Book Upper Bear Creek Watershed Analysis

Download or read book Upper Bear Creek Watershed Analysis written by United States. Bureau of Land Management. Medford District and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Watershed analysis is the primary tool for generating information to implement ecosystem management as directed in the Northwest Forest Plan and the Medford District Resource Management Plan. The Upper Bear Creek Watershed Analysis describes conditions and interrelationships of ecosystem components for the Upper Bear Creek Watershed Analysis Area. The analysis focuses on issues and key questions that are most relevant to the management questions, human values, and resource conditions within the analysis area. Management objectives and recommendations for Bureau of Land Management (BLM)-administered lands are prioritized based on conclusions reached through the analysis. The watershed analysis formulates an overall landscape plan for BLM-administered lands and recognizes the inventory, monitoring, and research needs for the analysis area. The Upper Bear Creek Watershed Analysis was prepared by an interdisciplinary team of resource professionals and specialists from the BLM Ashland Resource Area and Medford District Staff. The watershed analysis team followed the six-step process outlined in the Ecosystem Analysis at the Watershed Scale, Federal Guide for Watershed Analysis, version 2.2. The six steps or sections included in the Upper Bear Creek Watershed Analysis are: 1) characterization, 2) issues and key questions, 3) current conditions, 4) reference conditions, 5) syntheses and interpretation of information, and 6) recommendations. The Upper Bear Creek Watershed Analysis addresses the entire analysis area and is based on existing information and recent data collection. Where resource information is missing, a data gap is identified. The watershed analysis process is iterative and new information will be used to supplement future versions of the analysis.

Book New Strategies for America s Watersheds

Download or read book New Strategies for America s Watersheds written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-04-28 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emergence of a toxic organism like pfisteria in tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay has focused public attention on potential hazards in our water. More importantly, it has reminded us of the importance of the entire watershed to the health of any body of water and how political boundaries complicate watershed management. New Strategies for America's Watersheds provides a timely and comprehensive look at the rise of "watershed thinking" among scientists and policymakers and recommends ways to steer the nation toward improved watershed management. The volume defines important terms, identifies fundamental issues, and explores reasons why now is the time to bring watersheds to the forefront of ecosystem management. In a discussion of scale and scope, the committee examines how to expand the watershed from a topographic unit to a framework for integrating natural, social, and economic perspectives as they share the same geographic space. The volume discusses: Regional variations in climate, topography, demographics, institutions, land use, culture, and law. Roles and interaction of federal, state, and local agencies. Availability or lack of pertinent data. Options for financing. The committee identifies critical points in watershed planning to ensure appropriate stakeholder involvement and integration of science, policy, and environmental ethics.

Book Multi scale Analysis of Common pool Resources for Ecosystem Conservation in the Orinoco River Watershed

Download or read book Multi scale Analysis of Common pool Resources for Ecosystem Conservation in the Orinoco River Watershed written by Luisa Galindo and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive management strategies are mechanisms that help governments to overcome problems derived from the sudden change of ecosystems processes and dynamics and to maintain the provision of ecosystem services to the population. These strategies rely on multi-scale networks of governing institutions that work together for the protection of the environment and cooperate for the solution of pressing issues. Sometimes, however, two issues imperil the persistence of local institutions within these networks, (1) their rights to govern their territory and to self-organize are not recognized, and (2) the nested and polycentric systems that operate through the multi-scale network are weak or inexistent. This research studies the case of the Orinoco River Watershed to answer the questions about what are the causes and characteristics that impede the progress towards an ideal multi-scale and polycentric system in developing countries. Three scales are studied: watershed, in the interface between regional and local scales, and local scales. Findings from the analysis of the ecosystem services' spatial distribution at the watershed scale show that the Andean region is essential for the protection of strategic ecosystems throughout the watershed. Between regional and local scales, the results indicate major disparities between actors about the importance of protecting certain natural resources, also, it was also found that groups of local actors disagree about the main economic factors that drive the socio-ecological dynamics. Through the analysis of Indigenous peoples' Life Plans, at a local scale, it was possible to identify the factors that undermine Indigenous peoples' social resilience. Loss of traditional knowledge is one of the most important aspects, followed by low coverage of basic services. The best-rated indicator was the internal organization, which helps them to maintain their traditions and cohesion among the members within their Indigenous reserve. Even though there is no single solution for addressing the issues derived from a lack of articulation and limited recognition of local institutions, the final chapter summarizes these key findings, to elaborate over what type of strategies could contribute to the improvement of multi-scale and polycentric governance of common-pool resources.
