Download or read book Race and Multiraciality in Brazil and the United States written by G. Reginald Daniel and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2007-07-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although both Brazil and the United States inherited European norms that accorded whites privileged status relative to all other racial groups, the development of their societies followed different trajectories in defining white/black relations. In Brazil pervasive miscegenation and the lack of formal legal barriers to racial equality gave the appearance of its being a &“racial democracy,&” with a ternary system of classifying people into whites (brancos), multiracial individuals (pardos), and blacks (pretos) supporting the idea that social inequality was primarily associated with differences in class and culture rather than race. In the United States, by contrast, a binary system distinguishing blacks from whites by reference to the &“one-drop rule&” of African descent produced a more rigid racial hierarchy in which both legal and informal barriers operated to create socioeconomic disadvantages for blacks. But in recent decades, Reginald Daniel argues in this comparative study, changes have taken place in both countries that have put them on &“converging paths.&” Brazil&’s black consciousness movement stresses the binary division between brancos and negros to heighten awareness of and mobilize opposition to the real racial discrimination that exists in Brazil, while the multiracial identity movement in the U.S. works to help develop a more fluid sense of racial dynamics that was long felt to be the achievement of Brazil&’s ternary system. Against the historical background of race relations in Brazil and the U.S. that he traces in Part I of the book, including a review of earlier challenges to their respective racial orders, Daniel focuses in Part II on analyzing the new racial project on which each country has embarked, with attention to all the political possibilities and dangers they involve.
Download or read book States of Grace written by Patrícia I. Vieira and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2018-04-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides in-depth analyses of key moments in Brazilian utopianism, including theological-political, matriarchal, environmental, and work-free utopias. States of Grace offers a novel approach to the study of Brazilian culture through the lens of utopianism. Patrícia I. Vieira explores religious and political writings, journalistic texts, sociological studies, and literary works that portray Brazil as a utopian land of the future, where dreams of a coming messianic age and of social and political emancipation would come true. The book discusses crucial utopian moments such as the theological-political utopia proposed by Jesuit Priest Antônio Vieira; matriarchal utopias, like the egalitarian society of the Amazons; work-free utopias that abolished the boundaries separating toil and play; and ecological utopias, where humans and nonhumans coexist harmoniously. The uniqueness of the books approach lies in rethinking the link between messianic and utopian texts, as well as the alliances forged between progressive religious, socioeconomic, political, and ecological ideas.

Download or read book A New Andalucia and a Way to the Orient written by Paul E. Hoffman and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2004-11-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul E. Hoffman's groundbreaking book focuses on a neglected area of colonial history -- southeastern North America during the sixteenth-century. Hoffman describes expeditions to the region, efforts at colonization, and rivalries between the French, Spanish, and English. He reveals the ways in which the explorers' expectations -- fueled by legends -- crumbled in the face of difficulties encountered along the southeastern coast. The first book to link the earliest voyages with the explorations of the sixteenth century and the settlement of later colonies, Hoffman's work is an important reassessment of southern colonial history.
Download or read book Magnolia Square written by Pamela J. Lantz and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2022-09-08 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After accepting an invitation to rescue children in Brazil, Lila, and her Israeli friends set out on an adventure of a lifetime. A mission compound far from the wealthy tourist district had been established by the Crow family. This would be Team Operation Set Captives Free headquarters for the duration of their stay. Aptly named Magnolia Square for the abundance of Magnolia trees that lined the property, where impoverished children are loved, taught, and fed during the school week. On Sunday the church’s mission bell rings, calling everyone to gather for worship. It’s a humble work, important and lifesaving. The Crow family had been given permission to repurpose several city lots in the Warehouse district that neighbored the city dump. Homeless children, many with disabilities, were in want of medical attention, clean water, proper nutrition, and an education. Overwhelming needs for sure, but as of late, change seemed to be in the air. The Holy Spirit was on the move, He had called and they had answered. In short order, Team OSCF and the Crow family realized they were not the only ones that had been requested to attend His party. An afternoon visiting the inhabitants of the city dump brings the team in contact with a peculiar young man. Father Jude, a thirty-something Anglican Priest from England who had made Brazil his home and the residents of the landfill his people. Jude’s Council members had told him to expect help to come from the Holy City and that when it arrived, Dunamis Belem would ignite. It was time. The Holy Spirit was wooing and brooding, breathing fresh wind into souls and spirits and explosively empowering His church.
