Book excerpt: Ed Moses is one of the great Modern American Artists whose career as an abstract expressionist painter spans from the 1950s to the present. His works are found in prominent museums throughout the world. In 2010, at the age of 83, Ed suffered from an illness that he thought would end his ability to paint, and therefore end his desire to continue living. After medical treatment it became apparent that he would recover from his illness. During the following of his recovery, Ed had conversations with his physician about his life, art, friendships and his personal demons. The conversations were recorded, and then organized into this book. The words are essentially unedited. The title "Ed Moses: Conversations from the Cave" is a reference to one of Ed's favorite books: "The Mind in the Cave" by David Williams. In it, the author tries to understand the markings found in caves existing over 17,000 years ago. He depicts a place of fear and mystery where man's thoughts about life, death, and spirituality endeavor to reach beyond the phenomenal world. This book is not meant to be a review of Ed Moses' art, but to give insight into the artist and his art through his thoughts on his life, relationships, and his work. Included is an essay by Frances Colpitt entitled, Ed Moses: An Irrepressible Artist's Life. Professor Colpitt writes about Ed Moses from the prospective of a professor of art history. Together, the writings give a unique insight into the life of Ed Moses. People who are interested in art, art history, or those individuals who just like hear good stories will enjoy these "conversations from the cave".

Book Empire Colony Genocide

    Book Details:
  • Author : A. Dirk Moses
  • Publisher : Berghahn Books
  • Release : 2008-06-01
  • ISBN : 1782382143
  • Pages : 502 pages

Download or read book Empire Colony Genocide written by A. Dirk Moses and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1944, Raphael Lemkin coined the term “genocide” to describe a foreign occupation that destroyed or permanently crippled a subject population. In this tradition, Empire, Colony, Genocide embeds genocide in the epochal geopolitical transformations of the past 500 years: the European colonization of the globe, the rise and fall of the continental land empires, violent decolonization, and the formation of nation states. It thereby challenges the customary focus on twentieth-century mass crimes and shows that genocide and “ethnic cleansing” have been intrinsic to imperial expansion. The complexity of the colonial encounter is reflected in the contrast between the insurgent identities and genocidal strategies that subaltern peoples sometimes developed to expel the occupiers, and those local elites and creole groups that the occupiers sought to co-opt. Presenting case studies on the Americas, Australia, Africa, Asia, the Ottoman Empire, Imperial Russia, and the Nazi “Third Reich,” leading authorities examine the colonial dimension of the genocide concept as well as the imperial systems and discourses that enabled conquest. Empire, Colony, Genocide is a world history of genocide that highlights what Lemkin called “the role of the human group and its tribulations.”

Book Moses and Monotheism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sigmund Freud
  • Publisher : Leonardo Paolo Lovari
  • Release : 2016-11-24
  • ISBN : 8898301790
  • Pages : 319 pages

Download or read book Moses and Monotheism written by Sigmund Freud and published by Leonardo Paolo Lovari. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book consists of three essays and is an extension of Freud’s work on psychoanalytic theory as a means of generating hypotheses about historical events. Freud hypothesizes that Moses was not Hebrew, but actually born into Ancient Egyptian nobility and was probably a follower of Akhenaten, an ancient Egyptian monotheist. Freud contradicts the biblical story of Moses with his own retelling of events, claiming that Moses only led his close followers into freedom during an unstable period in Egyptian history after Akhenaten (ca. 1350 BCE) and that they subsequently killed Moses in rebellion and later combined with another monotheistic tribe in Midian based on a volcanic God, Jahweh. Freud explains that years after the murder of Moses, the rebels regretted their action, thus forming the concept of the Messiah as a hope for the return of Moses as the Saviour of the Israelites. Freud said that the guilt from the murder of Moses is inherited through the generations; this guilt then drives the Jews to religion to make them feel better.
