I started to recreate what transpired during those thirteen days I was hospitalized. Being the organized person that I am, I arranged all of this information in chronological order. Hailed by the New York Times as "the finest male dancer of his time" when the José Limón Dance Company debuted in 1947, Limón was also a renowned choreographer who won two Dance Magazine Awards and a Capezio Dance Award, two of dance's highest honors. In addition to directing his own dance company, Limón served as artistic director of the Lincoln Center's American Dance Theater and also taught choreography at the Juilliard School for many years. In this volume, scholars and artists from fields as diverse as dance history, art history, Mesoamerican ethnohistory, Mexican American studies, music studies, and Mexican history come together to explore one of José Limón's masterworks, the ballet La Malinche. Offering many points of entry into the dance, they examine La Malinche from various angles, such as Limón's life story and the influence of his Mexican heritage on his work, an analysis of the dance itself, the musical score composed by Norman Lloyd, the visual elements of props and costumes, the history and myth of La Malinche (the indigenous woman who served the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés as interpreter and mistress), La Malinche's continuing presence in Mexican American culture, and issues involved in a modern restaging of the dance. Castañeda has shaped the fields of Western History and Chicana Studies. Yet Castañeda's work has been scattered throughout journals and anthologies, a "paper chase" for historians to track down. Three Decades of Engendering History ends the chase. Book excerpt: My writings began approximately four years ago after receiving a comprehensive genealogy study on my father's side of the family. It prompted many questions about where we came from and how and why we ended up at the tip of Texas. Realizing that while the information was complete, it was lacking in stories. In pursuing more information to fill in some of the gaps, I realized that my children had no idea of my life's history, including my younger years, schooling, sports, military, college, and my thirty-plus-year career. My daughter had blessed me with an iPad, so I began. It is my life story from birth through retirement, and the data is factual, including the side and supplemental descriptions and stories. The youngest of seven children, born during the Depression in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, on the Mexican border, and my life and experiences growing up there on three separate occasions. The forks appearing in my life's road began almost immediately upon graduation from high school when I accepted an athletic scholarship only to drop out during my first semester to join the military before the GI Bill benefits were to expire. After my military obligation and college periods were complete, I accepted my first position as an entry-level accountant with the Bureau of Reclamation in 1961 and proceeded up a career ladder for twelve years before reaching the top rung with an offer to transfer to Denver, Colorado, as regional finance officer in 1973. Five years later, I was asked to assume the first finance officer position with the newly created agency under the Department of Energy of the Western Area Power Administration. In 1980, I was approached to return to Reclamation as a finance officer in Salt Lake City, which was Reclamation's largest and most active region, and had assumed the finance functions for the nation's youth programs as well. The final career movement would come only three years later when the regional management received approval to combine the finance and budget functions in a reorganization effort and changing my title and expanded responsibilities to regional financial manager. Each of these career movements would provide new and different challenges containing many separate forks in my road. I enjoyed them all.

Edinburgh, Texas (now known as Hidalgo) was first established on the Rio Grande River by shopkeeper John Young, who was originally from Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1852, Hidalgo County was formed, and Edinburgh became the county seat. In 1908, the changing course of the river threatened to flood the courthouse, resulting in a small but contentious countywide election about where to move the courthouse. Under armed guard, John Closner and other victors of the election led a hurried move by oxcart through the brush to the undeveloped townsite of Chapin. Dennis Chapin lost his good name and reputation in 1911, and as a result, the town became Edinburg (without the h). Today Edinburg is recognized for its location as a gateway city and as the home of the University of Texas-Pan American. Edinburg residents' pride in their town has shown throughout the years, from beautifying the courthouse square to being named an All-America City three times by the National Civic League.

He was the only man awarded the Medal of Honor for the month-long battle of Hue City--the most violent, intense fighting of the entire 10-year war. Born in Edinburg, Texas, May 23, 1946, Freddy was the only child born to Dolia Gonzalez. She raised him alone on the wages of a waitress and a farm worker.
