Download or read book Edinburgh Medical Journal Vol 41 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, Vol. 41: Part II; January to June, 1896 In the early ages of the world's history it was customary to ascribe all unusual phenomena of Nature - earthquakes, comets, eclipses, and the like - to supernatural causes. Abundant evidence of this is to be found in the literature and legends of the past, and in the customs and beliefs of savage or primitive peoples existing at the present time. Amongst the unusual phenomena of Nature malformations and monstrosities of the human foetus or of the young of the lower animals could scarcely fail to find a place, and so it happens that in the earliest records of teratology are to be found hints, and even proofs, that such occurrences were regarded as due to supernatural agencies. In different parts of the world, and in the same part but at different times, opinions differed as to the nature of the supernatural teratogenic cause and the meaning of the teratological phenomenon. Some peoples ascribed mon strous births to the gods they worshipped; other races, who had divided their pantheon into good and evil deities, put the blame sometimes upon the former and sometimes upon the latter whilst yet others connected teratological states with the position and mode of combination of the stars and other heavenly bodies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, Vol. 27: Combining the Monthly Journal of Medicine and the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal; Part II., January to June, 1882 Most naturally, on such an occasion, we turn our eyes to the past, and think of the long array of physicians who have gone before us, and of the progress which our art has made as the result of their great labours. And not less naturally we survey our present position, and look towards the future, in the hope that we may obtain some slight forecast of what it may have in store for us and for our successors. Let us first turn to the past, and take a rapid survey of certain typical stages or phases of our art, and which are, if duly pondered, in my opinion fitted to yield us instruction and interest of a peculiar kind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, Vol. 10: Combining the Monthly Journal of Medicine and the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal; Part II.; January to June, 1865 Beck, while admitting his inability to explain the case, says that it is one of the strongest yet adduced in favour of the opinion, and that its credibility would seem to be established from the character of the reporter, and the publicity attending it: We are told in the narrative that the mother and both children, two years afterwards, appeared before a notary at Lyons1 to attest the fact in a legal manner, and because, it is stated in this declara tion, that it was also partly to prove her (the mother's) gratitude to Dr Desgranges, and partly to give women who may find them selves in a similar predicament, and whose husbands may be deceased previous to the birth of both of the children, a precedent in favour of their virtue and the legitimacy of the child, Caspar, without one reference to the facts of the case as recorded by Desgranges, and which are detailed by him altogether irrespective of any further connexion with the woman herself, dismisses the whole thing in this summary way For my part, I confess that this remarkable proceeding of this woman, so 'virtuous, ' and so grateful to her doctor for having delivered her renders the whole case perfectly incredible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, Vol. 11: Combining the Monthly Journal of Medicine and the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal; Part II-January to June 1866 It was particularly striking last winter to see the manner in which typhus spread in the poorest district of Bristol. It seldom did so from one house to the next, unless the neighbours were on intimate terms, or unless they had a common privy. The houses in a court with a common privy were affected quickly, one after another; but where each house had its own convenience of this kind, the disease Spread, not next door, but to houses from whence relatives of the sick people had come to visit them, or whither, as occurred in some cases, they had removed the clothes or bedding of their relatives who had died of fever. This district was then the worst drained portion of the city, the most dirty, the most overcrowded, and the inhabitants were the very poorest of the population, were ill-fed, and many were intemperate. Download or read book Edinburgh Medical Journal Vol 34 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, Vol. 34: Combining the Monthly Journal of Medicine and the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal; Part II., January to June 1889 I am unable to assign a definite reason why these bacilli be come engrafted upon a case of chronic laryngitis, or lay hold of the larynges of certain subjects of pulmonary tubercle-bacillary disease and not of others. I do not believe that they come from the pulmonary expectoration in transit, for I have never yet been able to detect them in the secretion 'of the non-tubercular larynx in cases of pulmonary tubercle-bacillary disease. If in such cases one could find them in the secretion of the larynx before structural evidences of their presence were visible, one might assume that they were derived from the pulmonary expectoration. But such is not the case. Whilst tubercle-bacilli, as already stated, may persist in the expectoration of certain subjects of tubercle-bacillary disease for years with 110, or slight apparent results upon the general economy, and without inducing pyrexia or appreciable progressive local changes, still, in view of the fact that they are now considered by most competent authorities the essential factor in the pro duction of tubercular disease, the most important indications of treatment is to get rid of them. How is this to be accomplished? My paper this evening is a short summary of many therapeutic observations made in this direction. It may be assumed that there are three principal methods by which we may endeavour to influence the bacillus of tubercle, namely, by climate, by general, or by local remedies. Combina tions of these may, of course, also be essayed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, Vol. 24: Combining the Monthly Journal of Medicine and the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal; Part II.; January to June 1879 The next S eaker is a young man who has rapidly risen to the very front ran till already be occupies perhaps the most coveted of the obstetrical chairs in Germany. He has the rounded face, the fair hair and complexion, and sanguine temperament Of a typical North German. It is Professor Schroder of Berlin, who relates the result of three cases, in two Of which the Operation had been entirely successful. The Operation had in each case been carried out with Freund's instruments, and almost strictly according to Freund's directions. Professor Muller of Berne relates a successful case of extirpation for carcinoma of the corpus uteri, and thinks it well to leave the cervix in cases where it was not implicated in the disease. Another speaker, young, but portly, with a considerable amount of self-assurance, states that he also has succeeded in extirpating the uterus in three different individuals Without employing Freund's instruments or attending to Freund's instructions. The section, however, manifest anything but sympathy with the views of this gentleman, Dr Carl Martin, the rather, perhaps, that all his three cases ended - and ended soon - fatally.
