Download or read book Economics Politics and Social Change in the Benue Basin C 1300 1700 written by Robert A. Sargent and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing many years of field work, oral history data collection, and the consolidation and amalgamation of the works of many different researchers, this study illuminates the varied and diverse connections between social and political groupings in the Middle Belt region of Nigeria, the Benue Basin. It reveals a fascinating, sophisticated and highly productive set of regional relationships. The broad regional overview has been provided by focusing on three representative political formations centred at Benin, Idah and Kwararafa. The analysis examines the forces and factors that influence economic activity, political decision-making and social transformations across a multicultural and multinational region stretching from the Atlantic coast to the fringes of the Sahara.

Book The Slave Trade and Culture in the Bight of Biafra

Download or read book The Slave Trade and Culture in the Bight of Biafra written by G. Ugo Nwokeji and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Slave Trade and Culture in the Bight of Biafra dissects and explains the structure, dramatic expansion, and manifold effects of the slave trade in the Bight of Biafra. By showing that the rise of the Aro merchant group was the key factor in trade expansion, G. Ugo Nwokeji reinterprets why and how such large-scale commerce developed in the absence of large-scale centralized states. The result is the first study to link the structure and trajectory of the slave trade in a major exporting region to the expansion of a specific African merchant group - among other fresh insights into Atlantic Africa's involvement in the trade - and the most comprehensive treatment of Atlantic slave trade in the Bight of Biafra. The fundamental role of culture in the organization of trade is highlighted, transcending the usual economic explanations in a way that complicates traditional generalizations about work, domestic slavery, and gender in pre-colonial Africa.

Download or read book Lela in Bali written by Richard Fardon and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lela in Bali tells the story of an annual festival of eighteenth-century kingdoms in Northern Cameroon that was swept up in the migrations of marauding slave-raiders during the nineteenth century and carried south towards the coast. Lela was transformed first into a mounted durbar, like those of the Muslim states, before evolving in tandem with the German colonial project into a festival of arms. Reinterpreted by missionaries and post-colonial Cameroonians, Lela has become one of the most important of Cameroonian festivals and a crucial marker of identity within the state, Richard Fardon's reconstruction of two hundred years of history is an essential contribution not only to Cameroonian studies but also to the broader understanding of the evolution of African cultures."--BOOK JACKET.

Book When Men and Women Mattered

Download or read book When Men and Women Mattered written by Onaiwu W. Ogbomo and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1997 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon narrative tradition, reenactment ceremonies, legends of gods and goddesses, and the fusion of numerous genealogies, this book examines gender relations among the Owan people of southern Nigeria between c.1320 and the beginning of the twentieth century. The author challenges the orthodox view that patriarchy has been the norm in all societies, adding to our understanding of the origins of patriarchy and placing its development in an historical perspective. He also suggests a new definition of matriarchy, not simply as rule by women, but also as a phase in the history of societies in which gender equality existed. The book argues that the Owan people once had a social order very close to matriarchy. Despite a large influx from neighbouring peoples with a strong patriarchal tradition, Owan women retained their high social status and power because of their virtual control of the cotton trade, but after the demand for cotton decreased sharply after 1700, their social position declined rapidly until the beginning of the twentieth century, when it was altered legally by the establishment of British rule.ONAIWU W.
