Edina's history began with hard working farmers and millers in the 1800s: Irish settlers came to the Cahill area in the late 1840s, which coincided with the potato famine in their homeland. The mill, built in 1857, changed hands four times before Andrew Craik purchased it in 1869. He renamed it Edina Mills, after his hometown of Edinburgh, Scotland. The western part of Richfield Township became known as the Edina Mills area, and in 1888, when area farmers decided to break away from Richfield and form an independent village, they chose the name Edina after the red mill on Minnehaha Creek. Today, Edina has a very successful and civic-minded population. Its growth has been characterized by fine educational, residential, recreational and commercial development. It seemed fitting that Centennial events were planned to reflect the varied interests enjoyed by Edina's most valuable resource - her people. This book was published during Edina's Quasquicentennial.
