The author shifts focus from debates over the impacts of specific policies and programs and explores instead how and why different policies and programs were implemented whether they led to meaningful changes in the long-standing challenges of refugee education. She finds that when and where real changes occurred, individuals or small groups of refugees and policymakers acted with tremendous agency and as tireless advocates.

Book excerpt: The Darfur crisis has left behind a profound legacy of displacement, with some 300,000 refugees camped on the Chadian side of the border and about 2 million displaced internally within Darfur. Despite a reduction in armed hostilities and violent casualties since 2006, as well as a peace agreement signed at Doha in 2011, limited signs of voluntary repatriation are visible from eastern Chad; where refugees are seemingly willing, but not ready, to return. Further to the Doha peace settlement, they require genuine peace to be in place on the ground, marked by visible changes in the security landscape of Sudan. In particular, they ask for the prosecution of war criminals, disarmament of local militias, adequate compensation for human and physical losses, local reconstruction, and the departure of populations who have settled on their lands in the aftermath of mass atrocities. The marked demographic changes having taken place in Darfur over the past decade, and a ‘peace’ that fails to fully address impunity and be widely accepted, make the fulfillment of these requests seem far-fetched at present. While voluntary return is being discussed nationally and regionally, refugees underscore their profound need for justice and personal safety by remaining in the camps. When and how conditions for safe and dignified return will be met is something they are still carefully considering.

They were just some of the thousands of young men, known as “Lost Boys,” who had been orphaned or otherwise separated from their families in the chaos of a brutal conflict that has ravaged Sudan since 1983. The Lost Boys of Sudan focuses on four of these refugees. Theirs, however, is a typical story, one that repeated itself wherever the Lost Boys could be found across America. Jacob Magot, Peter Anyang, Daniel Khoch, and Marko Ayii were among 150 or so Lost Boys who were resettled in Atlanta.
